Lobster fry release, Newquay bays, Seals & Mackerel. Above Average Angler.
Releasing Baby Lobsters from Padstow Hatchery, my grandkids first step into conservation. A bit of mackerel fishing and exploring the Newquay bays/coves in my nephew Paul's RIB.
Sorry, I have not put on much content lately, but I've been out of action after a fall,
hoping to get out more as I regain my mobility.

    Great video sire. I'm a disabled fly fisherman in Sheffield with a family. We wondered how you get to that rasperry bay? I sometimes turn right at the viaduct end after you cross it(start of snake pass) and drive down that arm of the reservoir. Is it near there? Many thanks.

      Turn right after Yorkshire Bridge Inn, then follow the shore Rd round. You'd have to call and book at the office, they'd give you the combination for lock. They're very good with less abled anglers pal. It's all their website. Glad you enjoyed it.

    Those sand banks where its soft we used to get sprats or sand eals as we called them we used to wade along the edge with some thing called a sprat hook used to cut through the sand and flick them out onto the dry sand we used them for bass bait my father and Grandfather were always doing it deadly bait for bass I am taking about 70 years ago the fishing of the beach in those days was amazing it was common to catch 6-10 lb bass and friend of my father caught 17 lb sea trout.

    • @AboveAverageAngler
      @AboveAverageAngler 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeh... a time machine would be bloody handy pal. Never heard of a Sprat hook, sort of thing that would have been on Jack Hargreaves, Out of Town, back in the 70's. If your local you'll have seen massive change down there. I've got local relatives, so know it well.

      @@AboveAverageAngler we used to make our own sprat hooks I had one up until a couple of years ago always intended to come down that far but have not been on Crantock beach for 30 years or there abouts sprats are the best bait for bass we used go down at low tide fairly well down towards the sea you have to be very careful there are or used to be some very soft areas. I seem to remember that there might have even been a sign on the cliff side in those days something dangerous but if you’re interested in a sprat hook I will try and find my old one and send a photograph. Best regards.

    Hello Alan, Thank you for sharing with us your video. Everything looked good for you to catch and I'm sorry you didn't. You deserved to, for your effort alone. I fly fish, and a few years ago, we holidayed in North Wales, once near Conwy, then Tenby. Both beautiful, beautiful places. I tie my own flies and made a few lure type flies with white marabou tails and gold tinsel, repesenting segmented bodies, maybe some red in the gill area. On some of them, I made foam posts to keep them up in the water. The others I weighted to get them down in any current. My intention was to represent small fry and maybe attract Bass, Mullet, or an odd Sea Trout? I fly fished in the Conwy Estuary and another year on the rocks at Manorbier beach, Tenby area. It was nice just to get out and have cast, knowing anything could happen. As it happened, nothing did, lol. However, when I was fishing Conwy, mid afternoon, a big silver fish jumped clean out of the water, in the distance. It was lovely to see and I would guess it was a Sea Trout? I don't know how you went on with your fishing tackle, using it in saltwater? I used an older rod I wasn't too fussed about and a graphite Snowbee reel. Both times when I arrived home, I stripped the running line off the reel and thoroughly washed everything as saltwater can be so damaging if you don't respect it. Anyway, at least we had a go and any experience and effort is better than none at all. Best wishes and tight lines, Ian, Lancashire.

    Get an empty 2kg onion bag, the mesh type, fill it full of ripped up bread and put a fair sized stone in it. Tie up the neck and attach a long line for retrieval and throw it out into the channel, it acts as an attractor, I found if you cast bread into the water it drifts away taking the fish with it, you can get bread flies for mullet fishing or there’s patterns to tie your own I’ve caught mullet like this in the med around Greece, not on fly gear but on a normal course rod fishing free floating flake bread fished fly style if u catch my drift, I’m taking the fly gear next time however as I’m determined to do it, it’s quite common around the canaries and fueteventura, I’ve seen some content of huge mullet taken there on the fly;-)

      Sounds like a cunning plan. I caught a cracking Guilt head bream of a rock jetty in Ibiza a couple of months back. Figured if the tide was ebbing the freeby bread chunks would go out into the bay, and you could see fish following it back to me. Had to reduce the hook size to get any takes tho. 65cm the Guilt was, reet scrapper on light tackle

    I did the same around 17 years ago after planning for a week I got there just to late as the tide turned. Best I got was a seaward bound mullet following a trimmed snail pattern (to look like a piece of broken bread). The follow was exciting but the mullet had more pressing needs. For those who haven't tried it a fly rod is great way to catch fish right fom the first contact. From the take the rest of the world dissppears and you are angling for your life! I'd be happy to live there and fish everyday for the rest of my time.

    • @AboveAverageAngler
      @AboveAverageAngler 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeh.. it's a reservoir trout rod. I've got so many fly rods of varying weights, that I find it hard to justify getting a light spinning rod. Just the reel seat as you identified, which makes it sometimes a little awkward. Basically, I've got way too many rods, and I'm desperately trying not to add to em. For light lures, that particular rod might be a little heavy. I've got a 3wt nymphing rod which might be better for small perch/trout session with very light lures. Thanks for the interest😉

      Hi Billy .. A few people have commented about that. I usually keep em on for a couple of seasons, but I have never seen any evidence of degradation, but I take your point. PVC waders?!! How do you stick them?

    • @AboveAverageAngler
      @AboveAverageAngler 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, waders have been the most expensive fishing item, draining my limited budget for years. Breathable waders, I'm struggling to get a 2nd season out of. Doesn't make any sense. I went to a fishing match on Filey Brigg, 16/18 anglers had VASS waders on. So I'm now the proud owner of Wellies, Thighs and Chest(studded). Yeh it's a bit harder to wade in heavy water and a bit sweaty in Chestys in hot weather if you're walking. £ wise, it's a no-brainer.
