Making Window Screens
These screens are made from the kits and components available at Home Depot and many other places. We all either have screens that need repair or replacement, or we will soon. This video shows the very basics. The kits are straightforward, but sometimes seeing somebody else fumble through something is reassuring for those who have never done it before.

Using Tiny Magnets to Keep the Lid on My Heart-Shaped Lidded Box
มุมมอง 268หลายเดือนก่อน
This is not the most complex video you could watch today, but if you make these boxes, then this might be just the thing for you. I've seen people use a small dowel or screw to fix the lid to the box so it swivels, and I've seen hinges awkwardly mounted to the back. I don't like these methods, so I went for little magnets. They won't absolutely secure the lid, but it sticks it down just enough ...
SHOP PROJECT: Finishing Cabinet
มุมมอง 212หลายเดือนก่อน
I am not a neat person. There, I've said it. But even as disorganized as I might be, there comes a point when I just HAVE to make my life simpler, stop fighting clumsy cabinets, and just make my work easier. This project was made with the cutoffs from another project, mostly out of 1/2" MDF, some 1/8" hardboard (I have way more of this stuff than I need), and some small scraps of 1/4" MDF. Noth...
Curtiss P-40 WARHAWK
มุมมอง 3423 หลายเดือนก่อน
It's another airplane project, and a little bit more reduction in the ol' scrap pile. This started with a couple of pieces of chunky old pine that a friend gave me that he got from his father. I decided to use half of one to make this Curtiss P-40 WARHAWK, a WWII-era fighter. I'm also looking at an A-10 Thunderbolt, maybe a Fokker Tri-plane, and I dunno... something else. There was a plan in an...
Fixing the Wheels on a Suitcase
มุมมอง 334 หลายเดือนก่อน
Ever get your suitcase back at the airport, only to find the wheels are bent and the suitcase won't stand up anymore? Well, that happened to this little green case. Luckily, the wheels themselves though made of cheap plastic survived. Wood at the bottom of the case had been broken, so NOW it needs a woodworker! That's where I come in, and this is fixed and ready to serve a lon... well, maybe le...

Two Door Display Cabinet in MDF and Walnut #diy #woodworking #cabinet #shopsmith #mdf
มุมมอง 9895 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is not a super difficult project, but it does take some patience, a bit of time-consuming attention to a few details, and definitely a "measure twice, cut once," mentality. You may have seen "MDF" in the title and wanted to breeze right by, but don't be so hasty! I chose MDF for this project because it would be painted, and MDF is perfect for painted projects. It takes the paint extremely ...
Walnut Keepsake Bandsaw Boxes
มุมมอง 6795 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here are some fairly simple Walnut Heart-Shaped Keepsake Boxes that you can make! These are simpler because they are done on the bandsaw even cutting out the interior. I made these out of a glued-up walnut blank, around 5.25 x 5.25 x 3 inches. These come together pretty quickly. Some of the key things to remember: 1. Work safely at the bandsaw! Use push blocks or a pushstick. 2. After your've c...

      PREACHER, I appreciate those comments. This particular box started as blocks of otherwise useless wood, and I just wanted to do something with them. This is what happens... Bandsaw boxes are fun to make, and the designs are endless. The bandsaw is incredibly useful. Get one, make some boxes. Have fun! -- Mike

    I love the plane but I have a question. Why did you make us suffer through watching you sand every piece of excess off the parts but you didn't show the actual cutting and sawing and drilling with near as much insistance??? You even said that drilling for the axel and wheels was an "ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE" but... again you didn't show that part... but you showed us when you sanded the simulated cylinder heads; every grueling one of them. Asking for a friend.

      Sorry about that. Videos aren't one of my strengths, and sometimes it's hard to film the nit-picky things. Those wheels... I would have had to bleep most of it. I appreciate the comments, and I'll use that to make the next one better.

      @MikeDoingMikeThings 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great hearing from you! The book I have is probably 40 years old, and got me started on wooden toys. It is by Norm Marshall. I always tweak the plans a bit nowadays. On this biplane, I added the scallops to the winds and shaped them a bit more, and I canted the top wing forward just a bit. Otherwise, it is basically the plane in this book. If you like this one, I also did a P-40 WARHAWK. I'm making for an A-10 Thunderbolt, and then... maybe a SPITFIRE. Cheers! Mike

    Hi. What a nice job i love it❤ How Can i get the plan of this

    • @MikeDoingMikeThings
      @MikeDoingMikeThings 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had plans that I copied out of a book many years ago, and have been working from a couple of patterns. But, they started with the plans that are the same as these (www.pinterest.com/pin/1127940669165375290/) that I found online. I always change things up a little... and you should too, based on your own style. I cut indents into the trailing edges of the wings, and I staggered the top wing forward a little bit, but otherwise... it's the same as these plans. Best advice, just have fun!

    Excellent!!! It looks great! I wish I could have the parts that you had and assemble it like you did, because I just don’t have woodworking skills or tools. I think that you were correct to paint the Nutcracker before you put it together. I think that’s the way that the Germans do it. And of course they have the best nutcrackers. Anyway, I really enjoyed watching your video. It gave me sone ideas! I might try to buy an unfinished nutcracker and take it apart myself. If I am Lucky I can try to do what you did then! Ha ha, wish me luck with that one! Anyway, merry Christmas!

    • @MikeDoingMikeThings
      @MikeDoingMikeThings 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'd definitely try to paint it before assembly. You can probably get an assembled kit, and I'd try to gently get it apart. It makes a neater job. I used the little bottles of acrylic craft paint that they sell almost everywhere, and the top coated with Krylon "Crystal Clear" Acrylic Gloss spray. Let your imagination run wild, good luck, and have FUN!

    • @MikeDoingMikeThings
      @MikeDoingMikeThings 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Gina, right now time is the challenge for me! I am considering an Etsy store for some of the smaller projects, and a "Nutcraker Kit" would be a cool thing to offer, but I'm afraid I am quite backed up with other projects at the moment. I have seen "paint-your-own" kits at Michael's (Craft Store) and Hobby Lobby around Christmas time, however.

    Hi Michael, beautiful boxes! A couple of notes- When a part of the process fails, it helps us not do the same thing if you show what happened, and the recovery/correction. It may just be me, but I prefer it when I don’t have to wear hearing protection while watching videos. It would be a more pleasant experience if you reduce the volume on those clips. 😏 The pie crust table was amazing!

    • @MikeDoingMikeThings
      @MikeDoingMikeThings 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dian, thanks! On the video, ClipChamp gave me issues on that video for some reason, specifically the volume. Sorry about that. There were a few things that went wrong. If I could post a photo here, I'd explain... maybe I'll do a quick vid? Anyway, without over-complicating things... the pattern was very thin, so I was being extra cautious (not a bad thing). I was using a push block to hold the piece down at the router table (with the pattern bit riding inside the heart), and I think I must have grazed the opposite side of the spinning bit, it caught the work piece, and tore it into a bunch of pieces. In the end, I'm glad I wasn't gripping the piece with my bare hands. 😮 Stick with me... I'll get this video process sorted out. Thanks! Mike

      Hello Cyrille! Thank you for the nice compliment. I have quite a few projects underway, and I'm not really set up to sell these, although I would consider putting one on Etsy (maybe you are familiar with the site?) at some point. I'd have to figure out shipping and all that sort of thing, so I haven't pursued this yet. And of course shipping to France is a whole different challenge. If I do, however, my price would be $75 + shipping. They would either be made of Cherry or Walnut.
