Great video. Thanks for sharing! I enjoyed listening to your approach, which is identical in some ways and completely opposite in others to mine. IMHO In a live situation you have to listen to the whole kit in context with the other instruments and what the room does to before deciding on what works.

Ok so I’ve done this and it’s great. My issue now is where should the acoustic guitar sit sin the mix. I noticed for this video,it’s sitting in the back of the mix and that’s fine. My church has 2 acoustic and they love hearing them. On the side note, when setting the gain, I noticed that your input level barely went over -30db. People usually suggest that we should set gain to like -18db where the green meets the yellow. What’s the proper procedure? I want guitar presence but not too much if you understand what I mean

Hi, one question, is that a simple reverb? I have the Midas M32.

LOT of kick.. and click.. from the kick ..... also it seems like the whole drum bus is like mashed to death with comp.. so the parallel comp is just comping what's already mashed to death.. its like praise and worship drums with a metal bands kick drum.. also.. the gate attack.. for me.. is NEVER set at zero.. that will introduce clicks and pops. It's just too fast. I like your approach for sure.. but.. stomping the fire outta drums is a really quick way to lose all the tone you gained by tuning them properly. MIC PLACEMENT IS ABSOLUTELY part of the win or lose game in drums.. live or studio.. keep your the good work though!

Just a simple lowcut to 100hz its a easier way too, it adds more clarity

Show, do you use post fader or pre fader reverb?

On this long reverbs i generally use sidechan compression. On the FX send activate compression, as key i use the vocal channel cutted on 1000hz bandpass. Tune the threshold in order to hear clearly the voice ( -3 -12 db of compression ) without reverb and full reverb when no voice play. Tune attack fast, relase time on your feeling. This add clarity to voice

This is a really great run through dude, thanks for sharing. I learnt a few good points here in the gate section with respects to the key frequency, so I'm keen to apply that. On the parallel compression for the drums, I use that and honestly love what it adds to the live sound. I don't use the FX rack units for that though, but rather just the standard compression within the bus. I do EQ as well, which may help what I get out of the exercise, but since using this method it's changed the game for me in a big way. I even setup guitars on a Parallel comp bus to bring in more grunt for them aswell, and in small amounts, it does just that. Im not running a serious PA system in terms of power and all, so I do find that I gotta pull it back a bit and keep on eye on how hard this is all pushing, but I personally enjoy the weight it all brings to the mix. Great video though, thanks for sharing!

Thank you, this was helpful and inspiring. Btw. I would never pan the toms far right and left. That is so unnatural to the audio picture. Q - Would it be an idea to start the mix with having that stereo-sub compression first and then work backwards? Maybe the just might not be that much work for then tweaking every channel that hard.

Great video. I'm having a problem, my xusb playback sounds terrible. Records fine but can't do virtual soundcheck or return to the mixer for service livestream. Keeps crackling, popping and cracking.

I like your thinking on this however I did not wish to burn an effects slot for two Drum Verbs. I think I figured out a way to get relatively similar result by putting the Drum Verb into two unused channels (as insert) with those channels being fed by the Drum Verb buss. Then use expansion on the dynamics page and use the mix and release to tune the tail and the "explosion" of verb. I totally get the explosion verses the tail dilemma (I keep going back and forth between tight verb like Vintage verb, or Plate or Hall verb for the tail for that very reason). The "sacrificed" channels cans be "recaptured" AUX channels, albeit no dynamics on those.

I just got a couple...well the first one had a blown ribbon, super stretched out. And the second was 500 dollars and has a pretty high noise floor and picks up an insane amount of electrical interference. But it sounds really good.

Why not use a DCA?

Or you use both insert comp on both bus or nothing insert on both. Using an insert you are delaying this bus or channel.

Good video. Good mix. I was with you until the overheads. I'm a big fan of using overheads to glue the whole kit together rather than just a glorified cymbal mic. Totally agree on the parallel compression. I generally love doing it but there was some funky phasing going on there, hmm. That's a shame.

Gating and compressing this kick drum seemed unnecessary in this case. Took all the balls out.

When you mention knocking off the initial transient of the snare bottom, you can accomplish this as well by increasing the attack time on the gate. You can get the gate to the point that no transient comes through at all.
