Theatre should be inspiring, but it should be for everybody. Shakespeare should be for everybody. It’s a shame this production ruined Shakespeare for you, because it seems as if the concept became more important than the text and the audience’s comfort. Many Shakespearean directors try incredibly hard to make the text come alive for people who don’t normally like it, because they care passionately. This just seemed like gimmickry for gimmickry’s sake, and it’s sadly killed a potential customer.

It means they had a great opening weekend. They sold out. Its always annoying when your stock runs out, but better than having a slow day. Thry just didnt expect the turn out they got it seems. Given its their first few weeks, and forst bank hol, its understandable they underestimated the demand. Ive ownee a few pubs sold my final one coming on teo years now. Only a brave person would bother opening a pub in this day. I wish him well, but will be amazed if its still open in 2 years time.

Yeah...there may have been a world where Jamie Lloyd could have applied his aesthetic and directing style onto Shakespeare and it could have worked out, but this was a step (or 5) too far. He has a thing about cameras and using film in the theatre, but like you said, you're coming to see theatre, not a movie. The thing about Shakespeare is that you could just read it, but to really understand it, you need to see it up on its feet. With this it seems like Jamie Lloyd was more interested in stripping things away, which made it really no different than just reading it in a classroom. And the cameras...dear lord, there was no need for them, they just got in the way, throw them out!

agreed. JL should be careful going forward - not everyone will let this pass considering the hoopla around the ticket scarcity....casting Tom H didn't save this. This reminded me of something fringey you'd see in Brooklyn that worried more about the style and message they are adding rather than letting the underlying play breathe (this last bit is exactly what JL said he's trying to do in the program - it says "he's getting out of the way of the play itself".....did he do that here? did he?). This all being said, he elevated Sunset so giving him leeway. Also his style is 101% perfect for his upcoming Godot....so good on him.

So I studied Romeo and Juliet HEAVILY at university and I can tell you right now they cut out very key contextual scenes, making it difficult to understand in places for my friends who didn't know the text as well. Romeo and Juliet is designed to be a comedic tragedy, but that's due to the lighter fluffy elements, which can be aided by the scenery. However, it did not working in this context because they stripped all the light and fluffiness from it with the lighting and set design. Romeo and Juliet is FULL of jokes, if done properly. I think this production was very flat. I get what they were trying to do but they missed the bar massively

Going ultra-minimalist with Shakespeare (in the original prose) was a mistake. It was almost inevitable that audiences would be bored and confused, especially if the actors are also emoting minimally.
