    Oh boy! I did the exact same thing this year try to mow the section above my home. Kept getting stuck and hit the fence post a couple times on the triangular piece

    I cut a lot of alfalfa with a 501 mower in Montana. It was designed to tear itself apart, but we kept it going.

    Nice machine wood tailboard always worked the best at flipping over hay on end so you could see for next pass

    If you plan your turns right and get good at it you don't have to stop and backup at ends , just turn sharply at ends and sickle bar simply slides around and you start other direction, my dear old dad showed me that

    I bought a 501 in OK shape and another for parts.... Your video has helped me answer a few questions on mounting on the Ford 8N and also inspired me to clean mine up this winter. Thanks for sharing!

    When I'm attaching it to the tractor I just don't connect the drive shaft to the PTO until I have lifted it with the three point hitch. I hung a loop of light chain around the spring to hold the driveline up and out of the way. When I'm done mowing I do the same in reverse - lift the mower up and quickly disengage the PTO, then pull the driveline off of the PTO. If I don't and leave it overnight it drifts down and then I can't lift it with the cutter bar raised. Hope this helps.

    Hi, I have the same set up, I was wondering how you transport the 501 with the sickle in the up position on your 8N without the rest of the mower dragging on the ground? I know you shouldn't engage the pto with the sickle bar up, but then you loose the use of the hydraulics, any suggestions?

  • @gregb9510
    @gregb9510 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's a 1952 8N, so no two stage clutch nor live pto/3 point hydraulics. Live pto came in 1953 with the NAA. Two stage clutches in the mid 1950's with the model 600/700 series. It would make that mowing job easier if it did have those features.

  • @countryboyYERT

    Always idle down before starting the pto, you'll fer sure warp something eventually, and those tractors have a two stage clutch which means you can stop the tractor without stopping the mower, save some wear and tear

      8n's do not have a two stage clutch

      @@dawntrout5258 Neither does my 55' 800, sucks when mowing with the Razor back style mower... Pushes me further because the mower has to wind down.
