The original Model 717 was the C-135 airframe which resulted in the 700-plus production run for the KC-135 Stratotanker.

First aircraft I ever rode that had lower level pressurization and modern AC. It felt like a wildly modern aircraft despite its history the first time I rode one with Hawaiian.

Boeing killed the 717 when they decided not to make the 717-300. The 717-300 had heavy interest from Delta, Lufthansa, SAS, JAL, Northwest, Air Tran as well as China Southern and Air Canada. Harry Stonecipher's Hubris Killed the 717, just like the 757.

The 717 is a much better sircraft than the Airhus 319/320. Quiter, smoother and EXTREMELY reliable on short haul routes. Someone should pick them up and keep them in service. Why would you discard an aircraft who's reliability is unmatched? The problem is, Boeing just wanted no remants of the merger with McDonnel- Douglas, when MD's product was clearly Superiior! The fact that has continued run, mostly with Delta, speaks volumes!

The delivery is a bit sloppy but overall good video; I would have added a bit more context by starting out with saying that the 717 has its roots in a 1983 McDonnel Douglas design study called DC-9-90, which was intended to meet the requirements of the newly deregulated US airline industry, and fill the gap in the MD-80 product line previously occupied by the DC-9-30, however, the economic recession of the early 80s prompted McDonnell Douglas to postpone development of an optimized 100-seater and instead shorten the MD-81 to create the MD-87, which retained the larger wing of the Super 80 series. Then I'd continue; Due to poor sales of the MD-87, McDonnell Douglas revealed that it was once again studying a specialized 100-seat version of the MD-80 in 1991, this design study was called the MD-87-105 and is what would ultimately become the MD-95. The MD-95 was based on, and was almost identical to, the DC-9-30 airframe, albeit with new BMW/Rolls-Royce BR715 engines and a glass cockpit. The MD-95 would be rebranded "Boeing 717" after the 1997 Boeing/McDonnell Douglas merger. I'd wrap the video up by saying that the 717 suffered from the same problem that is beginning to plague the 737 series, in that it was by and large a dated airframe with new engines and displays, and no real changes to the core systems of this 1960s era airframe. It faced stiff competition from the then-new 737NG series and A320 family in addition to relatively low demand for the niche 100-seat category. You will observe that the 717's direct competition, the 737-600 and A318 were also commercial flops and did not sell well, illustrating a lack of demand for airplanes in that size category. In the end, the 717, much like the MD-87 upon which it was attempting to improve, only really sold well to existing DC-9/MD-80 operators.

I said most of the things after the "Then I'd continue;". However, the first part is good advice, I will try to do more research about the early stages of aircraft development next time. Thanks for the constructive criticism.

You would definitely need larger airplanes flying into Kai Tak to reduce the number of aircraft movements to keep up with the high passenger traffic. It’s not the size of the aircraft but the numbers. It’d be really congested now. They could stretch the runway farther out and leave a means of bypassing the runway from the northwest to get to the takeoff runway where you put it. Landing would remain on 13L given the terrain/obstacles, landing 31s could be either way.
