Speaking of language acquisition, I agree with Zulf. By way of example, I learnt French starting from my mid-teens, then lived in Belgium and Quebec for years. I thus acquired the language in fast forward. I drank it all in, and loved every second of it. (My friends in Québec often referred to me as an honorary Québécois.). In other words, I was quite fearless, never really worrying what people thought. By contrast, my next door neighbours (in the far north of Australia) are French, but didn't start learning English until they moved to the country 16 years ago. Their accents are VERY French, and they speak quite haltingly in English. When they're around me, they tend to revert back to French. They've even told me they admire my linguistic tenacity, which is a lovely compliment, and also indicative they take fewer risks than I did as a young man.

A great conversation. Much of it reminds me of my interactions with Zana when discussing our own experiences in and out of Slovakia. As a non-Slovak who spent a year there right when the country was formed (1992-93), I came to value Slovakia greatly. This despite a handful of criticisms I levelled at the culture in my memoir describing my experiences teaching English in Prešov. Interestingly, Zana agreed with me, seeing my opinions as a necessary tonic for Slovak culture to grow and prosper. Flash forward to 2024, and I see in Zana an even greater champion for the country and its people. She is partly responsible for my wanting to explore the country further, which I’ve been doing by writing a novel about Slovakia pre- and post-Communism. Thank you, Zana, for all the work you do!
