How Long Does it Take to Fast Charge a Rivian (R1S & R1T)? And How Much Does it Cost? EV Charging!
I take a Rivian R1S to a 350-kW EVgo DC fast charging station to find out how long it takes to charge and how much it costs. The R1S SUV and R1T truck currently have the same 135-kWh battery pack (Large), but Rivian will soon produce other sizes. They also share a max charging speed of about 210-220 kW, but that speed will increase sometime soon. 350-kW fast charging stations are currently the fastest ones available.
Keep in mind that most charging should be done at home, which is much cheaper. Fast-charging stations are normally meant for out-of-town driving or if you need to top off the battery.

Rivian R1S 0-60 MPH!! Can This Big Electric SUV Hit It In 3 Seconds!?
มุมมอง 7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
In this short video, I use my GPS timer to see how long it takes a Rivian R1S to hit 60 mph (no 1-foot rollout). The R1S I used has 20-inch wheels with all-terrain tires. If it had the all-season tires, the time probably would have been a little quicker. The battery was at 80% for the first run and 79% for the second run. The Rivian R1S is a three-row electric SUV that weighs about 7,000 pounds...

What a waste of time
SUPER Audi RS e-tron GT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Im getting my first car soon which is a Model 3 & I’ve only ever drove gas vehicles and was wondering what mode is the best to use when in bumper to bumper traffic
Hello! I'd start out with Creep because it feels the most like a gas car. But try to get used to Hold because in my opinion it's the best way to drive an EV. Thanks for watching and I hope you like your new Tesla!
@@realworldelectric Thank You! Yes i love the car Ive had it for a exactly a week now. I only drove it on creep the first day on my way home from the dealership and the next morning i used hold and haven’t changed back since, the regen breaking is amazing
@@emilixno.c That's awesome! Thanks for sharing!
A2Z EV sells a CCS to Chademo adapter. I have a new one beside me still in the box for our 2023 Leaf SV Plus.
I didn't know that! Have you used it yet? Thanks for sharing!
I just got my model Y, and I'm loving it . The only thing is I'm not used to the stopping. So would it be good to be in the creep mode?
Hello! Sorry for the late reply. I would try creep mode because it's almost like driving a gas car. Thanks for watching!
Sir I am Dubai I have Tesla model 3 my car had gone roll mode I want hold mode 3 months going on still my car on roll mode not going hold and car taking too much battery
Sorry but I don't understand. Are you still using Roll mode? I'd try switching to Hold mode if you haven't. A lot of things affect efficiency, it might not be what mode you are in. Thanks!
When do the rear brake lights come on? As soon as you release the gas? Or only when you’ve come to a stop?
Hello! To my knowledge it's as soon as you hit a certain amount of deceleration. Or in other worlds, as soon as you start releasing the gas pedal in most cases. Thanks for watching!
Just found your site. Sorry you stopped. Since you bought a Leaf. You might review youtuber Lemon Tea Leaf. He did a series of videos on roadtriping with his Leaf.
I will check it out, thanks! I'll be back soon!
I bought a new Leaf 2024 SV plus. I love it...

Thank you so much for the kind comment! Thanks for watching!

You should buy a Dragy & You'd have a world record. there's a leaderboard. Guys test Racebox & get (false) faster 0-60 times. Some say it's using 1 foot rollout. Dragy matches timeslips @ tracks & won't count downhill runs. Dragy does the 1 foot rollout too, so you can compare w/ manufacturers who all do it now. I've seen a few dragy videos of the GT now. None get even the 1' rollout you are. Fastest now is 3.93, his is 3.64 w/ foot rollout. All TH-cam videos are in 4's, there's 1 youtube video of an RS hitting 3.53.
It's hard to compare my test with others because there are many variables involved when testing 0-60 times like outside temperature, battery temperature, state of charge and the surface you are on. Also, Racebox gives you the option of using the 1-foot rollout or not. I never use it. It also tells you if you are on a slope, I was not. And the GT I used was the RS model. If Dragy is more accurate, it's probably not by much. If I ran a test team for an automotive outlet I would use the more accurate one, but this is just a YT channel that I do for fun, so the accuracy of Racebox is good enough for me. Thanks!
@@realworldelectric Thanks for replying! I didn't realize yours was an RS (Did you just add that to your title?). I'd love to see you go to a track though. Can't find video of anybody but you getting close to 3.1. Full disclosure I have a relative with the non RS & a car I know is much faster, won't race side by side nor use my Dragy. Your video was used to prove I lose. No other RS has beaten me in any video I can find. This will all be irrelevant soon tho, gonna be way faster myself in a few days... You have a cool car! I've ridden in the non RS & it's peppy for sure & corners well for how heavy it is. Wish I could feel launch in yours rather than the non RS. if you got 3.1 w/o rollout though you beat Audi's # cause you're in 2's for sure then.
do you have to enable the HOLD everytime you drive? could you set it up as default, so it statys like that all the time, even when ou shut down the car? Thank you
No, once you enable it, it stays that way until you change it. Thanks for watching!
@@realworldelectric cool, thank you for the info,
Whoa…. Literally not worth it who has the time to spend the same it would cost in 2 mins to sit there for 40 minutes!? That’s wild I already need more hours in the day! This would make me need more months in the month!!! 😂
Charging does take longer than fueling a gas vehicle, but you would only charge like this if you are traveling out of town. And in many cases you would be able to eat, shop or go to the bathroom while charging on a trip. The best way to charge an EV is at home everyday (or at work). It's a lot more affordable and a lot more convenient than using a public charger. Thanks!
I wanna loan you my Dragy. So few videos of your car with real verified times.
Is Dragy much better than RaceBox? RaceBox uses GPS satellites.
@@realworldelectric Yes, Far better. Gps is only good for elevation data so harder to cheat. Accelerometers will always be better. Dragy uses both. Tested @ many tracks & accurate to .01sec
@@ohane1 Hey sorry for the late reply, I missed your reply. Racebox does have accelerometers, this is from the website: GPS receiver: 10Hz GPS, GLONASS and SBAS, -167dBm sensitivity with built-in 35dB gain antenna Accelerometer: 1kHz sampling rate with +/- 4g scale and 0.001g sensitivity Thanks!
I have a 2020 Leaf 62 KW I agree with you they are underrated if only they would have done a few updates to the interior etc., they dropped the ball with a 10-year head start.
Yup! Thanks for watching!
These CCS/Chademo charging networks are slow and not practical for frequent usage. And it seems like the Rivians are going to be guzzlers given their weight and power. $55 for 218 miles/93kwh is a lot. About 60c a kwh. Compare that to a Tesla that usually averages between 30-45c a kwh and has better range efficiency. A typical Model X/S would consume about 300wh/mile while the Rivian seems to be gulping about 450wh/mile.
True but charging prices vary. The price where I charged was high. You can't compare it to a Model S since it's a sedan, but the Model X is more efficient. But if you mostly charge at home, it doesn't cost much more. Also, the Model X is pretty ugly compared to the R1S, and if you plan on off-roading, then the choice is clear. Thanks for watching!
600 miles in my Camry, 1 minute refuel 😊
The best way to charge and EV is at home. Plug it in when you get home and you'll get a full or mostly full battery overnight. No need to go to a charging station (or in your case, a gas station). You'll never have to worry about range driving around town if you charge at home. If you travel out of town, then you might need to use a public charging station depending on how long the trip is. Also, EVs require a lot less maintenance than gas cars and tend to be more reliable. Thanks!
great informative video, unfortunately camera was all over the place I like that tesla gives quite a few options. I'm receiving my first EV, the MG4 Trophy soon and they recently added OPD, I'm looking forward to it a lot
Thank you! That video was the first one we ever filmed, that's why the camera was like that. Thanks for watching!
That’s insane my mini van can seat 8 people and for $55 I could go 400 miles EV still had a long way to go especially for road trips I’m sure these aren’t available everywhere and to wait almost an hour for less than 300 miles isn’t going to work
When it comes to hauling a lot of people on a long road trip, they do have a ways to go. But keep in mind that this Rivian is pretty extreme (huge battery pack, 800+ horsepower, as fast as a sports car, off-roads like a Jeep). There are and will be more three row SUVs with longer driving ranges and smaller battery packs that can charge faster. EVs haven't been around long, they need time to evolve and improve. Thanks for watching!
Stupidest thing I’ve ever witnessed…
@@realworldelectricgood points but also, if your off roading like a jeep and using anywhere close to 800HP how long will the battery last? An hour!?
@@MichaelGrattaroti No. It would last much longer than an hour. There are many videos out there of Rivians off-roading, go check some out. Thanks!
we are getting our R1s next week.. good info! is there discounts by the third party charging companies if you subscribe to their app and pay a monthly fee?
Congratulations! Some companies will offer a discount but to my knowledge it's not much at all. Best way to charge is at home! Thanks for watching!
Its mid size
It's more of a tweener. Between mid and full size. So is the R1T.
It gets me nausea when I test drove Tesla, it breaks so much due to I let go the pedal too much, I am having hard time to find the sweet spot, is that normal? So afraid to buy one.
It's different with everyone, but there is a sweet spot. It takes a little practice to find it. There are other EVs in the market that have adjustable brake regen if you don't like how strong it is in a Tesla.
@@realworldelectric Is this “sweet spot” different in different vehicles/models?
In our region (Cincinnati), used Leaf is very cheap. Low mileage 2020+ SV priced below 20K. Even few SL plus are below 25K. We already have an ID.4 first edition. Love it. Sold second ICE. Soon need a second EV. Looking at Leaf.
Thanks for sharing! I still like mine a lot! Just make sure your okay with its CHAdeMO port if you plan on fast charging.
And thats a very fast suv! Really puts Tesla in competition
Absolutely! Thanks for watching!
It’s very fast. But Tesla is no holds barred. The Tri-motor Plaid X and S will leave this by a freight train length. The R1S traps 111mph, the X 145mph. That performance does not come without a cost though. The Plaids are overpowered, the halfshafts get torqued and create vibrations. Gotta pay to play.
@@evolvedresponse128 That's true. The power difference of almost 200 hp helps.
@@evolvedresponse128I mean yeah obviously when you take into count the rivian is a big ass car and the x is a whole 2k pounds lighter lmao
What device do you use to see your 0-60 times
Racebox GPS timer
You are my neighbor. I live in Irvine, and recently bought 2021 Leaf from Costa Mesa Nissan as well !! The car is much quicker than I expected. No complain so far.
That's awesome! The acceleration is pretty impressive. It torque steers sometimes like a hot hatch! Thanks for watching!
Hello RWE, interesting video, thanks for that. For me it would be interesting as well what the Tesla does (I don't own one) in different inclines / declines at all these different modes. Does creep behaves like combustion engine do and becomes weaker with the inclines or will it keep a certain speed and climbs? And does the car come to a brake-hold in creep if it stops? Can you try the same with roll and hold and declines? Does the car come to a stop and/or brake-hold in Hold mode in declines (that's my main question? Hope I made it clear about my intensions :-) thanks
This is from Tesla's website, it should answer most of your questions! Creep: When close to, or at, a complete stop, the motor continues to apply torque, moving Model Y slowly forward (in Drive) or backwards (in Reverse), similar to a conventional vehicle with an automatic transmission. In some situations, such as on a steep hill or driveway, you may need to press the accelerator pedal to continue moving or to prevent Model Y from moving in the opposite direction. Hold: Maximizes range and reduces brake wear by continuing to provide regenerative braking at speeds lower than with the Creep and Roll settings. When Model Y stops, the brakes are automatically applied without you having to put your foot on the brake pedal. Whether stopped on a flat surface or a hill, Vehicle Hold keeps the brake applied, provided your foot remains off the accelerator and brake pedals. Roll: When close to, or at, a complete stop, Model Y becomes free rolling like a vehicle in Neutral. Therefore, if stopped on a slope, Model Y will roll downward. The brake does not engage, and the motor does not apply torque (until the accelerator pedal is pressed). Thanks for watching!
Try the same test, but at 35 F if you can. Just want to see the difference because some TH-camrs have said that their range dropped down to 110-120 miles per full charge in winter. Thanks.
I wish I could but it doesn't get that cold where I live. I've heard the range loss is about 10-30% in below freezing weather but it varies depending on the EV. Thanks for watching!
It's funny how people say Tesla is the only EV worth anything, I also love my 2015 24kw Leaf with only 80 miles of range. It dose anything way ask as long as the public charges are working long trips are easy 👌 the family even named her Ruby when the day come to take her to the great recycling center in the sky, I'll be looking to get one like this but red😅
Thanks for sharing!
Is the regen more aggresive on hold? Or same on all options?
To my knowledge it's the same on all stopping modes. I just added the definition of each stopping mode the video description. Thanks for watching!
Thanks
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
I have never heard of an 18 month lease??
Neither had I until I got this one. It was a special that particular dealership had at the time.
Hi, I just got my Model Y. Tried the Hold model but I found if it is at a higher speed and I suddenly see a traffic light turning to yellow, it won’t completely stop in time. I still have to use the break. Or when I need to slow down and make a turn, sometimes releasing the “gas” pedal won’t slow the speed down enough for me safely turning. Any advice on these? Thx.
It's all about timing, you'll get used to it with some practice. But if you are caught off guard by a light or if traffic is quickly slowing down you'll likely have to use the brakes. For it to properly work you have to start slowly releasing the accelerator pedal with plenty of time. If you find yourself still having to use the brakes on a turn, then start releasing the accelerator pedal earlier. Hope that helps! Thanks for commenting!
@@realworldelectric this helps. Thanks.
Wtf is session fee.
Something that shouldn't exist.🙄
Does it roll and stop to the car in front of you?
It depends on the stopping mode you are in or if you are using Autopilot. In Creep or Roll mode you have to stop the Tesla, it won't do it by itself. But in Hold it will starting coming to a stop when you let go of the accelerator pedal.
Thank you for the video!!! I recently purchased a new Leaf but should I be worried about CHAdeMO being phased out?
Thank you for watching! CHAdeMO won't be phased out anytime soon in my opinion, but they aren't as common as CCS. In my area, EVgo and ChargePoint stations usually have multiple CHAdeMO plugs, but Electrify America stations just have one. Congrats on the new Leaf!
A2Z EV sells a CCS to Chademo adapter. I have a new one beside me still in the box for our 2023 Leaf SV Plus.
Very important for people to understand that charging is a different mindset than fueling (if you can charge at home). If you are on your way home and find youself needing to stop at a supercharger, it really is a more efficient use of your time to just charge to whatever level gets you home. Do not attempt to "top off" at a supercharger unless your next destination is going to be another supercharger.
I completely agree. If you own an EV, charging at home or at work is the best way to charge. Relying on public stations is expensive and not always convenient. Supercharging stations should only be used for out of town trips or if you need charge to get you home. Thanks for commenting!
Purchased a ‘21 S Plus and haven’t paid for fuel/electricity cost in a year and 1/2. The Nissan dealer 10 min from my work lets me charge for free using their CHADEMO station. I commute 90 miles a day round trip. It’s AWESOME!
Free charging is the best! Thanks for commenting!
I just bought another Tesla after a short visit to my Nissan dealer to check a 2023 Leaf. After owning 2012 Leaf for the last 3 year. I wanted to continuo with another “good value Leaf””. The dealer didn’t have any base model Leaf and the SV they had had a mark up of $3k. $37k plus 3k minus the Tax credits puts me at same value as the model 3 base model with a 275 range and all the supercharged network. My 3 cost me 43k minus the tax and puts me on the same money as the Leaf with a small battery and no charging network. I owned both Tesla and Leaf and trust me there is no comparison. I have driven Leaf for over 30k miles and Tesla for 14k miles.
I got a 2016 Colorado diesel. I get 550 miles per tank. It cost me 97 dollars to fill from empty. I'll stick with my 2.8 duramax
But if you charge an EV at home it would be cheaper than $97 to charge the battery, and you'd leave your drive way everyday with a full or mostly full battery. Fast charging stations are really only meant for long trips or if you need to top off the battery to get somewhere. EVs are best for around town driving. If you take lots of long tips out of town, you should probably stick with a gas or in your case, a diesel vehicle. Also, think about maintenance costs. There is very little maintenance with EVs and brakes last a long time since the motors do most of the braking. You'll be spending more money and time at the mechanic or dealership with a gas or diesel vehicle. Thanks for commenting!
I guess that depends on where you live. My Raptor cost me almost $150 to fill up.
@@KAZ109but only takes like 5 mins to fill! Way more worth it in my opinion! But I really don’t have time to waste so in my case I think it’s worth it to cut out all this time I’d potentially be spending at random out of the way charging points
So you did not buy a Leaf, you are leasing one?
Yes, I leased this Leaf, the lease ends in about 9 months. And I actually purchased a second Leaf last month in order to get the $7,500 EV tax credit. I will be making a video on that one soon!
Had a three year lease on a 2018 Leaf and it was a fine car as a first EV. It hooked me on one pedal driving and I miss having the charging port at the front of the car. I never understood why EV makers try to mimic gas filling port locations when most EV charging stations are nose-in type slots. But the Leaf had some annoying features that prevented me from buying out the lease and keeping it. The main one was those "wings" on either side of the center console. They jutted out at an angle that I kept rubbing the side of my knee against and after an hour of driving I'd get a sore spot. It seems that they may have pulled those in a bit or made them thinner on your model year. Congrats on your purchase.
Thanks for commenting! What do you own now? I got hooked on one-pedal driving when I first drove a Bolt EV in 2017. I also like how the charging port is at the front. I just wish it was a CCS one, but fortunately, there are plenty of CHAdeMO ones in my area. I don't have that problem with the center console, Nissan likely adjusted it. It's a very good EV, but once my lease ends I'll likely get a more modern EV.
@@realworldelectric - We ended up with a Model Y which we took delivery of in November of 2022. I really wanted to drive the Nissan Ariya, but when we were shopping in the spring of 22, they just were not available to drive (or even see). Same with the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The dealer kept saying "Come back next month and we'll have some." Never happened. We rejected the Volkswagen ID.4 because it would not do actual one-pedal driving. Same with the Audi e-Tron. Drove the Mustang Mach-E and liked it well enough, but the dealer wanted an extra $12k just for the privilege of buying from them. We drove a Bolt before we leased the Leaf, back in 2017, but hated the seats. They may as well have just put in milk crates to sit on.
@@MisterLumpkin Congrats on the Model Y! Spring of 2022 wasn't easy for most people shopping for EVs, dealership inventories were low and there were lots of mark ups. The Ariya should be hitting dealerships soon. The Bolt's seats were pretty terrible but the ones on the latest model are much better.
wow, a pickup truck gasoline , like the ford f-150 echo should be $20 MPG, this is equivalent to 11 gallons at 11X3.80 = $42, man not worth it being electric here, unless you charge at home
If you own an EV, charging at home or at work is highly recommended not only for the convenience but for the cost. Fast charging stations, like the one I used in the video, can be expensive depending on the location and size of the battery you are charging. Slower Level 2 charging stations are much cheaper but take a lot longer. I don't understand your math, sorry. I'm pretty sure you mean the F-150 EcoBoost which is a turbocharged 2.7-liter or 3.5-liter V6, it gets between 20-22 mpg combined driving. But the fuel tank size ranges between 23-26 gallons. Filling that tank at $3.80 would be at least $75.
@@realworldelectric yes, I divided the 220 miles by 20 mpg (for Ford) got 11-gallon equivalent with your charging range, so ford needs 11 gallons to go the same distance you charged your EV.
@@kentma7516 I see what you mean now, thanks for clarifying! But like the price of gas, the price of kWh varies. I live in Califnoria, so it's cheaper in other states.
That small spider...
It was there the whole time watching me! lol!
Wow that's expensive. $55 is 13.75/gal at $4/gal. 218 miles / 16mpg is 13.62/gal. The kicker where I am at, it's $3/gal. 93kWh / $55 is $1.69/kWh. 😭 The benefits of charging at home I guess. Would have been $11 at my place. At $3/gal a 60mpg cars fuel cost would be the same. Or is my math just way off here?
The first part makes sense, but I'm not sure why you are dividing 218 miles by 16 mpg. It would be 55/93 which is $.59/kWh, but the app says the price is $.50/kWh today. It might have been more expensive when I filmed this in October. But EVgo charging prices vary depending on where you live, it's cheaper in most other states. I live in California. As for the last part, the only cars that get 60 mpg are small hybrids. The EPA says the Prius Eco gets 56 mpg and has an 11.3-gallon tank. So filling a Prius Eco would be cheaper. But the R1S is about the size of a Chevy Tahoe which has a 24-gallon tank. If you fill a Tahoe's tank it would be anywhere from about $65-100 depending on where you live. If I had charged 90% of the Rivian's battery (let's say 5-95%), it would have been about $80 where I live. But like you say, charging at home is WAY cheaper! Thanks for commenting!
@@realworldelectric What part of CA? OC?
@@fmonk I'm in Costa Mesa but that charging station is in Irvine. Are you in the area?
@@realworldelectric Work in CM. Live south of Irvine.
@@fmonk Cool! The charging station I used in the video is next to Boomers!
To make a long story short ... I bought a Nissan because there're all marked up...ha
That's part of it, but I also couldn't find some EVs at all like the Mach-E and ID.4, they were sold out for months. I almost went for a Bolt EV but the Leaf was a better deal and I preferred the 18-month lease versus the Bolt's 3-year lease. I wasn't sure how much I'd like the Leaf (I hadn't driven one since 2017), but I really like it so far.
Chademo is the biggest problem with the Leaf. I cant believe they didnt change over in the upcoming 2023 but their other EV that is comming out has ccs. Long trips are a pain and longer than a ccs would take because there are a lot less chademo.
True, but the other big problem is the air-cooled battery that heats up quickly during DC fast charging. That's why the Leaf is more of a city car, it's not made for long road trips. The longest trip I've done in mine is 200 miles. If you charge at home or at work and mostly drive around town, then it's not a problem. In my area, there are lots of CHAdeMo plugs, so it's not a problem for me, but it can be in other parts of the country.
If I missed it I'm sorry but what year is it?
A 2021! Thanks!
I like hold mode when driving forward but creep mode for reversing the car. Hold mode is just hard to control reversing speed.
