How I Rescued a RARE Bell System Telephone Van

Hagerty article: www.hagerty.com/media/buying-and-selling/auctions/a-bell-service-van-called-to-be-rescued-did-you-answer/
When was the last time you saw one of these? They used to be everywhere, but now they're nowhere. Over the past 50 years, Bell System vans have nearly gone extinct. Here's the story of how I found and resurrected one of the last ones in the world, a 1974 Ford Econoline E-200 Display Van originally used by Pacific Northwest Bell.

    My father worked for Pacific Telephone having retired in 1985, 2 years after the breakup. He had the distinction of driving the last Pacific Telephone van in original colors. Ahoy! Thanks for showing us the van through your wonderfully produced video. Brings back memories. I vaguely recall Northwestern Bell vans in this color scheme in Minneapolis when I was still small. We also had a yellow Trimline dial telephone, identical to the one you used in your intro, hanging on our kitchen wall in the 80’s. Doubly cool to see that because I believe the Trimline models with a dial were relatively rare compared to the touch tone models.

    The Pepsi Free can is a cool find. That was a very short-lived brand in the early 80s. In Back to the Future, Marty McFly asks for a Pepsi Free at the diner in 1955. It's a joke that probably doesn't land well with anyone who isn't old enough to remember that was a thing.

    Does anyone know why many of these vans had all windows on the right side and no windows on the left? Was this just for driver visibility? These phone company vans are the only vans I have seen with this type window layout.

    • @ShervinsGarage
      @ShervinsGarage 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a very good question. I haven't looked into it (no pun intended), but I'm assuming that driver visibility played a factor. Ford's version of this layout was called the Display Van, and I know that it served a functional purpose as well as an aesthetic one. The driver's side was able to advertise the company name on the exterior and house shelving and equipment on the interior, while the passenger side was able to provide visibility from both the interior (eliminating blind spots) and from the exterior. The latter point (being able to see what was inside the van from the outside) raises some questions since it gave potential thieves visibility too. But maybe the benefits outweighed the disadvantages.
