My first job was detailing at Steinborner Holden in the 90s. My mum worked for the clothing factory in the same building in the 70s as her first job and my grandparents met while working there in the 50s as their first job. Steinborner was a fantastic guy to work for and he never forgets details, memory of an elephant they say!

15:00 shows a fruiterer called alfred Dawe with son Alf, ...my Nan is Gene Dawe and she had a brother Alf Dawe! Is there any chance I could get a date of this photograph? I know my great grandmother lived on near cnr of Cameron and Queen and I think Uncle Alf lived in the old Bakery on the actual corner.

@@gawlerhistoryteam8355 I spoke to my nanna about the photo, she told me her dad Alfred would take the horses and cart for days at a time into Adelaide (I assume the athelstone market gardens) to buy produce to return to Gawler to sell. Little Alf in the photo was notorious for stowing away in the cart so he could go to town with his dad. They lived at 32 Murray St opposite the baptist Church what is now Steinborners car yard (my first boss) there was a granny flat out back that fronted onto high st. They were a family of FOURTEEN children. Alfred later bought a plumbing business which Alf jr took over until he retired. Alf jr died in 1995.

Really interesting..I have so many connections with Gawler - My GG Grandfather, John Harvey, delivered the mail between Adelaide and Gawler in the 1840's. My father showed Jersey cattle at many a Gawler Agricultural Show and I went to High School there in the late 50's early 60's.

Hi Nicolas This is Graham Brookman responding You are correct that Australia has some of the World's most interesting food plants (and animals). Australian Native Produce Industries (ANPI) made a serious effort to collect and select native food plants for mainstream growing in the 1990s and other individuals and groups have tried to commercialise specific species. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_bushfood_industry The Macadamia is the big success story and kangaroo meat is eaten widely in Aust. At The Food Forest we have trialled over 20 species and whilst we are good at growing native nettles, Warrigal Greens, macadamia, quandong, wattle (acacia spp) , developing a steady, viable market is hard. The federal Government has been pitiful in terms of commitment to horticultural research and development...until a success story emerges from private success. Then the government tends to support a few large, key growers with development grants. At The Food Forest we can throw together a meal featuring native foods for ourselves any time....maybe that is how it was meant to be?? cheers graham

I fell in love with Australian flora (and everything else too) while living there for a couple of years from 2011 to 2014. I loved learning about bush tucker, and once back in France, tried to grow some myself, like kangaroo apple, Tasmanian pepper or wombat apple. I just wished Australia tried harder to cultivate bush tucker, because there is some absolutely stunning food out there in the bush... Just those tiny bush tomatoes were the best tomatoes I've ever had.
