    What does the term “floating gears” mean? Are you just shifting clean asf or smthn?

    • @idahofarmlife

      In a way, yes. Floating gears means to shift without the clutch. You just match the speed and engine rpm perfectly, so your shifter just "floats" into the next gear. If you do it wrong, the gears will grind, but it you do it right, it makes shifting easier. Smaller transmissions in cars and pickups require use of the clutch, floating gears isn't good on them. However, bigger transmissions in semis are tougher and can handle the gears being floated.

    • @oldguydoesstuff120

      @@idahofarmlife I've never driven a semi, so I can't compare. But I've shifted every manual car I've owned without the clutch. Yes, there was a bit of gear grinding as I learned, but once I learned, it wasn't too hard and I rarely missed. Learned to downshift without the clutch as well. That's a bit trickier.

    • @Dee12327

      @@oldguydoesstuff120im a trucker, and Ive drove many manual cars, i own one now to go back and forth to work with, not using the clutch will 100 percent screw your transmission, they’re not meant to be shifted without the clutch.. a tractor is completely different, they literally fall into gear, its actually easier in the clutch to float gears because you’re putting zero wear on it.

    • @growthefarmup2606

      A good owner-operator floats the gears to save the clutch. Because transmissions and clutches are expensive. Once you get good, the gears simply fall into place as you match your R. P. M and speed through the upshifts. And then you can also downshift through. The Jake brakes and float the gears. That way, the only time a good driver uses. The clutch is to get the truck in first gear or reverse and moving around. A yard or something

    The round up ready beets have made growing beets much nicer. You can live with a little trash we used to have to plow and have no trash in the beds so you could run the cutaways and knives up close on the first cultivation and any trash would plug up and take a row of beets out. Since they've come up with the roundup ready beets nobody even cultivates they just furrow out for the water. Rows and to harvest. Have a good day.

    • @idahofarmlife

      There's enough dumps around that the haul isn't too bad. When there wasn't much of a line at the dump, the digger didn't wait very long for the next round of trucks. A few more trucks would have been perfect.

    • @idahofarmer6775

      Back 30 years ago there was a lot more beets grown around that area with 4 pilers north of town where are you go now and 2 pilers south of town. Then the sugar company reduced the south dump to 1 piler for about 10 years before closing it completely and selling the ground. I don't know if you are old enough to remember the beet dump being there but you are very familiar with the ground it was on LoL. We dug and hauled a lot of beets in to that dump years ago. Alot of the tare dirt got dumped on your grandpa's ground for a few years.

    Hey, i was wondering why self-propelled swathers are used there instead of a 30ft triple mowers on a tractor? Getting ready to move to idaho

    • @idahofarmlife

      I think a big reason is that they are fairly new in our area, only one farmer has one that I've seen, and Claas is the only company that sells them here. However, self-propelled swathers from all brands are sold here, so you have more of a selection. Another reason is that you also have to have a tractor with a front 3 point and pto to run the mower, and such tractors are hard to find. So you either have to get one shipped in from somewhere (possibly the factory), or buy a normal tractor and install a front 3 point and pto on it yourself. Finally, most people in our area don't have enough acres to justify purchasing and piecing together that setup since even a used tractor and triple mower would cost anywhere from 3 to 4 hundred thousand dollars. I personally would not be against a triple mower, but for those of us who bale, I think I swather leaves better windrows for a rake to pick up. A triple mower hardly leaves any gap between the windrows, which makes it work better to use with mergers that run in front of choppers.

    • @eldwingrettahorst9958

      @@idahofarmlife interesting. I figured it was an availability thing. Interesting on the kind of windrow. I just figured a windrow thrown out wide would help with drying, but that probably isn't a huge issue in idaho. I'm looking to get into custom farming and was curious.

    • @idahofarmlife

      You do want the windrow wide; however, it's just the spacing between the three mowers on the tractor places the hay closer together than a swather does. If you are just getting into the business, a swather would be the more justifiable option compared to the triple mower, especially with custom jobs as they can navigate land better. Most custom swathing jobs that I've done involve little 5 to 10 acre fields where a triple mower would be a nuisance.

    • @eldwingrettahorst9958

      @@idahofarmlife yeah I noticed that with the triple mowers. Not sure if I'll get into the cutting end of it or stick with my original plan on custom hay stacking. The area im moving to, there are no large square hay stackers that I have seen.

    • @idahofarmlife

      Our tractors all have GPS systems on them, so we just have to drive along a pivot track once to get the circle, and then the GPS will drive the tractor in a circle the rest of the time.
