👍👍 worked perfectly got heater back working
the 1% i finally found yall. thank god im not the only one
Great video, seems easy enough to follow. My first Navien system had to be replaced because no one told me I needed to flush it when I bought that house. My next house had a Navien system as well that the previous owners had to replace because THEY never knew to flush. I had local plumber out to flush the system once and think now i can do it myself. Thanks again for this great video
Thank you so much for making this video! You make it very easy to understand!
At 2:56 you are kinda right but the hydrojet keeps the tank cleaner durning everyday use, it is not keeping the tank cleaner because you drained the tank and turned the water on.
Ah, so that plug seen in the background is *not* for the anode rod. Next question: what length to buy.
Nice. For my RUR98i Rinnai recommends a 4GPM pump and about 4 Gal of vinegar. I think there's a lot of play with the numbers because the system is designed for about 19GPM of hot water flow. Main thing is to read the manual and not worry too much. But do this for at least an hour every six months if you have hard water. Can use diluted Muriatic acid instead of vinegar
Hey Ray - Great video. thank you. you seem to be an expert on the Rennai heaters. I have the same one in your video (i120) but the household water is locked at 120 degrees. Do you happen to know what the unlock code/process is to increase the celing temp above 120 degrees? Thanks in advance Ray!!
Excellent video. I have put off the descaling process too long on my Navien Tankless Water Heater due to being unsure with the process. But I did the cleaning process one step at a time and I'm giving a comment right now as I wait my 45 minutes for the vinegar to flush through. Thanks for the awesome video. 👴
I called Navien and explained that I have a NCB-240 and asked about my warranty and suggested service. They advised that both the closed loop heating side as well as domestic hot water side should be cleaned every 1 to 2 years with a biodegradable, potable safe product such as floaide, fernox, hercules: haymaker. White distilled vinegar can be used as a backup but typically does not have the high acidic levels needed for a thorough cleaning. I also asked if flushing the system with said products would void the warranty and was advised it will not and was in fact recommended by the manufacturer to keep both the closed loop side and domestic side of the heat exchanger clear and operating correctly.
great video thanks
Awesome video…..I followed it step by step and got my navian back up and running!!
It would’ve been nice to see when you were running the vinegar through the system and the water after to see how everything operates while it’s happening
Thank you so much for making this video!!! SO helpful!
This is the best Video I ever seen for a few reason first of all Ray is totally professional knows what is is doing secondly easy to follow his directions very clear 3rd this is saving everyone with a Navien hundreds of dollars I just serviced mine and everything was easy and worked out fine Thank You to Ray for making this Video
I've watched over 15 videos on how to flush my Navien Combi tankless water heater. This video is by far the best in detailing exactly how to do it with very helpful detailed videography and a clear, articulate and specific explanation of the process and it's only an 11 minute video. Ordered my flushing kit from Amazon for $75. Took my IPAD to my mechanical room to have the video on in case of questions, and completed the flush of my Navien with no issues. EZ PZ. Ray is a rock star.
If i may ask a question so is the aluminum being in theory melted and set into the water that goes out into my shower for example? These reason i ask is that will that is not the ideal metal to be in contact with the skin special with a hot shower were you skin absorption doubles.
Why do the red and blue hoses switch magically?
Very good video
These are two salesmen trying to sale you junk and he used the word extrapolate lol and she says it will heat and cool your home lol. Your best bet is to buy a gas water heater these are extremely high maintenance.
I’m Steering, NO I’m Steering, Nuh Uh I’m steering, I was here first, nuh uh I was, nooooooo I WAS! Ahhhhhhhhhhh
I thought you had to open a pressure relief valve? If there is no water input open, how will the pressure be regulated?
I have a Navien combi-boiler. Any extra steps? Should I flush the water lines? If so, what are the proper steps?
You mention that the way these tanks are plumbed as being in tandem ---- I think you mean in parallel. Tandem means one behind (or after) the other, or in series. Great informative video --- thank you.
You look like you could be related to Sylvester Stallone. Do with that observation what you wiil.
Very detailed step by step. My water heater won't drain with the in-water turned off. It flows fine once I turn the in-water on. Any clue on why? I'm considering taking off the in-pipe to the heater to allow air in. I opened several faucets, but it made no difference.
Great video. Thank you so much for posting. I do have one question, do you ever turn off the hot water out valve during the process or does that stay open the whole time?
Saw a different video that showed having the unit running so the hot water was coming out then popping the breaker. They said that for the best cleaning the exchanger needed to be in an active mode. Curious if there is any merit? Personally I love the simplicity of this tutorial, but as an uneducated plumber was asking your professional thoughts. Thanks in advance and really appreciate your efforts for us plumbing novices.
I do this service myself every year but didn't know about removing the condensate dirt trap and cleaning it out. When I removed the clip on mine and removed this cap, out poured about a pint or less of water (condensate) which very much surprised me! I did this in the winter and should have expected some water to be present I guess. This is NOT in the operations manual to do this, so I'm glad it is in this video. I descaled mine for one hour using Hercules Haymaker descaler solution (citrus based) rather than vinegar as vinegar just smells way too strong to me (even though it would be much cheaper). One thing I did was to run the heater before servicing it to get it hot as well as use hot water when mixing in the Haymaker descaler solution (1 QT to 1Gal of hot water). YMMV.

great video thank you very much. Very helpful !
Thank you so much!
Should you turn of the gas valve running to the digital meter on off when you are draining the heater?
This video is an absolute gem, thank you! If anyone has a tankless with a recirculation system, you’ll need to close the valve on the recirculation loop before opening the service valves to drain the heater.
Hi! What does it mean when the light flashes red?
Excellent video much appreciated
Hi - I need to flush my Navien tankless unit out and have watched a couple of videos. Cleaned the filters and got ready for the flush but I noticed that my service valves are below my my supply valves. So if I shut my supply valves and hook up hoses to the service valves no water will enter the unit. Did my plumber plumb this wrong and is it ok to leave the supply valves open to flush the unit or do I need to get it re-plumbed? I do have a cold water inlet valet on the main line and another cold water supply valve for what it is worth.
Thanks, Ray! I printed off some instructions elsewhere but your video included a couple of steps that those did not. BTW, I have an Aerotherm so your instructions should work. 🤞🤞🤞
Just got a tankless and wanted to learn the process…. great job great explanation! Thank you
Yesterday I started to do the annual Rinnai Maintenance flush. The exit water (Hot Side) port stopped flowing. I unplugged the Circulating Pump, plugged it back in, and the exit flow started for a brief time, then stopped. The Circulating Pump is OK, I checked it to be sure it was working properly. With the Unit turned back on, we are getting a Hot Water (supply) flow as expected? Any Thoughts?
I just had someone install a Bradford White for me. They didn't put unions in. They used all crimped/pressed connections. When I questioned them about it, they told me it was their practice to use the pressed or crimped connections and not install unions. What do you think about that?
Do you need to turn the system off?
This video has been very, very helpful to me for doing the descaling and other cleaning. One thing that is not in the video and I forgot to do myself during my last cleaning is to clean the recirculating inlet filter in addition to the cold water intake filter. (This is only needed if your system is designed and set up for automatic recirculation.) My last cleaning I forgot to do this and the cleaning didn't fix my recirculation problem. (It wasn't working due to shutting off because of the buildup in the recirculation inlet filter.) I just figured this out, cleaned it, and the recirculation is working again!
Can you show how you pump the water out? No floor drains in my basement.
My house sat for 2 years, and my hot water has been milky since the day I moved in 4 years ago. My kitchen sink doesn't even look clean when I clean it. It looks chalky. Also, because the water smelled like sulfur, I had to install some sort of iron-breaker sulfur system to remove the smell before I moved in. I'm trying to figure out what material anode rod I should purchase that will take care of both problems. I see anode rods come in a variety of materials. Magnesium, aluminum, titanium...
Great video! What size pump are you using?
Does the combustion chamber need to be cleaned? I can't see in my inspection glass, it's blackened
What powers that electrical box? My pilot light went out, but there's no light flashing on the box and I can't figure out where the power would be coming from.
Top notch video. Thanks for sharing this and to know there are still quality technicians out there that aren’t afraid to share there knowledge to the homeowner after making that purchase on a product.
With this configuration, is it ok to shut off one hot water heater and run on only one while keeping the shut-off hot water in place? The reason why I am asking is in the event one of the hot heaters starts leaking. Would like to simply turn off the leaking hot water heater and run on only one.....? Thanks.
