I was hesitant to publish this video as it is among the earliest train videos I ever shot on 8-mm video tape. It was actually an afterthought, as I had only up until then shot still pictures on my railfan trips. In spite of its shortcomings (lots of camera shake, choppy edits, etc), there is a lot to see here, classic trains from all three major Southern California railroads including an ATSF t...
Setup and Alignment of an AirChime K Horn for Machining on the Sidney Lathe
มุมมอง 121ปีที่แล้ว
This short video shows the setup required prior to remachining an AirChime K horn to spec. The machine used is my 1944 Sidney lathe. First the flange surface must be aligned perpendicular to the lathe axis. This is accomplished by means of a dead blow hammer (Lixie) and a dial indicator to read the wobble as the part is rotated. When that is achieved with minimal runout, the axis of rotation of...
AirChime K horn Machining on the Sidney Lathe

Machining an AirChime K5LA to new specifications. This sequence shows the basic steps to restore proper dimensions . There is enough material to perform the process several times before the horn is beyond wear limits. If it is to be used in “collector service,” remachining will most likely never have to be done again because it will never accumulate enough hours of operation to wear it out agai...

We are treated to a nice top-down view of the train and two units, the relatively rare GP40X, formerly ATSF 3809, the last of ten such units ordered by the Santa Fe Railroad, delivered to the property May 1978. The trailing unit is BNSF 188, GP60, formerly ATSF 402...
Restoration of the Purdue Boilermaker Special VII Nathan P5 Train Horn

The horn as-received was corroded together, and required the removal of 27 broken bolts, corrosion removal, installation of new internal components and hardware. The final result “speaks” for itself, and will restore the claim of, among other things, ...the loudest college mascot! All it needs now is a new coat of shiny black paint and reinstallation so the Boilermaker Special VII can speak aga...

After watching the SP train I can stop watching all other train videos now. Nothing can top that one!
do u know where i can get a wabco aa2?
They show up from time-to-time on eBay, however the prices have been ridiculous lately. You would be better off joining one of the Facebook groups (e. g. "train horn and whistles") and seeing if another collector has one to sell.

Listen to those EMD locomotives growl
Yes! I miss that sound
The crossing today is virtually the same as seen here. Only changes are the bells shown here, which were replaced with electronic ones in 2015. The A Frame “Wishbone” gate arms have also since been replaced. Recently, the closer signal’s far left light was hit by a truck or car and has been MIA. I have recorded this crossing on my channel
Love seeing the blue & yellow still working hard.
This and 1MTSRider are the best sources of this generation of railfanning one can find that isn't the Trona Railway.
Oddly enough a GP40X was the second HO scale Locomotive I ever got. The flared radiators make them look so unique compared to all the other GPs. Great catch!
When these engines were new, a few engineers told me that they were told that these would replace the SD9's. SP bought them really heavy. The first order SD40's were 393,800 lbs. The first order of SD39's were 416,600 lbs and the second order, 5318-5325 were 409,900 lbs., crazy.
Are you taking customers? I have a raised letter k5 that could use your magic..

Thank you for adding this detail, and for taking the time to comment!
Isn't that the kind of horn they put on the Fairbanks Morse h24-66?
I don't have any specific examples of its use however it was commonly used on early first generation diesel switchers so it is quite plausible that it would have been used on the F-M H24-66. The H24-66 also commonly used Nathan chime horns, M3 and M5
I used to work there 1977-2012. Brings back a lot of memories good and bad. Thank you for your video.
Southern Pacific was a huge part of my childhood. My father worked for SP and one of his jobs was to run in front of the train opening 3 trestles .I was able to ride on the engines and a few caboose many times
My friend saw the plume in Superior, Arizona this evening. Superior is over an hour east of Phoenix. The plume in her picture looked exactly like the plume right at the end of your clip. That thing was truckin'! 👍
Very cool, and the timing of the launch relative to sunset was perfect, dark enough sky for contrast with enough sunlight remaining to illuminate the contrail! Thanks for sharing your experience too.
@@b2major9thYes, that was just about perfect. I'm jealous. One of these days I'll get a chance to see a plume...I hope. 😄🤙

Idk how many times, sitting in the newhall tunnel and this train came thru! Yes, it got smokey in there...
Wow! Great footage for the time. I love the SP. The old EMD SD40-2. I grew up with them. I still think the low nose design was the best looking locomotive ever made. GP38’s were a great shorter version with only two-axle trucks. These things dominated the railroads from the 70’s through the early 90’s and this video brought back vivid memories from that time. Thank you. 😊
Thank you, thank you. This is the best audio sound I have heard here on TH-cam of my generation of railfanning. The big 20 cylinder EMD whining/howling, and staccato bark/razor sharp exhaust of the GE combined working together. This was the sound I grew up to in railfanning, late 70s to early, early 90s. One of the best eras of railroading ever, the other was the steam era. Today's boring/lifeless crap can't compare. It was more than sound, even like this video . . . it was feeling it too. This video captures that awesome sound. Thank you again for sharing.
Thank you for your kind words! I worked hard to try to preserve the sight and sound from the original 8-mm analog videotape, before it goes bad and am glad that I was successful in the transition to digital format. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and for stopping by to leave a comment.
I didn’t know Southern Pacific was still going in 1993! Last time I saw one was back in the 80’s! Nice to see this video! I saw them ALL the time as a kid in the 60’s and 70’s! Nice video!
Yes, until the merger with UP killed the SP in 1996. Truly the end of an era - was glad to have grown up with the SP and able to preserve some of the experience in these videos! Thank you for your comment and for watching

A great spot I know well through the years and got UP 1996 and 4014 at the same spot. Cool action on the vid and amazing Gyralite action that late in the game! SP 4801 in this video was one I got photos of many times through the years.
Thank you for your comment and for watching my video. Knowing what I know now I would have shot far more video, rather than just still photos
This turns 33 years old tommorow.
Yes indeed. Was glad to rescue these videos from the closet after 30+ years, before the original tape deteriorated
Best show on earth!!!! Not many things can even come close to this... boy am i glad i witnessed it live at least once... although that was not nearly enough 🤦 I also vividly remember seeing a nearly 120 car loaded coal train with 5 or so six axles on the lead and 5 cut in and 5 bringing up the rear at 3ish Am crawling over the loop too bad that couldn't have been captured on film.
Thank you for your comment and for watching my video. No trip to Tehachapi was complete without catching the loaded cans!
Awesome stuff. Dolores and ICTF almost made sitting in traffic on the 405 tolerable (and the blimp helped too).
Believe me it was like a magnet pulling me off the freeway at Alameda! Thank you for your comment and for watching my video!
Old kodachrome paint job for the failed Santa Fe merger ,i forgot about that
A lot of fans in the day hated the proposed merger that never came to be but in retrospect would have been preferable to what we have now! Thanks for your comment and for taking the time to watch!
Ahh, back when watching trains was actually interesting. Best 7 minutes I have seen in a very long time. Thanks!
Thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment! Knowing what I know now, I would have done far more video than still photography
Wow! Still running? Southern Pacific! I love watching them go through my hometown when I was kid/ teenager! 50 + years ago!
I wish the SP was still in existence. They were taken over by UP in 1996. I am happy I got the video that I did, however just wish I would have done more knowing what I know now. Thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment

Great video. Thanks for preserving early 90's SP history for future railfainners.
Thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment. Should have filmed more from Pepper Avenue - great spot to capture details for model railroading work.
Awesome! Thanks for posting. I used to see this very train 32 years ago when I worked along the Wilmington Subdivision in LA. I used to wonder why all the tank cars were connected the way they were.. I remember telling a UP hump yard employee about this train about 20 years ago and he looked at me like I was crazy. It was only 2 years ago did I learn it was one-of-a-kind train called the Oil Cans.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. The cans were always special trains to me, always a treat to see. Massive power always on display.
Thanks for posting this video. I appreciate the history.

Ah, the pre-graffiti railroading era
Thank you for your comment and for taking the time to watch. I'm happy I was able to preserve these scenes otherwise no one would believe it!
I can fully relate, i used to do this exact same thing as you. Riding switch engines, locals, freights, and even some passenger trains with a friendly engineer who took me on board in the late 90's in Turku, Finland. Best summer vacations i ever spent, i was a kid back then. Got to operate a switcher several times too. Too bad i only had a basic film camera and all the pictures have since been lost.
Very cool, I always enjoyed riding along and only wish I had captured more of my experiences. Most of the time the crews didn't care - there was not really any social media, live streaming, or other avenues where the recording could have gotten back to management. I always asked permission to video tape and only recall one time where a crew member got upset that I was filming. Things have changed now and for the most part I don't think these experiences could be repeated. Thank you for your comment about your experiences, and for taking the time to watch my videos
