I remember being a kid and the theater my family brought me to a lot had a cardboard construction of Walle for when the movie was popular but this was a few years after. I asked the management if I could buy it 😂 ....they said no 😢
How much ?

Wall-E
@GearsMcTinkersome yes.. but the guy with the remote 😭

...and the sculpture work begins.
We're in for a pause for a few days.
Glad the second run came out better. Are you going to apply a high gloss paint before building your additional parts?
The lid shape will get roughed up with 100grit for adhesion - I see wood glue or liquid nails with styrofoam sheets in this thing's future. The final sculpt will get a gloss finish to help the later de-molding, though, yes.
@@GearsMcTinkersome cool!
That's going to be heavy!
Its' not too bad. Under 50lbs, easy. And it worked great! ... A couple more videos are scheduled to post, then Thursday starts a pause for a week or so. :(

I have seen engineering drawings done on a paper napkin and i have drawn construction plans on scraps of wood. This is the first brown bag drawings i have seen. I'm clear on what you are planning. Go for it!
Wouldn't some binder clips have held the folds in place?
If I had any, I think so. Would have needed plastic wrap to keep them from sticking, but yes.
As i was scrolling through my feed i was looking a titles and not thumbnails. I saw your video and continued to see what others were posted. I then caught your thumbnail in the corner of my eye but my brain saw the image as bacon! At that point i had to scroll back and look properly. Thanks for the giggle. Now it is time to go cook some bacon.
I sure hope this gives you the rigidity you need for this part.
I hope this new plan works.
Try a clay mold and fiberglass shrinks at the same rate at 72 dgrs. as clay .
Lay up 2 looks cleaner so far.
was there too much hardner? Lots of heat.....
My suspicion is I went too thick too fast. The expanding foam had not truly finished expanding so when I turned the form over right side up gravity made things worse. The second casting has gone well and will be posting in a few days. Learning is all about mistakes along the way. This was a good one to make early and not later when it really matters.
Wax on... wax on. Again, wax on... wax on. Buff
Good luck
It's already looking better. these vids are a few days behind reality.
it's what to water? can't hear that word. It would be good to explain what this project is. Kind of a duuu.
Have a time code so I can check for the word spoken? This is several videos into creating a highly customized hatch for the car. Check the associated playlist. I'll have some concept art in another video yet to post.
@@GearsMcTinkersome 0:18, oh, the word is responsive, but I still don't understand what that means. sticks better, or worse or sooner? Just a sentence explaining in the beginning of each video or in the title or description will clear it all up.
@@salvor1 Responsive = puffs up better.
bummer
I felt so upset just by watching... Don't get discouraged, take it slow, do some brainstorming. If it's misshapen, could it be forced into shape when applied on the hatch? And lastly, how much would a rear hatch cost at a junkyard?
I considered a second hatch, but would need a pace to store the first. The home I am doing this work at is not mine for a long term storage option.
Oh no! If you do redo the work may I suggest plywood frames set onto the fiberglass. Big triangular type shapes with the hypotenuse down the window and the long leg parallel to the ground. The trunk section can have rectangular extensions. Racking can be stabilized with sections of plywood set in perpendicular to the triangles. Overall, this would build a grid support under the fiberglass when the whole thing is flipped over. Yes it will be very heavy.
If you would hold the can upside down as the instructions say, you would have more control over the dispensing of the product.
Hey Gears, looking great!! I love seeing you making content again, keep it up
Not the prettiest lay up job ever done but it is functional for building you parts, and that was the goal. Are you planning to have 2x4 legs to the ground to keep it stable? It may just be the way it looks on camera but the droid slot looks round. On a slope a circle hole should be more oval. Or, is the current circle just reference/ access?
Yes to ellipsoid shape. Current circle is reference to make cutting easier. As to my previous video's comment I actually meant the next video after this one. :D
@GearsMcTinkersome ok, to all.
It is amazing all the stuff that spray foam gets used for. I had used some for a project ad the can was nearly empty. The driveway still had a small puddle of rain water so I shot a small lump of this foam onto the top of the puddle. The foam expanded and stayed on top of the water the whole time. Once cured, the bottom of the foam was very flat and smooth.
Wait til you see my mistake in the next video!
@GearsMcTinkersome oh? Will watch.
If you post this to the old model man Tom page, minds will blow..... Good to see you with a model in hand
So after all the cleaning is done it is time for primer, glossy black, and All-Clad chrome. The paint should be durable enough to get you around the block! 🙂 Seriously, you are putting a lot of time and effort into this. I am sure they will look great when you are done.
It's good how you drill down into your work but you just brushed over the details. Sorry, I am sure you're tired of these unpolished puns.
You may spit those words out, but they do shine.
Nice to hear the old intro again Tom :)
If I go back, it'll be live streams only. Too much time is lost in editing.
PS. Apart from "On the bench for..." I couldn't remember if I said the channel name or how or what. lolz. As you can see, I'm still acquiring kits. ;)
@@GearsMcTinkersome lol you did great, and a model man can never stop buying kits :) Do let us know if you ever decide to do a modelman livestream that would be fun. Though I enjoy the Gears content too, so you do you man Ill enjoy it either way !
I miss your model reviews and builds. It's time for a Round 2 model review.
If I go back, it'll be live streams only. Too much time is lost in editing.
@GearsMcTinkersome I understand. I dislike editing so my video uploads is very limited. In fact, I have a furniture restoration job I did and all the footage is still on the camera. At least with a single camera woodworking,SCUBA diving and model building are mainly linear editing.
@@AirwolfCrazy Half my hobby time was eaten up by editing video. It became untenable for no pay and people telling one how one's hobby should be done. The negative nancy's take their toll. These videos here are quick talks and few cuts.

😂 it's probably Harrison Ford... 😂
It sounds like you have learned quite a bit about mechanics when it comes to cars...
Only specifically in research knowledge to this car. In practical terms, no, I know little to no mechanics, unless you mean the mechanics at the shop for al l the garage time this thing got. lolz.
Looking forward to watching this....
I'm hoping for it to go fast.
That was a sad day.....
Seems so long ago.
Wow, lots of work just to get started. I've done glass work but in controlled environments, it has got to be tough to work the resin in the California heat before it fires off. How much catalist are you using and what kind of open time have you had?
It's gong on winter, so temps are tin e 60-70 fahrenheit range. The gel coat happened on a cold day and I unintentionally under-mixed closer 0.05%, but I've been mixing hot ever since at closer to 2-3%. polyester urethane with MEKP (sp). The random leaves and occasional insect are the big worries which are not worries as they are going to happen no matter what in the open air. The various ratios had the glass cooking off an hour later for that cold gel coat day and as fast as the time it took blobbing 250g out of the cup as fast as I could with a brush. Haven't lost any to jellification yet though one or two cups began globbing up a little sooner than I'd expected.
