All things plants and growing. I've become obsessed with experiments about growing in hydroponics, so this will document what I learn.
Everything You Need To Know About Using Masterblend
I've had a ton of success using this as my go-to nutrient, in hydroponics, garden growing, and indoor plants. It's easy to use, and the results speak for themselves, great quality produce and plants. As long as you follow the manufacturers' instructions you too will get amazing results. The best part is this stuff is priced very fairly!

I think a third control pot with neither of the products would benefit this series, especially when the results are similar for both products, if they were similar for all three then that would be interesting
24c tells me absolutely nothing
This is ey interesting! I'd love to see an experiment with Microdwarf tomato seeds, and also one comparing different inoculants. Also, if using pearlite to stat seedlings how much wate should you use so that it absorbs to where the seed is. I'm thinking of trying some seeds that way in a tray.
If you're after the best germination the paper towel method is the best thing I've found. Maintain the temp at 24 Celsius, one the seeds have a root out, plant them in perlite at the same temperature. Keep them moist. Once the first leaves open take them out of the trays and plant them however you like. This has been a great method for me.
Nice video 👍
Thanks!
Got 6 strawberry plants started in mason jars was messing around to see what they would do it was ok put a air stone in each one they blew up ⬆️ n two weeks easily tripled in size
That's great to hear, enjoy the berries!
I am also struggling with my tomatoes.
Tomatoes is my mission for this year. We'll see if I learn anything.

As others have mentioned, PH, it is VERY important in hydro. Dont Strawberries like neutral PH maybe a little acidic? Ditch the pen and get a dripper test, theyre bulletproof. Blacking out your buckets will help the roots, Southern AG has a great fungicide, one drop per gallon.
6.2 if memory serves is where I have the best results. Then I go a bit more acidic if I find the berries are tart. I've heard a few people mention southern ag but I haven't tried any of their products yet.
That tomato looks to have fusarium wilt at least that’s what I think..
I was thinking fungus might be a thing for s while but since no other plants in the grow had anything, I questioned that being it.
@ yeah, however fusarium wilt is slightly different, there are certain strains that will effect tomato crops but leave peppers growing perfectly fine. As for the strawberries, they can’t get fusarium wilt from tomatoes either… may be causing some of the confusion
I use TPS Billions 8oz. 29 bucks - treats 225 GAL. I feed only 3 times 1/2 tsp. as a seedling transfer, then when I flip to flower a 1/4 tsp. in a gallon of water and a litre each(4 plants) then repeat at 4th week of flower. But I also use silica too in between those feeds and at Veg. And then my peppers, beets, radishes, beans, pumpkins etc. I barely use a few ounces all year. GW has had some quality control problems of it even being the right product in the containers. Nice Vid Though
I'll have to look into this, thanks for the recommendation and the method of use. I have thought about adding silica, what made you choose to make the addition?
Your tomatoes are probably not getting a nutrient nutrient ratio that they like. Unfortunately, there is no one formula that works for everything. Try running a hydroponic solution designed for fruiting tomatoes. Could be a ph issue.
This happened in the grow room today, I have swapped to a tomatoe formula in the Dutch Buckets, I'm with you, I think it was a nutrient or ph problem. We'll see how it goes.
The yellow leaves are due to nutirent scarcity so the plant is moving the nutrients from the lower leaves to its upper leaves.
They were bone dry due to me and the wife both being busy I'm actually surprised all of them made it.
since the fungi are alive, and if they can work with the test plant then there should be no need for second inoculations unless something is killing the fungus. If something is killing the fungus you should eliminate that. You should also do a trial with regular compost since if regular compost contains enough fungal spores to do the same job then it would make spending money on fungal inoculate pointless. Ribwort, or Ribwort Plantain in the UK is reportedly a very good source for inoculating your plants with fungi. It's very common in the UK and according the Wiki It is present and widespread in the US
Where is the control group, meaning seed started plants without any inoculum.
I did this in a different trial and my space is limited to run one every time. It might happen in the future.
Fellow house dad…..cool beans
Heyoooo welcome to the channel!
You need to run clones for this to be legit. Not to mention use the products as per direction. 👌🏻
Once planted in the garden they were all inoculated by mixing with water and watering them in, this part is not shown.
You are using recharge wrong, it needs to be mixed with water. Did you not read the instructions?
Once planted in the garden they were all inoculated by mixing with water and watering them in, this part is not shown.
mixing tips are key!
I learned this lesson the hard way.
Your insignia is a little too close to Rob from cltv. You should change it out of respect. Don’t be riding coattails over here.
I'll have to take a look, it's literally just an H D L for housedadlife with a plant ring, hmm, here I thought I was original.
just started some strawberries the other day but put my seeds straight into soil.. going to try paper towel method now and see how that goes
Cold stratification is a game changer prior to planting as well, that with a 24 degrees celcius germination location, gold.
Neither of these effect the end product in any way period. therefore, it's all a waste of money...
I have no horse in the race, I'd love to use nothing other than nutrients, but I have root problems without great white, so I use that.
@@HouseDadLifeGrows I understand, I wouldn't eel good about masking the root issues your experiencing though. The Mycorrhizae products are pretty expensive, I bet we can solve you root zone issue pretty fast for less if not free. Are you in soil? if so, is it just a mixed like a super soil? Or fully composted? Organics take, ore that microbes and fungi to break down, the need moister heat and time before it should used be fully. First is pot size, never use a vessel to much greater than you're root size, you can pot up as needed, Try and inert mix like promix or coco coir and top-dress small applications of soil and water onto it. PH your water and test your run-off. Adjust your water PH as close to 6.0 as you can, and water till your run-off PH matches. Let it stand till its nearly dry but not dried out, before you water again (repeating the PHing process. You should be good to go full soil after the plant's vegetation reaches the volume of the size of the pot you're using.
It would have been cool for you to have went organic and then also grew out for more than a few weeks, possibly in at least 3 gallons. I don't think the fungus kicks in for a while. Either way I love the comparisons. Keep it up!
Appreciate the feedback, this trial did continue into the garden, I didn't video it, because in my mind the video was done, I just wanted to know for myself. After seeing results it's why they got put into the end of the video on the upload, it was footage I could get.
Thanks im going to take dynomyco
Happy growing!
I think when my tomato leaves curl like that my issue was PH. Not sure if that's yours I'm a novice at best.
Thanks for chiming in, would you know it I just recalibrated my PH meter, it was out, too soon to tell right now but you might be right.
@@HouseDadLifeGrowsalso a novice, recently heard Cal-Mag could be the solution for leaf curling in fruits as well
Nice controlled comparison testing of soil microbial boosters. For you can hear talk and sales pitch but number one thing is results. Some look like nutrients lockout or nutrients burn. Ive notice with seedlings like tomatoes plants and other kinds they go though this yellowing or stage where they not so good phrase too where you think its anything and its not just the plant going through it phrase and no fertilizering or other things like PH the water for even PH water to low doesnt help it out either you got to ballance out the pot of soil. Just water it not to much.
In this case I know what happened. I was away at work, and my wife was busy, the plants got sooooo bone dry, they almost ended up dead, they were all lying flat and limp when one of us finally got to them. Amazed we actually didn't even lose one.
*This guy totally smokes weed*
Lol, keep looking, tell me when you find the plants.
Recharge is not designed to be used like that. It's supposed to be a weekly compost tea.
Yes it is also an Innoculant, stop spreading false Information. As a gardener with 30 Years of experience plus studying the Cultivation of Ornamental plants in a German University for 3 years, i can assure you, a Compost Tea is made of the same stuff as these Powders, and all of these 3 products contain: Bacillus species, Trichoderma fungi, Myccorhiza fungi. Also people often confuse Trichoderma and Mycorrhizaes, they are different species of fungi, Trichodermas are parasitic and produce powerful enzymes which break down crop residues but also attack pathogens like Pythium, Fusarium and Rhizoctonia where as Mycorrhiza fungi is symbiotic, Endo Mycorrhizae attaches itself to plants Rootszones and Ecto Mycorrhizaes grow in Soil, both together build the fundamental fungi net which connects entire Forests.
Once plants hit the garden I did inoculate them all according to the recharge instructions. I didn't include it at the time because in my mind the experiment was done, I was just fixing my own curiosity. I did have footage of the end of year results which is why this reupload of this video included it. I figured it may help others.
@@HouseDadLifeGrowsthese are great tests . Please keep up the great work
I've tried recharge a few times. I feel like the very first time I used it, I saw a noticeable improvement in my plants. But now it doesn't look like it does anything. I'm wondering how 'alive' the microbes in that bag really are. Great white on the other hand works very well. My plants always respond to it and show improvement.
Where are you from my Friend? If you can somehow get your hands on this product: Tyroler Glückspilze Mykorrhiza Soluble. You will be amazed. Ive tried everything in my 3 decades of gardening, nothing can compare to it.
There is a trial I have in mind but I'll have to wait until spring time, This way it's not hear say, it'll be video documentation.
This was a great experiment! Very well designed. Unfortunately the ability for plants in the brassica family to form mycorrhizal associations is disputed (most research says they can't at all, but recent findings show it may be possible). If you'd be open to it, another round with a different crop like lettuce or carrots (which are documented to associate with mycorrhizae) might yield more significant results. 🙂
I think that might happen, I've read that research as well. The trial might have to go on longer, and I'll have to give that some thought as to how I can make this fair.
Great test but you forgot the best one rootwise from build a soil. I tried all of them, rootwise for win
Rootwise and recharge are totally different products than great white and dynomyco. They should not be compared
Exaclty…it’s mycorrhiza vs compost tea 🤔 Atleast that’s what recharge, I’m not familiar with roots wise
@ Rootwise and recharge are microbial inoculants, great white and dynomyco are mycorrhiza.
id like to try strawberries in gutters indoors, the buckets seem to take up more space than a single plant would be worth (maybe 6). never had any luck with tomatoes in hydro myself either, but have done peppers (aeroponics) and just about every kind of herb and leafy green (kratky). tomatoes seem to REALLY like the green houses and indeterminate vs determinate definitely matters. last year we grew a 17 foot tall super sweet 100 in a 1.5 gal pot (didnt realize until we removed it that its roots has penetrated the bottom of the pot and went straight in to the ground) so id say definitely avoid indeterminate ones. heirlooms apparently only do great in a green house while hybrids are fine in the garden, so maybe its a humidity thing? did you pick specific strawberries (like everbearing) for this or just whatever? seems it would be the way to go.. except some others have superior flavor. pineberries are nice too by the way if youre looking for something a bit different. thanks for the upload.
Gutters would be the most ideal, the reason I have buckets is I constantly swap for whatever I produce I want. Use seascape strawberries in a gutter with a net cup, nutrients at around 600ppm ph ideal 5.8. I'm betting you'll have massive success. I recommend a once a month great white dose in the reservoir, I could never keep bad root microbes away without it. Let me know how it goes for you, and correct me if I'm wrong.
Most people do a 70% - 30% mix of coco to perlite. Loved the video I just don't see why you wouldn't put the 2 products together anyway. Id try doing another test of just coco, just perlite and a mix then compare
I think if I ever go coco mix, it'll be 30% coco and 70% perlite, I think the plants would like it. I'll keep your test suggestion in mind. Thanks for the idea.
this was super great!
Glad you enjoyed, thanks for letting me know, I appreciate it!
You are testing Mycorrhizae, but you started with a substrate that contains mycorrhizae…..? Shouldn’t you have used something that was essentially sterile?
To get scientific you're 100% right. My ultimate goal is just to get solutions for the regular joe (me). If it works great in a sterile environment, but not with reused perlite, I know it's just not going to work me as an example.
My initial thought
Heterochromia eyes, neat!
You got it! And with the right name.
Sir you make video on irrigation automation that helps
If you do a search for Housedadlife on youtube you'll find my other channel, you can see automation done on hubitat and homey pro there if you like. Good luck!
I really liked their Jungle Juice (two part, not three part) that's now discontinued I believe....on a side note, their Nirvana (now dubbed Tasty Terpene) and Voodoo Juice are a must have IMHO
Great to hear that you have your products figured out, I remember starting out there's such a variety, to find what works for you in your setup has lots of value. Good luck with your grows.
You sure are posting a lot for how busy you've been! Awesome to see, looks like the perfect home size garden
All the content posted here so far is from my channel House Dad Life, the viewers there requested that the grow content be it's own thing. So as of right now these videos are just re uploads, once everyone moves over here I'll stop posting the grow content there. I'm also taking some time off which lets me catch up TH-cam.
no control? i use it in a layer on the hole that i repot in to, usually ill actually put the smaller pot in position in the new pot and fill and slightly pack around it then pluck it out, add the mykos, and then remove the plant from its little pot and plug it right in to the hole. never really thought of mixing it in to the soil itself.
For the most part, I just don't have the real estate to do a control as well. It might be coming in the future, I've been looking at what I can do in my grow room to make that happen. Thanks for sharing your method, I've done that in the past as well, I can say your method works well for me as well.
@@HouseDadLifeGrows yea youd really need like a flood and drain table to REALLY dial in things, even a gutter system (nft) i would assume the first plant in the gutter would get more nutes.
How I use my fungal/microbial innoculants - half a teaspoon in a gallon jug with 1 teaspoon of black strap molasses (make sure its preservative free - otherwise use 2 teaspoonfuls of raw sugar) fill with water and leave overnight then water with it. I also very lightly dust roots when transplanting.
I've seen this technique used by other growers as a way to multiply fungal colonies however you're risking introducing fly gnats
Thanks for sharing your method, makes me think I was totally using recharge wrong. I wonder how this would work with great white. Do you ever bubble the mix?
This one needs another go for sure! love me a stable PH too low and start to get lock out thanks for sharing both these products. wonder how much more nutirent it would have uptook if the ph hadnt dropped so low.
That's exactly what I was thinking about this test.
always hear great things about floraflex from hydro growers. i started with advanced nutrients liquid but have switched to Green Planet Horti line powder loved advance for not having to mix my own concentrates but powder just like darin is saying is more economical just gotta do a litttle more elbow grease
I've gone powder only, I like having the option to really customize nutrient levels, it's also nice to be able to have more nutrients on hand. Liquids take up a ton of room.
was torn between B and C upon closer inspection yup C takes it. great stuff also nice little tip at the end about getting the roots and also doing putting it in the feed solution once a week. Are all these under separate lights?
They are under the same light, to make sure there were no hot spots or plants getting nor light they were shuffled every day.
@@HouseDadLifeGrows your on top of it! was thinking that could make a slight difference in a close battle. i know my plants to the outside defs dont get nearly the same amount of par as those close to the center. I use a par meter to take measurement
Yeah this is really cool!
Glad you enjoyed!
Thanks for the video
You're welcome! Welcome to the channel!
okay, new to your channel but ive stumbled over your videos 3 times this week so it must be relevant. to do this properly germinate the seeds in rockwool (yea not a big fan either) and do like 6 of each and once they are sprouted use 2 EQUAL ones for the test. trouble germinating or stunted growth out the gate puts any plant at a marked disadvantage in hydro systems because more roots= more nutes. i use mykos personally but i also mostly use soil (hydro outdoors for cannabis is just profoundly unreasonable), i also use silica when in growing in dwc though.. but that may just be a cannabis thing. im going to look for a video of how you have your buckets set up now, thanks for sharing.
You're welcome, and I think you're right. As I rewatch how the test went, I think their are things I could do when testing to get a clearer result. Welcome to the channel and thanks for the feedback.
We used to grow with 75% perlite 25% bark. I bet a mix with Coco would work great!
Why add the bark or the coco?
@HouseDadLifeGrows iirc the bark holds water between feedings.
I’d love to see coco vs rockwool!
That might just happen.
I would rerun the experiment to see if the out come is consist.
As i review my tests, I wonder if there's a few here I should be redoing.
@HouseDadLifeGrows a good test should be multiple runs. In my opinion.
