how does the shape builder tool separate the shape? mine only combines
You should hold "alt" or "option" while dragging to separate!😊

Figured it out. It's not the shape builder tool or shaper tool at all, it's the knife tool. You may not see it as there will be an eraser tool showing by default or maybe the scissors tool, but if you right click it, you'll get more tools including the knife. Hope this helps anyone watching this

when i try this it says “this requires a selection of multiple objects. the top object must be a single path or mesh, or a symbol containing a single path or mesh.”
