First playthrough, I have Castti as my starting Traveler and picked Mahina when Reflecting on Ch1 for Ochette. Between either doing a second playthrough with Ochette as my starting Traveler with Akala as companion, or just watching some online compilation of Ochette's cutscenes with Akala

I chose Akala

best technique is destroy their shield with blader or range then nuke it with osvald

I chose Akala first on my main save file because it was the one chosen for the trailer of the game

English voices suck this game is 10x better in original Japanese dub Akala sounds like some nerdy hick but in the Japanese version he sounds like a actual grown wise intelligent beast

Mahina sounds like the same voice actress so the fox is better if you don't wanna get confused when they talk

I chose Mahina as I figured later in the game where it gets tougher, I find knowing an elemental weakness is more valuable and I waste less valuable resources trying to find the weakness. And I adore her little voice with Ochette’s story. And her elemental attacks and shield breaks have been worthwhile for me, although I’m only really midgame, around everyone’s 3-4 chapters. So far I have 0 regrets.

Honestly the best video on the subject I've seen. Explains and SHOWS the differences, including voice sounds. Still can't decide tho 😂 Edit: one thing not mentioned, the A.I. On break, Akala will always attack the foe that is broken and Mahina will always strike the foe that's not broken, unless all enemies are broken. This makes wanna go with Mahina instead

Ok. I just missed a Cait with Akala so it's not true that his hits can't be evaded. -.- Mahina actually can hit caits because she deals elemental damage. It doesn't matter at all in later combats as you get way better beasts quickly, so just pick whichever you like most, based on personality and animations, as they will always be visible when you have ochette in party.
