The ANCIENT origins of Midsummer
Midsummer is an ancient festival, whose roots go deep into the foundations of Europe. From bonfires to may-poles, flower-wreaths to fern-flowers, in this video I will be exploring the ancient roots of a venerable European tradition.

The Dragon and the Indo-European
มุมมอง 5K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Today, dragons are a common element of much fiction, but their roots go deep into myth and folklore. Where did they come from? How did the legend spread? and how are the dragons of the European Native Faiths related to those of Christianity?

Edit: As of 2020, I no longer agree with all the views presented in this video. In particular, the connection between Santa and Odin which I put forward is something of a stretch, as is the part connecting Yggdrasil with the Christmas Tree. Aside from that, I believe the video is still mostly informative, so I will leave it up for the time being. Today, Christmas is celebrated by millions acros...

    Really we celebrate all the old traditions from the hanging of mistletoe to the gift giving, and decorating tree's. They just added Santa and christ birthday or Resurrection not sure which, even Easter carries on with germanic traditions with the color eggs of Eostre

    • @YorkyOne
      @YorkyOne 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hanging and kissing under mistletoe is 18th century English in origin. Little evidence that the Anglo-Saxons worshipped a goddess called Eostre. And the dating of Easter was set long before the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons began. The Christmas tree is 16th century German in origin.

    • @Civilwar.relics
      @Civilwar.relics 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@YorkyOne Anglo-Saxons were of Germanic orgins. So saying they didn't worship there Germanic Goddess, is the same as saying they weren't Germanic either, what are you some afro historian

    • @YorkyOne
      @YorkyOne 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Civilwar.relics I know who and what the Anglo-Saxons were. The point being that there is little evidence that there was an Anglo-Saxon goddess called Eostre. Just one reference from Bede that has no corroborative evidence anywhere. If you were trying to infer that the Christian Easter is actually a Pagan festival then that is historically incorrect.

    • @Civilwar.relics
      @Civilwar.relics 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@YorkyOne there is very little anything left from the Anglo-Saxons time period, especially since they converted around the year 500 or 600 that's when Christianity first hit England. And Germanic and Scandinavian tales were told by word of mouth not on paper, so again I'd disagree with you, just because a group of people's moves to a different area doesn't mean they left all there traditions behind.

    Forgot to mentioning the ”reddening” decorations of the Jul/Yule tree and decorating one’s house in red themed decorations and figures representing Yule spirits (yule goat and gnomes). Drinking mulled wine. The Mistletoe and its connection with the God Balder. Most of all I believe the celebration of Julblot is not during the midwinter which is its own celebration and the Jul is on the first full moon after midwinter.

    I found interesting the use of the goat decorations in Sweden. It reminds me the faunalia, celebration of Faunus at the beginning of December . The goat as fertility symbol

    Your edit is foolish. Whether it's 100% true or not we may not fully know, YET Your claim that Santa may have correlation with Odin, and the Tree with the Norse Tree of Life is VERY much possible indeed! You should take that ridiculous disclaimer out regardless of which Christians may be butthurt.

    I think the idea of the house spirit is making comeback in the uk in the guise of the mischievous elf on a shelf who moves about the house while children sleep and has to be searched for each morning.

    It is easy to see the link between Santa Claus and Odin when you look at Sint Nicolaas in the Netherlands. They are both in the darkest time of winter riding on a horse in the air. Judging over good and bad, making people scared,but also giving good fortune or presents.......It is again I think the Pagan tradition,being overtaken by a Christian tradition, both I love and both should be remembered in my opinion....There are way more traditions around midwinter that are Pagan...

  • @Jannette-mw7fg
    @Jannette-mw7fg 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    There for sure is a link, first the Pagan Germans where devoted to Yggdrasil the holy oak, and they wanted to honor it at Yul. Than the Christians wanted to get rid of the tree ceremony, but they failed. So they choose the Christmas tree instead, because it symbolized the holy trinity with its triangular shape. Transforming a tradition is easier than getting rid of it!

    Many people forget that in the myths, man and woman were created by Odin, Ville, and Ve from logs, which might hold kinship to both the World Tree, the Christmas Tree, and finally kinfolk. "The Family Tree" Something to reflect and think about this Yule year. ✊😏✌️

    This is too "Northern Germanic". The word "Jul"/"Yule" is likely much older than even proto-Germanic. There is a close cognate in the Iranian branch of Indo-European (pronounced "yal" or "yal da" = "Yule" / "Yule day") to describe the winter solstice that suggests the feast (and some of its tree-related traditions) go back all the way to proto Indo-European...

    I love this. Being in a VERY Christian community, they are hypocrites to everything. The biggest one is their celebration of Christmas (esp the material aspect and the Santa aspect) they allow their children to worship Saint Nic and talk w the dead in speaking to Santa. And they celebrate this very heathan holiday. Love my Germanic roots and history. Yule is in our hearts as Nords and Germanic peoples. Happy Winter Solstice y’all.
