STEM Conceptual PlayWorld model in Primary School
In this video Charina explains how she uses Fleer’s Conceptual PlayWorld model to engage students in STEM from the Foundation year (5 year olds) to Year 6 (11 year olds).
Fleer’s Conceptual PlayWorld is an evidence-informed model of teaching STEM where you select a dramatic and emotionally charged story, where students easily build a relationship with the characters. The students and teacher ‘jump’ into the story and live through the adventures of the storybook. The teacher introduces a play problem that is solved through researching STEM concepts. The teacher is a play partner and supports the children’s imagination as they model and build solutions through the drama of the problem and story narrative. The research has been informed by cultural-historical theory. You can find research and theory papers, along with practical resources on the website: www.monash.edu/conceptual-playworld
