Chasing Amtrak's "Heritage" P42 #156 on train #6, the California Zephyr
มุมมอง 2K13 ปีที่แล้ว
On Tuesday May 10 the Amtrak California Zephyr #5 went west with #156, the Phase 1 painted P42 GE Genesis locomotive. My buddy on youtube, user NarodnieMstiteli, caught the westbound run at Verdi, NV. Luckily the next day the same trainset came back over the Sierra Nevada and Donner pass as the #6 California Zephyr. I first caught it in Verdi, on Quilici Ranch Road. I thought I was done but I c...
Reno to Truckee Aboard the Amtrak California Zephyr on the Union Pacific Railroad
มุมมอง 4.3K14 ปีที่แล้ว
A ride on the Amtrak California Zephyr in California on the Union Pacific Railroad transcontinental railroad. This video covers leaving Reno to Truckee including the Truckee River Canyon. You'll notice a couple things that are different. The Reno Trench now is covered with a "cap" in the area of the El Dorado parking garage. Also, sadly, Fitzgerald's Casino/Hotel has been closed for a couple ye...
Fun Train Ride over Donner Pass behind Amtrak 116 on the Plaza Santa Fe
มุมมอง 52K14 ปีที่แล้ว
Here's a video I am about two years behind in editing and uploading. On March 14, 2008, I was allowed to ride the Fun Train to catch video. I already uploaded other videos from these rides on this channel including Grandma Rap and the Funatics, the on-board band. In this video I spent most of the time hanging out the vestibule of the Plaza Santa Fe as we went over Donner Pass in a snowstorm. En...

A ride on the Amtrak California Zephyr in California on the Union Pacific Railroad transcontinental railroad. I start out shooting out the window of my sleeper car and then go downstairs to shoot out the vestibule door. From the 2006-2007 "Get Trackside" by Train Arts DVD series, these are standard def videos I shot in Northern California, Nevada and Utah. These videos are from when I used an o...

From the 2006-2007 "Get Trackside" by Train Arts DVD series, these are standard def videos I shot in Northern California, Nevada and Utah. These videos are from when I used an older titling style and didn't have a hi-def camera. While my newer videos feature a lot of editing, these videos give the real trackside experience, showing full length trains. Enjoy the series! AMTRAK CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR ...
Hot August Nights Tour -- Virginia City Private Coach on Amtrak California Zephyr
มุมมอง 2.2K14 ปีที่แล้ว
This video, shot on Sunday, August 8, 2010, shows the Amtrak #5 westbound California Zephyr passing Quilici Ranch Road in Verdi, Nevada. On the back of the Amtrak California Zephyr is the privately owned Virginia City coach, with people waving from the rear platform. This was the return trip for the Virginia City on its Hot August Nights charter. This coach is associated with Virginia and Truck...
Union Pacific on the Reno Local Shortline -- music-free version
มุมมอง 4.9K14 ปีที่แล้ว
On January 10, 2008, Union Pacific Railroad runs the Reno local runs against a snowy background. We start near the Reno Trench, then follow it past UNR to Parr Blvd, Panther Road and Golden Valley. In two places we see Union Pacific locomotives switching propane tank cars. You'll see the train pass through grade crossings near University of Nevada Reno and farther up the line. A lot of people h...
Short: Semi-truck w/crane on Union Pacific mainline in Reno
มุมมอง 2.8K16 ปีที่แล้ว
On September 9, 2008 I just picked up my car at the shop in downtown Reno, NV. As I drove west on 4th street I saw something I'd never seen on rails before, a semi-truck with a crane pulling three hopper cars. I had my camera but not my tripod, sorry for shaky video at times. This equipment may relate to the rerouting on Sep 9 of Amtrak and UP trains from Winnemucca, Nevada to Roseville, Califo...
V&T Reconstruction Roadbed Tunnel 2 to Scales
มุมมอง 1.9K16 ปีที่แล้ว
This video was shot from the passenger seat of my friends SUV. It shows a ride on the Virginia and Truckee Reconstruction Project roadbed in American Flat near Virginia City. We start heading downhill, then back uphill from near Tunnel 2 to Scales, where the upper "end of track" is. Don't blame me, it's not the greatest video, and there wasn't any worthwhile sound, so I dubbed over the music. I...
Union Pacific Passenger Special Night Shots, June 2008
มุมมอง 70716 ปีที่แล้ว
This UP shipper's business special ran up the California Coast and then over Donner pass on June 9-10, 2008. I wish I could say I followed the train the whole way. Instead I only got a couple night shots, one in Truckee, CA and one in Reno, Nevada. Enjoy what little there is!

Nice to see a "patched " Southern Pacific unit at 13:30 👍
It’s for sale now. $885,000. Way above my pay grade.
Riding in the car over the California Zephyr route to Emeryville would be terrific
I need a rail channel that dedicated a video for many many of these private rail cars. It would be amazing to see them and hear their history. And you can do some that don't exist but still have pictures/photos/drawings/blueprints.
The Reno trench is exactly like the Boston Southwest Corridor
Hauskaa näyttää olen, valitettavasti en ole tässä mukana vaikka linkkini johtaa tähän 😁
Lucius Beebe, the original steam punk.
Oh yes i have rode amtrak from slc ut threw reno to truckee i love riding amtrak indeed
Connie is a lovely, brave and beautiful friend and a great cook. If you like the old railroad, you'll love her book, "Trains in My Heart." A true girl of the golden west.
Legends are a disaster!
That way of traveling sounds cool as hell.
Thanks a bunch for just abruptly cutting the film off in mid sentence!
WHAT A HISTORY TO SAY THE LEAST GOD BLESS THESE SOULS
The interior dome shot near the beginning is NOT the Plaza Santa Fe but a Budd built full dome that was also on the train. The Pullman built Pleasure Domes looked much different inside the dome and outside as well. Nice video though, thanks for posting.
It is so sad that not all the train called are not the same some of them are big some of them are not the same some of them are not the match that's kind of too bad but however if anyone want to feel the same card of money and that is so expensive
Thank you for focusing on the beauty outside the train and not the idiots inside it. Nice to know that there are other train travel enthusiasts out there who don't waste their entire trip playing with a fucking iPhone or Facebook. Excellent video. Downloaded it so I can re-watch it every night.
Funny how if you live in a mobile home about the same size as this train, then you are looked upon as trailer trash, but if you stay on board this private rail car, you look upon it as high class and upscale. Go figure, LOL.
Yay D-1's old horn, I think it sounds great :( stupid complainers
Awesome Amtrak video, I have a N Scale kato model of #156 & the Superliners
Love your video, it would be a perfect commercial for Amtrak
Say what you want about General Electric, but the sound of those p42s chugging up the pass is pretty amazing.
Love it
Nice video. Well shot and well edited. Good work. Enjoyed watching the WHOLE video. Didn't have to ff once! Thumbs up.
Amtrak 184 before the heritage makeover.
I call I the snobb can I wonder what it cost to ride It if you have as???
AWESOME
Once we went inside the car to hear the guy give his presentation I had to stop watching the video was just that bad. It was like listening to Godzilla scratch his nails against a really huge blackboard. If you're professional about any business hire a professional to shoot your video/take your photos. Having a friend or family member shoot your business video is like inviting a bunch of people over who you hope will lend you venture capital and having your mom cater the affair.
I think the video is very interesting and informational, and I enjoy the atmosphere of the people who made comments, they are very average every day people who would be a pleasure to spend time on the tracks and train, you seen hard to please
Does the California Zephyr go threw here
No. The Zephyr runs from Chicago to Oakland thru Denver, further to the south.
Jeremy Williams Yes, the CZ passes over this route.
Dan Fitzgerald You're right Dan. I was wrong. My apologies.
Eagle One The original CZ ran from Chicago to Oakland, and operated from Salt Lake City to Sacramento on the former Western Pacific along the Feather River. The modern CZ still traverses much of the original route, however, Amtrak uses the old Southern Pacific route from Salt Lake City to Sacramento, which now takes the train over Donner Pass. One of the Pre-Amtrak trains that crossed Donner Pass was the Southern Pacific City of San Francisco.
Dan Fitzgerald Clarification: The modern CZ operates over much of the original route, the exception being the Salt Lake to Sacramento portion.
pretty yes( as a passenger) .If you were driving in a semi truck with chains on you would think otherwise. I driven over it in the winter hundred of times in 20+ years of driving long haul from Midwest to Cal. not fun I a semi truck
I'll soon be 70 and been out here running the hiways and byways and interstates since I was 20. I run a reefer from the east to west coast and produce back. Got a "large car 379" with all the bells and wheels. O/O. Been over Donner my share of times. With a grossed out truck even with a 3 stage jake and riding the lower gears, especially in winter , it's dangerous. Usually stop at the Alamo or Sierra Sid's and get some chow and rest. Too many young drivers, not used to Donner get in some serious trouble. I live in NC and plan on taking the ride by rail one day and see some really beautiful scenery. Trucking without the troubles associated with it would be no fun. Always look forward to crossing the CA scales west of Truckee. CA DOT sucks !!!
I drove a truck for almost 20 years and went up an over a few passes myself. I was passed more than once by guys with smoking brakes. I pulled smooth bore tankers, both chemical and food grade. Never had a problem with Cali scales. Colorado on the other hand seemed to enjoy hassling me. There are parts I miss, but for the most part I'm glad I hung it up. To many guys who don't care about their professionalism now. Automatic trucks, GPS, electronic logs telling you when to shut down and when to drive, back up sensors, cameras looking both out an inside the truck...not many truck driving skills left to being a truck driver anymore. Hope you got to take your train trip. I just bought my ticket for a trip on the California Zephyr.
I am currently reading Lucius Beebe's "The provocative pen of Lucius Beebe" so this is very fascinating.
at 2:50 that is Norlan Utah which is 10 miles north of Helper here comes Utah Rail they are taking a runthrough coal train to Wildcat Mine on the Huntington Branch power on point are 4 MPI MK50-3s build by Motive Power Industries in Boise. Utah Rail is the only railroad in the states who uses the engines. 3:45 here comes Zephyr Amtrak train #6 he will make a stop in Helper and then head to Denver. at 10:00 BNSF has trackage rights on the Rio Grande because of the SP Merger and all trains going to Oakland are switched onto the Rio Grande and the Western Pacific. BNSF also picks up through freights interchanged at Denver,Grand Junction,Helper, and Roper Yard in Salt Lake as part of the trackage rights agreement.
ah Helper Junction Utah my favorite town. see the SD 40s at the start Helper gets its name from these engines their job push UP, Utah Rail, and BNSF freights up and over Soldier Summit to Provo then the train heads to Roper Yard in Salt Lake to head on the Western Pacific to Elko or heads to the end of the line in North Ogden where the Union Pacific Transcontinental Railroad heads east to Council Bluff and the OSL heads north to Pocatello Yard and the connection with the Utah Northern. Helper is the heart of the Rio Grande since I was 3 I have been fallowing this railroad until UP brought them into the family. also take a look at the power that tells the whole story of Rio Grande. in 1988 Southern Pacific was bankrupt and she was looking for a mate (merger partner) it has been a century since the ICC forced her to divorce (split and liquidate) Union Pacific in 191. The first one to come was Burlington Northern Santa Fe they wanted SP to join them the ICC said NO! and SP was forced to paint over all of its SP&BNSF engines and they went back to SP Black and Red. Then the unthinkable happened Rio Grande want bankrupt. SP bailed Rio Grande out and adopted her although Rio Grande owned the railroad it was SP who was the owner of the stock. in 1994 the ICC was replaced by the Surface Transportation Board who answers to The American Association of Railroads which is a branch of FRA which is a unit of the US Department of Transportation. in 1990 the Stagger Act was signed UP brought his children into the fold Western Pacific and MOPAC. as for BNSF the STB approved the merger and they became BNSF Railway and then Southern Pacific went bankrupt again there was only one thing to fix this Southern Pacific had to pay her debts and merge with UP. and thats what happened on September 11th,1996 SP and UP met at Union Station in North Ogden before a federal judge and signed the certificate SP and UP were back together and that is the story of how Rio Grande joined the UP family.
I've actually never been on a train before... A real one anyway.
Great video!!! Watching your video, I don't have to wonder what I'm looking at. Again, great job.
The train would look more beautiful with a UP EMD SD70m on the point.
How much it's coast to ride the Snow train?
Hey Reno Railfan have you rode Amtrak before?
I had wanted to see more of the interior of the coach, e.g., the bedrooms, showers, dining room, etc. Of course, with such close quarters, my dream bathroom would certainly have to include a bidet so I wouldn't have to shower after sitting on the throne and doing my thing while going across the country. At a private car convention in Portland some years ago I did get to see the exterior of the Virginia City there at Portland's historic Union Station. It was said that while not in use, the City was docked at Redwood City. One more thing. Growing up in Santa Barbara, I remember private coaches being parked on a siding near that historic tree at Union Station there. Mrs. Marjorie Merriweather Post and the "gang."
Jay Young ironic, I’m sitting in an Amtrak train at Portland Oregon Union Station as I read this.
Nice video!
I know this girl! Shes really nice connie thanks for the house
Very Nice Video......
Ji
how often do they run on that line? I was just there and while I was waiting at the Amtrak Station I heard the local heading back to Sparks.
This is great! A railroad video without concert
Vid ( 10 ) Narration ( 10 ) Totally Enjoyable
Enjoyed watching the video, if a bit disjointed. Seeing that drift in front of abandoned Tunnel 40 was interesting. The bridge where the CAT got wedged was Lower Cascades. That was a nice view you provided looking toward the open area to the north. A pleasant view : >) ! Tnx
I sure wish you could have gotten some footage from when the train went through the snow sheds above Donner Lake before it was rerouted.
I ended up buying the addons for train simulator and it is amazing. You can run between Provo and Helper on the Soldier Summit route, then Provo to Grand Junction on the Green River sub route, followed by Grand Junction to Glenwood Springs on the Glenwood route, and then finally Glenwood Springs to Denver on the Moffat route. Basically you can run the California Zephyr round trip between Provo and Denver over 4 different routes on train simulator.
CSX in Utah? How in the world do you get CSX in Utah? It must have been run-through power for BNSF and Union Pacific, plus possibly CSX has a trackage-rights agreement with UP for manifest and some coal trains.
The add-on for Train Simulator also involves Utah Railway's line to the Wildcat coal loadout and beyond, plus the extension of the former Rio Grande's mainline, now Union Pacific, to Mounds and the Sunnyside branch, then UP's ex-Rio Grande Pleasant Valley branch to the Skyline coal loadout, and finally UP's own line to the IPPX terminal on the south side of Provo. The line next extends about 2.5 miles west of Provo, making it just over 100 miles in length, then add on 14 miles at Sunnyside.
