Tom Woodward Videos
New Zealand
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 31 ส.ค. 2013
My name is Tom. For 14 years I explored the globe living out of a backpack. I picked up a GoPro while I was in the Australian mines and became hooked on making videos, soon this hobby spiralled out of control.
This channel chronicles my journey from a travelling misfit with years' worth of nights logged in dingy hostels, to a full-time family man and working stiff.
I try to create videos that show viewers interesting parts of the world and provide a window onto the journeys that have shaped my life. Whether rafting down Amazon, traversing the South Island mountains, or showing up-close perspectives of the industries I've worked in and jobs I've worked on.

The Aurora Australis Viewpoint I Wish I'd Found Sooner
The best place in Queenstown to see the Aurora Australis is Aurora Point. It is possibly one of the best spots in the world to see the Southern Lights because of its accessibility and it's far southern latitude of 45 degree south.
At the end of a short road sits a large rock with a pristine view south over the lake. The view is unobstructed by lights and has a large field of view because of its elevated position.

I Found Bones In This Cave In The Forest

In middle of the primeval rainforest, was an entrance to an unknown underworld below. We set off down into the bowels of the earth. The deeper we went underground, the stranger the rock formations we encountered. Eventually, in the depths of the cave we reached huge subterranean cavern. Extensive stalactites hung from the ceiling, stalagmites and columns rose up from the floor and pools with cr...

Hey brother. I am doing FIFO out new zealand, gets tough . Wanting to get Home in a couple years. Looks like they struck gold big around Bendigo and cromwell called the Bendigo-Ophir Project. Anyway you didn't take the ocean gold job. Why is that and what you doing now ? Fifo again?
Yeah the Bendigo project looks good. I've been up there to check it out and saw Sanata Minerals drilling. It's right next to an old ghost town where they were mining gold back in the old days. There's definitely good seams under that ground. The only reason I didn't take the job at Macraes is because it was too much of a drive in from Queenstown. Kind of wish I had taken it now. Doing a boring 9 to 5 desk job in IT in town now.
@TomWoodwardVideos ah well brother hang in there. Ders gold up in dem hills real close to you. Might cross paths with you sometime. Definitely mine and my families plan to move to the sputh island around that area so I don't need to fifo any longer. Peace ✌️
@@Thoarsy Good plan. Once this mine goes ahead there will be a lot more options. Long way to FIFO from NZ to WA. When I was working FIFO I figured you may as well just live in the place you go to on holiday. Miss the money though. Good luck in your move back 🤙
@TomWoodwardVideos very long way but it's manageable. Thanks brother.
Thats a bloddy great idea ..
I don't think the farmers will be impressed with you damaging their little dams.
The rice farmers were stoked. They came out watching then wanted selfies afterwards. Already asked permission before I did it.
This looks cool man 🔥
Bro. Ever thinking of the environment?
Yes, it’s a good environment for mining because nothing is lost by doing it in that desert.
Shouldn't be there, it's not a zoo up there 29 men died and are still in there, disgusting
Shut up. The families are stoked. Read the comments under the other video.
Huge banger
looks stressful
Did u get paid near the same as Australia?
Probably 30% less but it’s not FIFO so plenty of guys would take a pay cut just for that.
I worked in mining, oil/gas and electricity network utilites. In mining I've done Ok Tedi PNG, Twin Creeks Nevada USA, Boddington WA, Tanami NT, heaps of Qld coal mines and Curragh gold, Batu Hijau Sumbawa Indonesia. In oil and gas I've done BPCL Kochi India, Sinopec Guangzhou China, Mobil/Exxon Houston Texas USA, Oil Search PNG, Brunei Oil Company Brunei. In electrical Utilities Powercor/Citipower Victoria, TEPCO Tokyo Japan. Retired 6 years now.
I did it the other way around, FIFO from Brisbane to Batu Hijau Copper/Gold mine on Sumbawa (Nusa Tengarra West) east of Lombok. Would commute from Brisbane to Bali via Virgin then via Lombok then onto Sumbawa via 12 seater seaplane landing on the water at the bay where the Ore Port Terminal was.
That sounds like a sick project
@@TomWoodwardVideos it was. I'd fly in a day earlier each roster to Kuta, do some family shopping, then head off the next morning. On Sumbawa I stayed in a surfers resort instead of camp. There was a camp but moreso for workers from other islands but there was a whole town built for the mine with a 9 hole golf course too. Like the old days. So some people were FIFO, a lot of expats lived in town on the island and would commute to Bali on their time off.
@@TomWoodwardVideos the stories I could tell...lol
That’s all I did with that video. Just told my story. Fortunately had enough old GoPro footage to put on top of it.
@@TomWoodwardVideos yup, and I loved hearing and seeing it.
business class flights🤔🤔🤔
Yes, explained in the video if you listened to the commentary.
@TomWoodwardVideos my bad, I commented at the start of the video. it soon unravelled.
@colonel_carlito 😂👍
Mine workers have a very poor reputation mix that with being a tourist in bàli kinda screams sex tourist creep the only reason you work in a mine here in Australia is because you can't get a job anywhere else a lot of former school teachers that can't be near kids anymore and crack heads straight out of rehab strippers that can't grab the pole dancing pole one thing that they all have in common they did a course to operate machinery and have the dexterity of a retarded baby giraffe in any machine yeah probably a good thing he she what ever flops over to indo they can have them
So Good ,visuals, music all of it, the cook islands look Otherworldly 😍🏝🏝🏝🏝 trying to figure out how to how to do the bali life without the fifo😂😂😂😂 maybe remote prospecting who knows😂 cheers for sharing and the inspiration, big Kia Ora from northland 🇳🇿🤙🏝🍺🌏👑
Cheers dude, I've been trying to figure out the same thing. Need remote digital nomad work. Just working out what route to go down to get it is the hard part.
@TomWoodwardVideos not wrong there mate, that digital nomadic life does look appealing 🏝🏝my brother made a viral V.R game online and lives in Japan the power of the computer for sure, cheers ,,,, i like the mine vid mate as im from a mining family from waihi, the old man was underground and the old lady took core samples on a drilling rig,,✌️
@shanefraser7764 nice. I worked for OceanaGold down at Macraes for a bit.
FIFO is hard work. I think I'll quit after 1 day during the months of Summer.
That was some awesome video. I also got some amazing photos on the 11th Oct here in Victoria. I had views to the SW around to the SE, it was awesome. I am thinking about putting then into a time laps. What size lens did you have?
Cheers, it was just a Sony e-mount 24mm f2.8. Would have liked something more wide angle but didn’t need the low f point because it was so bright in the 2 main shows. Will keep and eye out for your time lapses 🤙
@@TomWoodwardVideos I have an 18mm x 50mm @2.8 Sigma and the Aurora filled up the whole screen and then some. I have my eye on a 10-20 3.5 lens, I have been playing around with 3.5 on the 18mm and it appears to be okay at pics of the Aurora's, seeing that they are usually fairly bright, so I am thinking that the 10-20 may be okay. It's a work in progress like the time laps, I will have to do a lot more home work on how to put it together.
@@newbee1016 I’ve got a sigma 30mm f1.4. I brought it up and tried to use it for the Aurora but found it was too zoomed in. I only have a crop sensor on the Sony A6300 though so that makes it worse. About the time lapses a lot of the cameras come with built in software for it. I tend to just take lots of photos though and use a free app in the Mac App Store to put it together into a clip.
@@TomWoodwardVideos Yeah the Samsung S23 Ultra has hyperlapse built in so I am going to have a play with that one night before an Aurora is here to see how it works. There are videos on it so I will study them up.
I work in the Waihi OceanaGold op, this vid explains mining in NZ perfectly. Chill and close to home without ridiculous safety procedures. Wont get paid as much as Oz, but the benefits are worth it
Looks like the work in the mines is well worth it if you can live like that.
Hey @warrenmiller this is right up your alley!!
Looks awesome Tom, great footage. I'm gutted i missed the big one this year but hadn't realized there was just another a couple weeks ago! Where can you check to get notified when they are coming here in NZ please? Thanks I'm in the top of the south. Regards Tim.
Just search Aurora Forcast into the Playstore or Appstore on your phone. That will show up a bunch of apps for prediciting the aurora. Apparently we're in a high solar activity phase for the next year or two so there should be more chances to see it. Pretty cool seeing it in Nelson, it's rare that far north.
We had the red up in Nelson. Fantastic!
Nice. I thought it was cool when I was marvelling at the red straight above us to get photos in real time from Nelson showing that they could see it on the horizon.
oh man this looks sooo beautiful
Cheers dude 🤙
That's awesome of you to share the location so others could find it! I remember many a night living in Queenstown trying to figure out where I should go to watch the aurora, but I thought that hill was a construction site at the time. Wish I was still there!
Thanks for the comment 🤙🤙
An uprooted consumerist lifestyle that doesn't care for one's future. An ideal for everyone!
Whinge whinge
Awesome video mate
Insane, that kinda lifestyle is impossible working in the U.S., oilfield and offshore used to be similar in schedule but now if you take a second off you’re replaced and looking for a new job
Yeah it changed a lot when I was there. The mining boom ended and suddenly there was more workers than work.
Living the dream mate👌 work hard play hard and live life to the fullest.. amazing life
Just discovered this video, @TomWoodwardVideos I have sent you an email regarding joining this field. Could you please check your email inbox? The subject is "FIFO enquiry"
This is seriously the best video I think I've ever watched. Each different segment is just mindblowing!
Wow! Cheers, thanks very much
What's a good starting point to get into mining? Do I need to get qualified or is there on the job training?
Get a drivers license, forklift license, working at heights and confined spaces. That’s a good starting point.
PAID BY CHINESE MONEY
😂
Great video. I think NZ has a better grip on reality when it comes to mining vs aussie
nice video! after 20 years boring life in NZ i finally decided to have a change. maybe head to aus to be a fifo driver in the mine for a change
Don't Tell Mum I Work on the Rigs: She Thinks I'm a Piano Player in a Whorehouse - great book - Paul Carter. Some of the best 18yrs of my life and some of the lowest. Nice video.
Stop bitching. Your schedule aint that bad you make good. and if you hate the dust wear a respirator.. and if you still dont like it quit.
like how he's got more safety gear at work then for leisure.
Yeah the safety in the mines is ridiculous
Watching this as a uk scaff ready to come out and try it!!
Hey man, I would love to work this job. DO you need a PR or TR for this?
What are they? And no.
@@TomWoodwardVideos it means permanent residency and temporary residency. Also can you please guide me on how do I find a job in mines, I want to work.
I’m making a video about that now. Just wait a few weeks for it to come out.
@@TomWoodwardVideos Thanks a lot mate, appreciate that !
Defs only need an RT, SA, LN, IP, and AP except on Wednesday when you also need an SE and WD between the hours of 5 and 7. Oh and be sure to get a YT, HG and SW as well. And probs a TR now that I think of it. LOL
I’ve heard people mention Bali but never felt like looking into it, now I’m considering traveling there. You have a ways of putting things together. It’s entertaining.
Great video, I love the contrast of the exhausting mundane imprisonment of the mines with the refreshing freedom of travel and beauty of nature. What was the typical work schedule like, one week on one week off or two weeks on and two weeks off? Here in Texas lots of guys work in the oilfields and off shore rigs and do two weeks on two weeks off. Keep up the great work and living life to the fullest, Cheers!
Thanks 🤙 It was closer to 2 weeks on 2 weeks off but wasn’t fixed. I told them when I was available so I took more time off.
Video is fucking sick!!!!! Big ups to you bro! Love people doing shit with their life. Would the goal ever for this to be full time so you dont have to go to the mines or do you like working there?
The goal would be to be able to live I Bali full time. I got over the mines.
Hmmm your content is really good I feel like if you had the right guidance from someone doing big numbers you could blow up very easily, it just comes down to content and editing.
Cheers dude. This video has done quite well. It sat there for a year getting 5 views per day then suddenly the algorithm picked it up and it’s gets a few hundred everyday now
Very good videos and editing for such a small channel, keep it up
This life style gets old fast, mining is cyclical too, just things to be aware of. On swing you work soo many hours lol thats why you deserve that time off
why bother? Bali is such an OVER rated shit hole...
😮😮😮🎉
How much you saved my mate work for 5 years nothing to his name but a ss commardor
sign me up for the next build, epic adventure
The partying would scare me. Drop your guard for 2 seconds while youre drunk, smoke a joint and fail a drug test. It's all over in a flash.
Ah fuck the 9 to 5 work. I'm a electical engineer for heavy duty machinery based in germany. Do they need FIFO Engineers?
Yeah probably. You need a visa first though
