Your past 100% defines you... You cannot define yourself your choices define you....
Do you find that belief empowering? Have you led a perfect life completely free of bad decisions? Did you never experience childhood trauma? Do you believe that children who were abused are doomed to live their lives defined by that past, with no hope for happiness? Our external reality is certainly the sum of our choices. However, we have complete freedom to redefine ourselves and make different choices going forward.
To a certain extent yes I agree but you are the total sum of your choices. For instance if you chose to stealing and ending up in jail or prison then there were consequences for your actions and then that ended up changing and shaping who you. Might not be to those extremes but that's just an example
There are consequences to our choices, but we still have the power to redefine ourselves and change going forward. Our reality might take time to catch up, such as if we are serving a sentence for breaking the law. This was actually filmed with childhood trauma in mind, so more about not defining ourselves by what happened to us. But either way, we create a prison for ourselves if we keep carrying the past forward with us.
