What I Learned From Quitting Grad School
มุมมอง 49728 วันที่ผ่านมา
In this video, I use my experience of quitting my clinical psychology PhD to frame a larger conversation about choice, identity, fate, and destiny. As always, there are some moments about creativity and creative practice, near the end of the video. Also, I mention author and existential psychotherapist Emmy van Deurzen in the video. She has a lovely TH-cam channel @EmmyvanDeurzen If you found t...
Trust Your Voice
มุมมอง 352หลายเดือนก่อน
This video is not only about learning to trust your voice, but also how powerful and psychoactive the voice can be. I also explore the need to offer listeners/others the time, space, and patience to receive what the speaker is saying. 0:00 Speaking about speaking. 1:44 Voice lessons and somatic symptoms, 2:24 The power of the voice; responsibility. 3:32 When emotions get in the way. 3:56 Being ...
How NOT To Listen
มุมมอง 157หลายเดือนก่อน
We all cling to old and outdated modes of engaging when faced with the possibility of an open encounter (with ourselves and with others). In this video, I discuss various tendencies of avoidance as well as the possibility of becoming more internally spacious, more open, and more authentically responsive to each moment. Please like, share, and subscribe! Chapters 0:00 Intro to tendencies of avoi...
Learning to Listen
มุมมอง 212หลายเดือนก่อน
After years of studying nonviolent communication, mindful communication, and similar techniques, I eventually had to accept that they just did not work for me. I am still grappling with how to convey what listening truly is and feels like; it's not easy to put it into words. But still, I tried. here is my first attempt (surely one of many). May it be of some benefit to somebody out there! 0:00 ...
Being a Sensitive Person
มุมมอง 1132 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video, I speak about the importance of being sensitive while remaining vigilant about over-stimulation, going numb, and psychologically checking out. I also talk about my own experiences of overwhelm, somatic empathy, and the refrain I heard over and over as a child: "Why are you so sensitive?" Chapters 0:00 - 0:36 Introducing Sensitivity 0:37 - 1:29 Sensitivity as a Human Necessity 1:3...

CARNIVAL (Shovels & Rope)
มุมมอง 846 หลายเดือนก่อน
A cover of one of my favorite songs by Cary Ann Hearst & Michael Trent, better known as Shovels & Rope. “Carnival” was featured on their 2012 album O’ Be Joyful. Due to tiredness, I flubbed some of the lyrics in the chorus (I left out the line "I wait for you to reappear," which, oddly enough, has always been one of my favorite lines to sing). Anyway, I figured Cary Ann and Michael would forgiv...
MY MORPHINE (Gillian Welch)

A simple keys and voice rendition of "My Morphine," written by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, featured on Welch's 1998 album, Hell Among the Yearlings. Please like, share, and subscribe if you feel inspired! I'm continuing to enjoy playing with video, and this is my first time using multiple cameras for the same shoot. WRAPPED AROUND YOUR FINGER (The Police)
มุมมอง 666 หลายเดือนก่อน
A very piano-bar-Tori-Amos-inspired cover of The Police song, "Wrapped Around Your Finger," filmed, recorded, mixed, edited, performed, blah blah blah by yours truly. This is the first of many music video experiments. Please like, subscribe, and share if you feel so inclined! And head to auva.substack.com for more original writing, music, and more.

Sooo good. Danny!! I didn’t know you made these videos! I’m a highly sensitive person so everything you are saying 🙌👌🏻 soooo good.
@summerrodgers1170 glad to hear it! Haha, I just started a month ago! Still pretty fresh. Thanks for watching!
I feel like a listener inevitably contextualizes what they hear into their own life. It just seems automatic. I’m a believer that we all hear something different from the same sentence. We either focus on a certain idea or get stuck on a word that was said. Human minds are quite busy with thought and I feel it’s somewhat difficult to turn off thinking, even while someone is talking, even when intently listening.
Daniel!! This video actually pointed out a lot of things to me. Not necessarily flaws in listening, but things that I could definitely work through. I'm the type of person who's brain will pick up and fixate on specific statements or things that people say and then think about what to say next. All of the a sudden, I'm realizing that I'm no longer listening or engaged with the person I'm listening to because I just missed the next few things they were saying while thinking about something they said previously. It's something that I've known I've done for some time and am working really hard to get over and become a better listener. Often people also just need someone to talk to, and being there to listen to them is what they need. Not everything that is being spoken needs a response and in some situations, the silence can mean more then a verbal response.
I know what you mean, and I think everyone can relate to it. It can be challenging to maintain focus and attention sometimes, and it's so easy to blank out or get distracted/hung up on something, then lose the thread of the conversation. Happens to me all the time! I'm actually talking about that in the upcoming video 😀. Stay tuned, and thanks for responding! <3
This is so helpful for people wondering how to be there for someone who's grieving or is in the midst of a huge, overwhelming trauma. Listening is a great gift. It really is a legitimate skill that is tangibly worked on.
Thanks for responding, Andi! Somehow, it makes me think of all the times in the past I was not such a great listener to someone in need - but every time I flubbed an interaction, with a friend or a client, I really learned a lot. You may have just given me an idea for another video! ❤️
Danny this is so right. You are wise.
Well said Daniel! I have many thoughts popping up to the various points you make in this video. Would love to discuss with you sometime when we get the chance!

Nice video! Great practice in not overthinking. I find that being in the exact moment of creating something are some of the best parts of my life. If that makes any sense in English.
