The holes at the back doesn't matter, it won't affect the figures function. I think it was just a design to show the front and back of the piece.

I can't connect the head with the joint
Try use small tweezers fit the joint inside the head, then push down using the back end of the tweezers. It should fit in nicely unless your figure isn't well made, like mine.
