Been Thinking about This One For a While
This tree has always been one of my favorite trees. We were hoping that it got zapped by a late hard frost last year and that foliage would come back this year but it didn't. This particular red oak had a very established canopy. Growth rings are absurdly tight together, I counted 120+... It was 3 ft at the stump and straight as an arrow. Saved out three beautiful saw logs, and started to work through processing the fire wood on limbs and upper trunk. No rot on this anywhere. It pays not to wait.
I have been thinking about how I was going to drop this tree, where I was going to put it, risks (near the house, and big heavy limbs), for a long time now, and it feels good to have put it exactly where I wanted it, obliterating an old dead trunk of a target, and having it all cleaned up. Multi part series here, so stay tuned.

Stihl MS462 CM vs Stihl MS661 CM on BIG Hard Wood
มุมมอง 1.3Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Stihl MS462 CM and Stihl 661 CM on BIG ASH. Two powerhouse saws in my arsenal... the stihl 462 cm and stihl 661 cm The 462 is outfitted with a 25" light bar running a yellow chain. Only mod to the saw is west coast saws 3 point felling dogs. 661 (bone stock) is outfitted for the purposes of this video with the same 25" light bar. I usually will run a 36" light bar on this saw for bigger trees a...
The real work begins.. Methodically processing/cleaning up a 90ft Ash tree
มุมมอง 3.2Kหลายเดือนก่อน
The real work begins after the tree is on the ground. Needed to get this old, Ash tree cut up into manageable logs to bring up to the woodpile for bucking and splitting. This tree was very well established and had a very full top, unfortunately it just was completely dead from Ash borer. Not letting any of it go to waste. Mother Nature provides us with everything we need. All the dead branch wo...
90 Foot Dead Ash Tree Leaning Towards Power Lines
มุมมอง 2.8Kหลายเดือนก่อน
This big old ash tree is another victim of emerald ash borer. This was a pretty technical fall with no margin for error. Weight of the tree wants to go towards the road and power lines. With a little coercion, I was able to bang this tree over with wedges. Came up with a good plan and executed it perfectly. Hope you enjoy watching. Using a Stihl 462 CM. #chainsaw #axe #wood #farm #homestead #tr...

How Our Farm Barters Firewood to Save Money
To get below 20% it.needs to be split to expose the neccessary surafce area to shed the excess moisture. Stacking is good, i like 300 gallon metal tote containers bc i can move them w/ the tractor.
Don’t need to stack wood to season. Throw it in pile and it does the same thing
Good to know 🫡
Get you some with some knots in it and guarantee you want do that!!
Got a ton of logs with knots haha, and split around them the wood tells you what it needs. Way faster with an axe than a hydraulic splitter. I'll post some more knot content soon just for you! Thanks for watching
Wish we had red oak on our property. Live oak only, i have buried 6 wedges in a piece that size. Then had to cut them out with the saw. Nasty, stringy, knotty stuff. Its equivalent to Osage Orange/ Bois D'Arc as for density. Cuts best green, splits best seasoned.
I haven't had the opportunity to throw an axe into live oak yet! Sounds like black locust or elm, not very funny with an axe a maul or a sledge with steel splitting wedges either! Thanks for watching!
Good piece of oak for firewood,
What a dog❤ what breed is it?
Assuming you're talking about the big guy. He's a landseer Newfoundland! Thanks for watching
Rain helps dry wood! Sure lol
Chopped the sun down pretty fast.
I just got that axe. Thing is a beast!
Dude I think you're yak is broken it looks to much like a dog
AND THAT IS THE STRAIGHTEST GRAIN I EVER SEEN 👎
Capital letters angry elf huh? Let me know what you'd like to see hand split
@ GUM
And I’m 6’3” hardly a elf
Try a hard maple yard chunk
Will get some on video, have a ton of it.
Dog is pissed.. thats his toy
Straight red oak splits like butter
Im rock hard.
Hey, new subscriber here. I live in northern Maine and do a lot of the same stuff. I don't split too much of my wood because I have an outdoor wood boiler, but that's a nice looking stack of wood you got going there! Keep up the good work!
Hell yeah! Thank you for subscribing and watching our videos. One of these days I'll get an outdoor wood boiler for future shop. Nothing better.. especially when you can put logs in it that will burn for several days.
Awesome tip and video. Keep making more.
You will soon have it undercover.
I was a chimney sweep for over 30 years and always tested my clients firewood
Amazing so spectacular out of this world how did you manage that. You are the new Paul Bunyan
Perfect shot. 👍
to jest good
Good to see you are including your boy early so he sees the importance of it. And can take care of himself later in life. 🫶
Nice job using wedges, slow and steady.
Thank you my friend, always good to be on safe side and patient. I see too many people not working the tree methodically. You probably noticed I had multiple thicknesses of wedges going as I made progress on getting the top over. Thank you for watching!
Good form, good tool and patience will get you a lot done
Good to see a natural swing Best ive seen Thanks for sharing
Hugely helpful Thanks
I'm glad it helped! Appreciate you watching, will keep the videos coming with more helpful tips. Coming soon is one on moisture meters and different species of trees and dry times.
DUUUUUDE!!😮
Sounds like a pine Beatle they do the same thing.
Admiral akbar?
Nice video! You go about splitting wood the right way (or at least 90% the way I do it). I love that you aren’t going 100% on ANY swing, and are efficient in keeping the wood together for you a tad while splitting so you don’t have pick up rounds again. The GB is a wonderful axe that did an excellent job at splitting and not getting stuck. Try a piece with a knot in it next time to show us what the axe can really do 😉 I think the only thing I’d do differently is start splitting slabs off the outside, creating a “square” (I’ve always called it “squaring the round”) and then working my way inwards. This works especially well on larger woods. Sadly, our ash here in Western PA has been dead due to the EAB for so long even the trees that haven fallen, of which there are few, are not worth the time for firewood. You’ve got my subscription 👍
Ash borer from China. 🇨🇳
Wow
Fact: Splitting mauls are designed to bust wood apart with very little penetration, so they're less likely to get stuck in the wood.
just like on fortnite
Keep hitting it don’t waste time picking it up. Great work 👍.
Good work. Productive work at that!!💪🏽✊🏼🤙🏼
Try splitting mesquite 👍🏻👍🏻
I'll show you some stuff harder to split than mesquite. Stay tuned! Thanks for watching
Love splitting kiln dried logs
That’s poplar
Hahaha no sir it's actually Ash. Poplar is fun to split, makes good kindling, but crappy firewood compared to the other species we have around here. White and red oak, black birch, hickory, ash, beech, hard maple etc. Thank you for watching!
I actually have a big poplar I'm taking down soon. I'll record splitting it for you
Look at the bark and the color of the wood.
Sick video dude! What axe are you using?
Thank you! This is a gransfors bruk large splitting axe, with a 28" handle. It is a beast and has split a few hundred cords without anything other than a sharpening and a little boiled linseed oil. Appreciate you watching!
Good job!
Send the lumber to my house 🏠 For furniture ❤yes
It is great that you knew just what to do !
Chickens are the dumbest animals when you need them to be smart, and the craftiest when you need to catch em :)
Wish you were closer - we have so many trees that need to be cut down - too close to the house . My husband does cut a lot of them but sometimes hires someone to cut the extremely tall ones . You cut trees down so expertly !
Another job so well done ! A little story about hay - your Great Great Grandmother Mary Isabelle told me to make a wish when I saw a truckload of hay ! The method was to wet a thumb , put it in the middle of other hand , make the silent wish , close the hand and stamp down the wish ! Cute !
I see a little of Buckin Billy Ray in those swings
I love the detailed explanation. I can see this channel growing a whole lot.
Thank you for watching, we are going to keep the content coming!
