A Seed of a Dream: Morris Isaacson High School and the Struggle for Education in Soweto, 1956-2012
มุมมอง 80หลายเดือนก่อน
Morris Isaacson High School (MIHS) is widely known as the epicenter of the 1976 Soweto uprising. However, its legacy extends far beyond this event. This insightful book explores the rich, untold story of the school, revealing its profound impact on secondary education in Soweto. While the 1976 uprising cemented MIHS’s place in history, Clive Glaser argues that its true significance lies in the ...

The occurrence of sexual reproduction in all living forms suggests that sex should be one of the evolutionary most stable pillars of life. But already Darwin pointed out that the effects of sexual selection can lead to swift evolution and extreme phenotypes, such as the famous peacock’s tail. In this lecture, STIAS Fellow Diethard Tautz discusses how evolutionary biologists still struggle with ...

Disappointment, disenchantment and disavowal have become, in many ways, the affective dominant that charges the present-day. Narrativized fantasies around which we have tended to organize our social, aesthetic and political feelings of collectivity have been pervasively disrupted, leaving little in the way of stable ground on which to establish a shared sense of belonging. In this lecture, STIA...

In the old days, science gave hope. Newton taught that letting go of an apple would cause it to fall downward, not sideways. That a chicken breeding her egg will give rise to a chicken and not a cow, is another such certainty, this time offered by Biology. But then, Heisenberg tore up the certainty with his fundamental trade-off: one cannot know velocity and position at the same time. And moder...

Stellenboch is making a big mistake by inviting such a layman with the false title profess... Please invite a real professor.
The worst history writer ever! He wrote a completely wrong history of Ethiopia by discriminating ethnicities and falsifying Ethiopian cultures, languages and history. His writings have no evidence than few religious and tribal words of mouth. His teachings in Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia was biased full of one ethinic identity hegemony. All in all, he does't deserve to work in your University. Really unethical and under educated person. He only had papers given by his relatives through nepotism.

Your pride and your title went over your head all these years your name as a historian is fake when true history is buried and false history prevail
While Ethiopian history is trumped you kept your mouth shut you consider your self professional historian alas
Cogratulations!
Fantastic Stuff Linda!! Bravvissima
Being ostracized from my family aged 16, it was clear then that I was not going to score well as a potential farther. This dramatically altered my goals & interests.
note:- This did not effect my sexuality, I am still heterosexual.
I am now 51, & have invested most of my effort into learning. I am useless at finding a partner. For quite some time I was hoping that emancipated femininity would counter my weakness, but sadly I have remained single.
Immense in scope, yet clear in his humanity.
The great professor !!!! We proud of you !!!!!!!
Wonderful lecture! Thanks for sharing.

We look forward to welcoming you soon.

Joseph Stiglitz - STIAS Lecture on The Revolution of Information Economics th-cam.com/video/s1HnxyTvSRk/w-d-xo.html Start: 13:40 Critical mistakes: Assumption about perfect information => Market is generally not efficient Sectors in which information is more important would be more inefficient - Financial sector => E.g. 2008 financial crisis - Healthcare sector - Education sector ==> Everything is about the information asymmetry Some of the implications on those markets with imperfect information - Policy implication: Most policies were assuming perfect information - World bank: Structural adjustment program in Africa, but after 20 years it was less industrialized than East Asian countries - Failure: Information issue, having too static view of the world; They assumed that markets would solve all the problems - In contrast, some countries in East Asia believes that the government would be taking an important role especially in early development stage; E.g. World Bank at that time told the South Korean that their comparative advantage would be on growing rice - Market failure (instances when markets do not lead to efficient outcomes / equality / equity) - "Second welfare theorem" - We can achieve any efficient outcome as long as we have reallocation - ==> But the consequences of this is to separate the efficiency and reallocation into two: One shoudl be done by economist and another should be done by politicians - Information perspective: No we cannot separate the two; E.g. IMF said tat countries should be paying more attention on the reallocation, because societies with much inequality do not function very well - Market failure due to competition? - Very often markets is not competitive, one of the reasons would be about information imperfections - "Knowledge" - Knowledge is just about information about the world! - Nature / property of knowledge and information - The public good - Non-rivalry assumption - The issue with "public goods"? ==> Can be widely distributed if it is free, but why would people do that? Do not really benefit from that - There are IPs "protecting" people's knowledge, but really? - We cannot separate market and politics: - Markets have to be structured, but how do we structure the markets? - 2 Theories describing the economy - Marx's - Inequality because of differences in power - The effects of power can be evaluated with mathematics and game theory - Chicago - Talking about why people are getting more resources: Talking about equality in a more neutral perspective - Some are more rich because they are just better - The nature of the modern (technology, knowledge based) economy - People wished that the technology would enable more perfect information and thus more market competition, but that is not true - Huge fixed costs, and very low marginal costs - What if there are only a few firms in the market handling all the information => They have all the market power - Disinformation? ==> We did not really focus on this before
Very happy to see this and looking forward to meet you all in the second semester. Warm regards. /Carlos

Economicalização de tudo é um fenômeno atual A economia quer tomar cada área possível Tudo tem que ser monetizável Tudo tem que possuir um ethos econômico Tudo tem que possuir um valor calculável para o mercado Até sua vida e morte
Do you do any real work or just show your mug on TV and online spewing useless tripe ? How dare people blame the unvaccinated for recent outbreaks. FACT: Fully vaccinated people can still contract COVID-19. FACT: Fully vaccinated people can still spread COVID-19. So would someone please tell me how they can possibly determine who exactly was responsible for the spread? They can’t. But it’s easy to blame those who are trusting their own immune system.
You deserve more congratulations Dr Laltaika
