Much as I am a Rootes fan one should never look at old cars with rose tinted glasses. I have driven an Imperial/Pullman similar to this one and were far from easy to drive where as the directly comparable Austin 7 seater Princess of the same period was actually quite nice to drive and had better engine although the bodywork wasn't anything like as solid as the Humber. The alloy head 6 cylinder side valve engine was prone to head gasket failure although the antifreeze of the day was at least partly to blame.
This is the car you have when you want a real car . All mounted on a strong steel chassis, with beautifully crafted coach built panels mounted atop, from a military heritage. This whispering giant with it's four litre straight six motor, was borrowed from the Commer truck of it's day. With an aluminium cylinder head the power was raised from 80 bhp to 100 bhp at 3,400 RPM. Rootes products were blessed with mechanical simplicity. The engines were rugged and reliable, and some owners would not relinquish ownership of such a fine product until death. Top speed was advertised as close to 80 mph, remembering that this motor is a 2 tonne creation in unloaded condition. Interior appointment was to the highest standard and west of England Cloth was standard seat coverings in the passenger cabin. They were great cars, and frequently appointed for royal tours, being manufactured to a very high standard.
Any Pullman or Imperials encountered had pretty basic brown leather interiors. I also was less than impressed with the brakes which were prone to the rears locking.
@@andrewwmacfadyen6958 24 Humbers were prepared for the Royal Tour of King George VI which did not eventuate owing to his death. The fleet was commissioned for use by Queen Elizabeth II going to Australia and new Zealand in 1954. These cars were upholstered in West of England cloth in the passenger section, and leather in the drivers section forward of the glass partition. Humber Imperials were also manufactured alongside the Pullman but without the glass partion, or West of England cloth. Properly maintained, the car would provide impeccable service because it was soundly engineered. Any problem that you encountered through rear brakes locking up was probably due to inadequate maintenance. Agree, brown leather was not the most inspiring of trim.
That would be a Mk III. Manufactured until 1958 by which time that 1940s styling was hopelessly old fashioned.
Had 2 back in the 80s, they were rapid.
A beautiful car. A bit silly to have the spotlights positioned behind the bumper overriders.
Like this guy ,, put all this together with old skool zeal and determination from the bottom up to the top and never lost his roots

I like the full size tyres on it. I live in the country where we get Pot holes in the bitumen, so tyres that only have a thin profile, end up blown as they come into contact with the hard edges of the pot hole which has hard bitumen sides and lip.
I noticed you moved your foot so I don’t have to do right foot braking. How come you do that?

Wow what a car ! Can you believe they still banger race Super Snipes !? LHM 361 was at the Aldershot meeting at the weekend, there is a picture on Flickr of it in 1950 with, another Super Snipe and others.
Loveiy. Had same bike, same year, same colours. Faster than AP50s and fizzers and WAAYYY cooler. Vibrated itself to bits though.
You sure?, I had the Yellow & black Tiger MK 2, Reg No OWA4R, when I remarked, about radical colour and mudguards etc, I was told it was last throw of the UK tigers because they are restricted . All non , post 77 non yellow black tiger s, I e Red/ black are Restricted, this info was told to me by a major Agratti importer
@@jezztech Yep, identical to the one shown here and definitely not restricted. In fact the very reason I bought second hand and not new, because it was pre-restriction.
