We react to LGBTQ+ media from every country and every decade, complete with nuanced discussion of queer representation and issues.
House of Boys – reacting to the queer coming-of-age drama from 2009
Conrad and Joe take a look at the 2009 Luxembourgian-German queer coming-of-age film directed and written by Jean-Claude Schlim, starring Layke Anderson, Benn Northover and Udo Kier (as a drag queen!). Content warning: this one is set in the 80s and includes depictions of the AIDS epidemic.

You Are Not Alone - we react to a 1978 Danish queer coming of age film
มุมมอง 1.5K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
For our first ever episode, Joe and Conrad check out one of the earliest examples of a queer coming of age tale they could find: You Are Not Alone (Du er ikke alene), from 1978 and Denmark. Written by Lasse Nielsen and Bent Petersen, and directed by Ernst Johansen and Lasse Nielsen, the film stars Anders Agensø and Peter Bjerg in a tale with surprisingly young protagonists - which often makes f...
Way too chatty.
The protease inhibitors came out in 1996
I have to agree with Reb - You guys are missing so much dialogue by talking over the film rather than pausing. Other than that, good reaction. Thanks guys
When will the new episode drop? I love this podcast
Ya'll missed so much of the movie with your discussions. Please pause more if you are going to talk so much.
Great channel! I'd like to put a film on your radar. Penda's Fen from 1974. Directed by Alan Clarke. A British queer teen wrestles with his religious faith and goes on a surreal vision quest. It has a different vibe than the standard coming-of-age drama.
I like how bratty and angry Sebastian is in the first act. Queer rage is in short supply in these coming-of-age films. But all the conflict fizzles after he comes out.
I love the concept of this channel reacting and reinspecting older queer movies. I just finished watching your reaction to Beautiful Thing. I love that movie. Flaws and all. I think the fact that Beautiful Thing ended in a relatively happy tone is ground breaking for that era. The ending was bittersweet but hopeful which, in my opinion, is - shall I say - a beautiful thing. Do Shelter (2007) or Pride (2014) next please.
I still love this movie for some reason, I guess it’s the nostalgia, but for some reason I’m more forgiving for these early gay movies as they usually had a low budget but u can see they come from a good place in a time there was not a lot of representation 🌈🌈
The Way He Looks is a Portuguese film about a blind boy that I always felt had a few dashes of Heartstopper about it, is quite a sweet film to add to your list and not enough people know about it. Holding the Man might be a good one to react too, as it is based on an autobiography. Closet Monster is also a little bit quirky compared to other gay films. Mathias and Maxime (French Canadian) and Punch (from New Zealand) are also on my good list :) There is Mascarpone from Italy, which has a sequel coming soon. Oh and Firebird! As well as the usual suspects like Pride.
I really enjoyed this when I watched it for the first time about two years ago, I think I was surprised by how much I did because I was kind of expecting it to be a misery fest like a lot of Brit films that aren't mainstream. And because my Mum always watched Eastenders, it was weird seeing Linda Henry and a very young Tameka before they were on it together!
I loved this movie, haven't seen it for years. One of my favourite gay coming-of-age movies of all time 😎
I don’t know if you take requests, but I’d love to see your reaction to StraightJacket from 2004.
The song btw is ‘Libertine’ by Mylene Farmer, she’s a huge gay icon in France known for her amazing stage shows and very artistic musicvideos
Love ur collaboration….I listen to your other podcasts, and I’m so happy that u guys have started this one
Yay! Thank you! We love that you're following us on this new venture!
Thank you for a wonderful conversation❤️ You guys gotta check out "Life and Death" from the same directors, (Svend) Wam & (Petter) Vennerød. This norwegian movie premiered in 1980, and depicts both polyamory and bisexual relationships🙌
Definitely one for our list - thanks!
Thank you for the thoughtful discussion of the film! I think it is very much a product of its time, but still beautiful to watch today, because the interactions between the boys feel so natural and positive that you can easily get lost in it, even if the ending feels kind of unreal. Then again, creating a social utopia very much fits into the timeframe back then. It definitely has a very liberating mood and comes without the heaviness of today's culture. I think its relaxed approach to showing the human body and s*x*ality is even more progressive when viewed today. I also appreciate that you talked about the political aspects of the film which are sometimes overlooked but were also part of the youth movement at the time, like voting rights for young people and ideas about collective action and anti-authoritarianism.
There was a movie called Threesome that came out a few years after this, come on!
So with the time difference between your locations, when are you two recording this?!
Friday afternoons in Canada and evenings in the UK - it's become a tradition!
I was hoping you would be covering this film soon! While I realise now it is not a perfect film, it was an important one for me in my own path to self discovery . . . Looking forward to the discussion!!
Ditto... It's one of the movies (like Edge of 17 ) that I think of, when I think of movies that I identified with.
Great video guys! You had me laughing the whole time! Especially when Mom went out the window in heels! That bathtub scene...geez....just make a move! Looking forward to the next "Queer-entary"🤪
Thanks so much! We're glad you're on board, Chazilla!
The comedy commentary really helped make this movie more fun. You guys are a hoot to listen to. Keep it coming! My apologies, I just got to Joe's use of the word "Queer-entary" and I don't mean to impede on his intellectual property😜
Hey guys . . . I am really excited about this project and look forward to future episodes! While I am used to seeing Joe on You Tube due to Horror Queers, it is nice to finally see Conrad as I have also been a Movie Oubliette listener for a while as well. Keep up the excellent work!!
My favorite horror podcasters collaborating on Queer cinema 🎉🎉🎉
Oh I did not expect to "watch" the movie with you guys and that was fantastic! I can't wait to see where you guys take this! This was a fantastic film (what I saw of it here) and the conversation was good. I can't wait to hear you guys riff on this topic!
Thanks! We get better at it with each episode, I promise! 😂
