15 Big Box Retailers Facing A Financial Collapse Right Now
2024 has witnessed some of the most significant bankruptcies since the onset of the retail apocalypse in 2017.
This year, the number of store closures has exceeded levels seen only during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The retail sector is grappling with profound systemic challenges as consumer behavior evolves with the rise of e-commerce and persistent inflationary pressures.
While online retailers continue to thrive, many traditional brick-and-mortar brands are facing financial turmoil.
Unlike their online counterparts, which have leaner operational costs, big-box retailers are burdened by rising real estate expenses, higher wages, soaring energy bills, labor shortages, growing debt, declining foot traffic, and sluggish sales.
In a bid to stay afloat, numerous companies are making tough decisions, including layoffs, store closures, and leadership changes. For some, bankruptcy remains the only viable option.

Sounds about right, tariffs are ultimately passed onto the consumer. At least Best Buy is coming out, other retailers will just slowly raise the prices and once people start complaining they will mention something

Where I live in Michigan, years ago Kroger closed all their small neighborhood stores and put them all into one big Krogers... The options are great there but it's grown extremely busy and alot of criminals started going there the past two years and crime has gone up horribly . It's actually depressing to go there. I think some of the options have dwindled down there as well and although theyre still good, it's not worth the stress of rude, criminal people.

I do contract work for a Kroger food processing plant. They are some of the most inefficient, out of touch management I've ever seen. Rather than evaluating a problem in order to prevent and improve upon it, they simply burden their labor force with the extra load and just focus on getting through the day. Their turnover rate is very high and they have too much pride to do exit interviews in order to see if there's a trending problem they could address.

So Kroger and Albertsons combined are 16% of the grocery market (and according to the government would be a monopoly which is why they couldn’t merge), and yet Walmart is 22% - but totally fine and not a monopoly? Hahaha am I missing something

What these businesses do not understand is that the more profits they make and hold onto, the less money that the working class has to spend at their stores. Trickle down economics has always been the force behind the shrinkage of the middle class. Without the middle class, most of the businesses in the nation will shut down. America is quickly becoming the leader in working homeless. And with this new group thats coming in... its literally going to be the haves vs the have nots.... If you aint in the millionaire club, you are a have not. We just put a while bunch of folks in charge that have the opposite of our best interests in mind... Lots of cuts, de-regulations, higher big business profits and more working homeless..... But this is what the country asked for by voting based on hate...

It's happening in a lot of the mid-sized groceries chains as well. Here in Iowa, it's clear that Hy-Vee has been having money issues. A few years ago they laid off a considerable number of office personal at their corp HQ, then this year they choose not to continue sponsoring the 'Hy-Vee Hall' downtown, and instead, are going to support a local sprots complex (it's a lot cheaper to support each year). Unlike the supplies, whom keep increasing prices, the stores are hard pressed to do the same. Oh, they do, but they're also seeing those price increases eating away at their profit margins. It's a vicious cycle.
