Hi, my name is Olivia and I make crochet videos!
I've been crocheting since I was 11 years old (I'm currently 25) and while I've taken breaks over the years, I always seem to come back. 😊

Crocheting With Velvet Yarn For The First Time | Crochet With Me | Revamping My Etsy Listing | OiC
10% off my entire Etsy shop from until Sept 21! Don't miss out! 😁: oliviaiscrocheting.etsy.com
I was at Walmart and decided to stop by the yarn section (of course 😊) and for the first time I noticed that they had Bernat Velvet yarn. I have never worked with velvet yarn before (Bernat or otherwise), but after feeling the texture in the store, I knew I wanted to revamp my crochet scruchies from chenille yarn to velvet. So I bought 3 skeins of the Bernat Velvet yarn, came home, and started crocheting. In this video I share my experience of using velvet yarn for the first time, update my scrunchie listing on Etsy, and do a side by side comparison of my chenille and velvet scrunchies.

Thank you 😊
Walmarts color selection is unfortunately limited but they do have good yarn
Yeah, I realized that when I went to another Walmart and they only had white. 🙃 So I’ll have to either order from the Yarnspirations website or Amazon.
@@OliviaIsCrochetingdo you not have a Joann’s near you in Canada? I find the bernat velvet at Joann’s
Unfortunately, Joann is only in USA.
So happy to see you’ve made sales! 🎉❤❤ and great video 🥰

Etsy adds is a big scam . You will pay more than win .
Do Free shipping that will resolve everything. Add the dish of shipping on the item .
Here in the US is the same . I sell in Etsy crochet items too but I have $35 free shipping and if people order more than 1 item they have the option to send me a message to do a combine shipping .

Thank you for this. I've had to do partial refunds for Etsy overcharging shipping on my last few orders.
You’re welcome, I’m glad I could share some useful information! 😁 I saw some people on Reddit who also have been giving partial refunds because the calculated shipping was too high, and some of these posts go back years. It doesn’t seem like Etsy plans on fixing this any time soon. 🤔
You deserve more views and likes how are you not viral?? I like your content
Thank you for your kind words. 😊 PS. I checked out your channel and you have some very cute projects! Also, kudos to you for recording while crocheting. I always plan to, and then I end up crocheting without setting up my camera. 😅
Hi Olivia, I have been selling on Etsy since 2009 and can tell you that the shipping cost in Canada is way more than what you have yours set to be. My packages measure 24 inches long/18 inches wide and about 2cm in height. I use the same size envelope on every order. In Canada if you can keep your package as flat as possible (2cm or less) you can use a stamp and send orders as over sized letter mail for $2.09. If your items are larger than that you would need to ship via-Canada Post expedited at the least. That will cost you at least $16.00. Packages from B.C to Ontario when not sent via-over sized letter mail would be $18.74 at the lowest. I only use padded envelopes which are quite small. Please reconsider your shipping within Canada. The United States is another story. Etsy gives a lower discounted shipping rate to its sellers for shipping there. My U.S.A orders are sent there tracked for $7.77. Just keep in mind that over sized letter mail does not have tracking and that is only an option within Canada. You can also get flat rate shipping boxes from the post office/outlets which I think are around $16.00. I would suggest you look into that as its more of a recent addition to Canada Post. It's not an option with Etsy shipping labels. You could also look into chitchats.I don't know anything about their rates. That isn't an option for me. Your shop looks great! Sorry about being so wordy! Hopefully this info helps. I love watching crochet small business videos while I work on my jewelry creations. Most likely why I was suggested your video. :) Best Wishes! Joella
Thank you for all the valuable information 😁! It's good to hear advice from a fellow Canadian seller (all the Etsy business videos I've seen on TH-cam are from Americans). I know from sending personal packages that shipping within Canada is expensive, but I was hoping it would be (somewhat) affordable when buying through Etsy; but apparently not. I know I likely underpriced my shipping cost (as I said in the video, I was originally going to set it at $10), but I'm ok losing money on my first few sales. Once my shop has built up a reputation, and I've gotten a few reviews, I will adjust my shipping prices based on the price of the labels I end up buying. I just find it a little unfortunate that Canadian sellers are at somewhat of a disadvantage when it comes to shipping costs. It's something that is out of our control, and you can't pay it out of pocket every time or your business won't be profitable 😔. You could sell a product at a lower price than someone else, but then when shipping is factored in, their product ends up being cheaper; resulting in them getting the sale. I know price isn't everything when it comes to someone committing to a purchase, but it is definitely a factor. However, I did just look into ChitChats and the estimated shipping costs seem to be cheaper than Etsy's. So thank you for suggesting that 😁! I just signed up for ChitChat changed all of my shipping to ChitChat Select instead of Canada Post. 🙂 PS. I know we are in different niches, but as a seasoned seller, if you have any advice for getting your first few sales on Etsy; my ears are open. 😊 PPS. Thank you for the compliment on my shop, and I hope you enjoy more of my content moving forward. 😊

This is very good to know.

You’re welcome 😊
There was some chatter that Etsy will prioritize anyone with shipping under $6 US. I think making all product shipping CA$5 is smart!
Interesting, I never heard about that; thanks for letting me know. 😁 Let's see if my new shipping price evokes my first sale. 🤞🏾
I opened my shop this spring and I'm still waiting on my first sale. Thank you so much for posting these videos. They are very informative and have really helped me to keep trying when I have wanted to just give up.
I'm glad my videos have been informative and encouraging! 😊 I too am waiting on my first sale (technically I have 2, but those are from 2 years ago when I was selling digital products; not crochet), and I just believe it's a waiting game. As long as your products are good quality, one day someone will make a purchase. I know it's frustrating waiting (I wake up every morning hoping to see a notification from the Etsy seller app 😅), but I know someday it will be worth it. 😊
There are websites you can use to get an idea for shipping cost. You can try putting in random Canadian zipcodes and trying to set a price that way. Though, I used Etsy's for this once for an order going from the US to Canada and the buyer told me the shipping cost was higher when checking out than the website said. I have no idea what was happening there. Anyway, I ship in the US from the East Coast and shipping has usually been about 3-5$ USD. No idea if Canadian shipping is more expensive or what but thats my experience
From what I've read online, since Canada has a fairly small population in relation to the land area, it costs more to ship because people are so spread out. But that reasoning doesn't really make sense to me, because when I did my mock checkout, I put in a postal code that's up the street from where it would be shipping from; yet the shipping was still over $10. I have used some websites to give me estimates, and the estimates were still rather high. I guess I'll just have to wait to get my first order to see how much it will actually cost me to buy the shipping label. If I end up losing money on shipping for my first few orders, that's ok; I'll adjust the price moving forward depending on the outcome. 🙂
@@OliviaIsCrocheting Wow that is really strange. I think Etsy gives you (they at least claim to) reduced prices for shipping.

Thank you for the update! It encouraged me to turn on Etsy ads for my own shop. I will say, I have also not gotten any sales yet because of the Etsy ads, but it's been less than a month. What I did do, after 2 days of them on, I noticed that I was hitting the dollar mark by the afternoon. I didn't want my ads to disappear in the evenings (I think that's when most people shop) so I upped my budget to 2.50 a day. Still no sales, but my views and clicks aren't stopping midday. And I don't always hit that 2.50 mark. It's usually under a dollar still. I might adjust that budget in the future, as it can add up. Thanks again for sharing!
You're welcome, I'm glad my videos have been helpful. 😊 I'm thinking of potentially increasing my ad budget as well, but I'm going to let my sale run for about a week or so and then make my decision after that (depending on how things go). 🙂
@@OliviaIsCrocheting that might be a smarter move. Everything I've seen suggests sticking with your settings and campaign for at least 30 days. But you also get more info the longer you run it.
You should see which listings are getting the most favorites. Sellers can set up discounts for people who favorite their items and buyers know that so theyll favorite an item hoping they get a discount. I know this is really annoying advice but you should offer free shipping for domestic purchases. Etsy says they advertise those better or something. U can get rid of the free shipping after you've had a few sales and built trust with your buyers. Just make sure you only have the cheapest option available as free shipping. What ive learned from watching videos about etsy is lean into whats doing well... your elephant is getting so many clicks? Add another color option. Maybe try switching up the cover image I only have 23 sales but all of them are from this summer so ik im not 100% qualified to give advice but this is stuff thats worked for me and ive heard from youtubers
Thank you for the advice, I'll definitely look more into the things you've mentioned. 😁

I was so close to writing a paragraph to help you understand etsy ads more LOL I'm so glad you figured out how they work. I was also super confused when I started using them. I also didn't understand why some clicks were worth 15 while others are worth 30. Thanks for explaining! The dyed hair looks STUNNING! Just watched your two videos and theyre both great! Cant wait to watch more :)
Lol, the paragraph would've been much appreciated, because I honestly had no clue what I was doing (and probably still have more to learn). 😅 I'm glad I was able to share some knowledge about the ad click pricing and that you found it helpful. 😊 Thank you for the compliment on my hair! Fun fact, I'm a Track & Field athlete and I competed at the Canadian Olympic Trials this year. Since the colours of the Canadian flag are red and white, I decided to make my hair match the flag. 😁 I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the 2 videos you've seen from me.
