I needed smaller balls: Zeroing the Hawken
After second guessing the effectiveness of the laser bore sight, (See why at the end of the video) I tried .440 diameter balls in my .45 cal T/C Hawken using pillow ticking (.019) and plain cotton cloth (.01) with dismal results. After nearly getting several balls and patches stuck, and a cleaning jag on a range rod, I needed to try something drastic. That's when I happened upon some .44 (.433 diameter) balls with the .01 patches. The accuracy was surprising and validated the laser bore sight. This may be the answer to resurrect this once neglected but sentimental (if not historically accurate) gun from my youth.

Laser meets Flintlock

Here I try using a laser bore sight to get a mechanical zero on the Kibler Woodsrunner flintlock. I'm a complete "tube" to this, so maybe I'm a little intimidated by the process of drifting and filing on sights in order to zero a rifle with what would normally be considered "non adjustable iron sights. Will it work? Well, in theory, it should. Let's see.

    Hey Compadre, I found your channel about a week ago and subscribed. Really enjoying the Ferdinandina horn series. I'm extremely interested in hearing more about the trading post up on the Arkansas just south of the Kansas line. I know that the Osage had a trading center on the west side of the river and I've heard rumor that there was an actual French trading post on the east side of the river but I haven't come across any documentation of it. That would be just north of where Kaw lake is now. Looking forward to following your projects and your personna as it develops. You can see some of mine on my channel. TC

      I taught US and Oklahoma History at Carney High School a few years ago as an emergency certified teacher and I made these videos to show my class. It gave the class an idea of some local history that happened in their backyard. The farm I live on now and where the musket was found by my Grandfather is less than 2 miles from the school. Covid shit us down before we could visit the site and local museum for a field trip and I was replaced by a certified teacher that summer and I never went back.

    I have 3 of these machines. They have to be adjusted correctly. In the cocked position the front switch remains depressed. When you push the release button the motor advances the tray past center (and the spring flings it) the motor continues to run until the tray returns to the cocked (6o’clock) position which depresses the switch and shuts it off again. It appears that switch and cam are out of proper adjustment.

If I were doing it I would bend the ends of those those line tie wires out about 90° for a good hold. That amount of lead sets a pretty quickly. Nice looking decoys. Thanks for sharing your videos.

    great job Amos... im assuming you get cork from wily @ duck blind website? is the cork considered the black cork? and what thickness? ive never made decoys but have made calls, i was just going to order patterns from wily because i have nothing to go off of too start, i like the tail ends also so im guessing it mightbe trial and error on figuring them out

    • @amoschase7207
      @amoschase7207 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes sir I get it from Willy. It is the tan high density cork from Portugal. I get the 3” sheets. I like putting a bottom board on to securely attach keels, anchor lines and everything else into. The heads are also doweled all the way into the bottom board as well. I also build a cork version of a decoy where the keel is also a center board that goes all the way through the decoy vertically and the cork are like scales on either side. The 3” sheets work really well for that style. I hope to get some video up on that style as well. I’ve never used the black cork but plan on it some day. The texture is much courser so I’m thinking it would work well for canvas covered decoy floatation cells. Thank you for stopping by and watching and I hope to get back at carving and filming soon.

    How did you build the holding fixture?

    • @amoschase7207
      @amoschase7207 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheWelton49 while I've made a work holder, I did not make the one in this segment. I bought the basic holder from a gentleman off of the now defunct Decoy Carving Forum. His name escapes me as it's been several years ago. I made the extra plates that fit this one and my other fixture. I'll try and explain the general concept of how it's constructed and get up a short video explaining in detail how it was made and how it works very soon. In short, it's two pieces of steel (one about twice as long as the other and bent in an "L" shape so it can be bolted or clamped to a workbench). Both pieces of steel have a horseshoe shaped cut out that allows an extended shaft 2" trailer hitch ball to be pinched in between the two pieces of steel with four bolts. When all four bolts are tightened, the ball is held firmly in place. The threaded end of the ball sticks up in the air and is what the plate that attaches to your work is fastened two. To reposition your work piece, only one bolt needs to be loosened, the work piece repositioned to the desired location/orientation then the bolt tightened again to lock it in place. Again, that's the gist of how it's made/works. If you have a cutting torch and good drill/drill press, it could be easily made. It works very well. I keep a box end wrench on the bolt that I loosen so it's always handy. I'll try and cover it in depth with video in the next day or so. Thanks for watching my series and I hope it's providing some useful information. Stay tuned.

      Amos Chase Thank you, I look forward to it. I was bummed when I saw the forum was going away it was a real help I've only really been carving regularly for about a year. I've been using clamps to hold down my blocks to my work bench but it limits the angles I can get at them.
