The Wandering Railfans
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 7 มี.ค. 2024
Hi! We're the wandering railfans. In reality, I'm a dad of two boys who love trains. Always been a railfan myself but the boys got me way more into it and now it's a big time hobby. We like to go railfanning in the greater lower New York area and sometimes beyond, always love checking out new locations. Sometimes the boys and I wander together and sometimes I railfan solo. Norfolk Southern is always a personal favorite to railfan so we’ll go far and wide to see them in action, as well as the local railroad that runs by us: Middletown & New Jersey.
Our videos follow an episodic format based on where we go on a railfanning day, and because who doesn’t like episodic TV?! Enjoy the videos and be sure to subscribe to follow all the wanderings!

Ep60 - Freight Sightings & ALCO Chases (NYSW WS1 w/ Alco M420W chase, Appearances by CSX, CN, BCOL!)
In this episode, we spend the morning in Ridgefield Park, NJ where we plan to see an NYSW local or too. Before that, we spend some time at the station to catch up with some CSX trains near CP 5 of the River Sub. We get some early morning hotshots and get a surprise appearance from Canadian National and a British Columbia Railway Company trailing. After, we do indeed see NYSW Local WS-1 with the leased ALCO DL MLW M420W 3650. This little ALCO was really cool to see and we catch up with them in a few spots west of busy Hackensack, NJ and working PC and MC Yards. Despite not being too familiar with NYSW's local jobs well, we keep up with the ALCO quite a bit and get them more times than we thought we would. Come along and see the ALCO chase and as always, thanks for watching!

That’s Amtrak’s old 773. I saw it in a raillace magazine from years ago that showed it pulling a disabled passenger train out of Hudson Station! It sounds nice and the horn is very cool, it has always sounded like that!👍
@@electrictractiontrainsandt3063 I love seeing that thing roll around here! It’s so unique and haven’t seen anything like it. I’m glad it’s on the local around here!
Super nice catch! Excellent capture! I can watch the M&NJ trains every day!😎👌👍
@@electrictractiontrainsandt3063 100% same!
Wow that 2nd train was really coming in hot! 🔥
Certainly was!
Great video, as usual!! Is it worth the hour drive (for me) to hang out at the Ridgefield Park station for a morning and catch some trains?
@@sramsey0307 thanks so much & thanks for watching as always! I’d say going to the station at RFP is definitely worth it! If you go in the morning, you’re guaranteed some catches between CSX & NYSW. Tuesday’s or Thursday’s depending on how early you go, you’ll see NYSW’s road train from Binghamton SU100 come in. (I went on a Wednesday so really any morning you’ll get some good action for sure!)
Nice catches! The CN and BC rail coming around the turn looked so cool. Any idea what time WS-1 usually runs? I would love to see the alco or any geep working around cp5.
@@evanhourican621 thanks so much! The NYSW local work kinda varies. The mornings are probably your best bet to catch some work at MC Yard, that or after SU99 leaves at about 4-5pm. Good luck!
@@TheWanderingRailfans ok thank you!😃
2:01 wow, busy day today!
Yeah they’re really keeping busy right now that’s for sure!
Some day i,ll share my employment experiences with you when I worked for the mnj
That inspection train was haulin!
@@greenfire919 Sure was! Caught me off guard!
I understand that they sre doing a lot of trackwork between Ramsey and Port Jervis during the mid day hours(bus bridge between Ramsey and Port Jervis). Nice catch of something rare and thank your friend for the heads up.
Yeah a lot of work going on at that line right now and pretty interesting to see the busses at the stations supplementing the train outage. Always wishing for more activity on the line than it has currently! Thanks so much for watching!
Awsome video! My uncle sent me a video of this train going by while he was working, im pretty sure it was the same one in this video
No way! That’s pretty awesome. Thanks for watching as always!
At 4:39 i saw that heritage loco at horseshoe curve, one of the first heritage units I’ve ever seen lol
That’s awesome! Looks great, wish I could’ve seen it move, not sure how long it’ll be on that job.
Really cool, laid-back horn. 📯
Even the horn is tired.
Seen some serious miles!
Have you ever filmed the csx local that comes through New Windsor?
@@greenfire919 I’ve filmed L040 coming on/off the Newburgh Industrial, but never working in New Windsor or deep into the industrial. Would be awesome to do one day for sure.
Awsome video, I’m at horse shoe curve right now in altoona ive seen 7 trains todays, including a heritage unit

@TheWanderingRailfans I agree! And I've seen you here in Sugar Loaf too ... great spot as well, but nowhere near as busy!
@@sramsey0307 Yes! Sugar Loaf is a great place to see some M&NJ and NYSW! Haven’t been down that line in a bit. I hope to soon!
What time do the trains come by around there, i always try to figure out the schedule
@@EspnAndConrailRailfan the River Subdivision averages around 20-25 trains per day. There are some daily trains you can count on running, but times vary. I find that mornings and late afternoons are the best in terms of activity for sure.
Alr thx man
One of my favorite short line railroads!
Mine too for sure. More to come! Got some chases in the queue!
At 4:17 that loco reminds me of the reading lines, one of my favorite railroads
That’s awesome! They’re all pretty amazing looking. It’d truly be something if they roamed the rails regularly like they used to.
I am impressed with the scene at Steamtown, and also understand it is a national park of sorts. You folks had a wonderful time there, and thanks for sharing.
Wow looks like a great day and awesome trains! 🎉 thanks for sharing

Wow two different locomotives from two different places 😳. One from east Penn railroad the other from new jersey transit. Cool video
Definitely awesome. I think East Penn and MNJ are owned by the same company. And the NJT locomotive is always interesting to see running as a local. Glad you liked the video, thanks for watching!
Live action indeed.
Absolutely 👍🏼
Nice view and pictures as well.BTW, would this line be a possible NYC-Binghamton Amtrak route in the future?
That’s an interesting thought. I think a lot of things would need to happen in order for this to be an Amtrak line. I think it would sooner be an alternate route for Norfolk Southern between Jersey City and Binghamton but a lot of work needs to be done before that point. Track upgrades, signals, NJT logistics, etc. would be awesome though!
Great catches and scenic views! 🙌🏻
Glad you enjoyed!
My favorite part was the part with the trains in it! You digaroonski?
