Why I use the Canon xf605 for Filmmaking?
มุมมอง 1.8K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Why do I sometimes turn to a camcorder like the Canon xf605 for filmmaking? A few of the main reasons is the quick run and gun of an all in one camera verses carrying a bulky cinema camera. The long reach of the built in lens...and that reach allows you to get close to wildlife or situations where keeping a safe distance is important. The built in ND filters, XLR, SDI has made the Canon xf605 a...

    A lot of "cinematographers" are comparing the XF605 with cinema cameras, but in reality, it`s part of the XA camcorder and PTZ camera family. This is probably, why it only has a lens with a small diameter. All of those lenses for the XF, XA and PTZ cameras might be made on the same production line. One top Canon 1" PTZ camera seems to have the same lens and the same electronic parts as the XF605...the CR-N700. Also, if you would "strip" the XF605 down, if you would "put away" all additional accessories (lens, XLR extension, etc,), a FX30/FX3/R5C would need, to have the same functionality like on the XF605, the basic camera part of the XF605 would only be a "camera" about 1.200$. So realisticly, peoples are comparing 3 - 5.000$ APS-C/full frame cameras with a 1.200$ 1" sensor camera. And then, they have to put on a lot of additional accessories, even to be able to "keep up" with the complete XF605. The XF605 seems only to have two weaknesses: a bad low light capability, and a visible rolling shutter. If you use indoors a good lighting setup, and don´t use excessive whip-pan´s, it´s a fantastic "all in one" camera-package for it´s price. For my XF605 i bought an additional NANO-C98 98wh, 14,8v, 6600mah Battery with PowerTap and USB, so i could run an external monitor and the XF605 just with one battery. The only "rig" part is the monitor holder, two cables to the monitor, the external monitor with a sunshade, a shotgun XLR microphone and a wireless XLR microphone system. The XF605 is a perfect camera for weekend warriors...you don`t have to remember a lot of functions, because of the dedicated buttons. You just press the button with the name on it. You don´t have to search trough a touchscreen menu, like on my Canon HF G50, which was my first attempt, to enter the video world. I also could have a C70 for that money, but the additional stuff, i would need, to get the same functionality like on the XF605, would blow up my budget. Now, we have a C400 knocking on the door, and it´s hard to resist. With a C400, i would go nuts with the additional stuff, i could put on... The XF605 is the "restriction" i need, lol!

    I also use my Sony full-frame camera with a pletoria of great lenses, filters, cage, XLR add-on, but often I just fall back to my Canon XF605. The 605 is just such a versatile beast, all in one box, easy to handle and unbeatable fast. It’s just such a joy to work with it. And so I won’t participate in the debate of full-frame or camcorders. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages in different situations. For me it’s both of them, and I wouldn’t want to miss any of the two. But for me, a modern top notch camcorder, like the XF605, is one of the most underrated pieces of gear, mostly under the radar of all the full-frame generation.

      Hey Samuel. Exactly. And as far as the debate, I don't understand it. I am fortunate to film some very high profile productions all over the country/world and yes...the cinema cameras capture amazing footage. Worked on a commercial shoot all day yesterday on the DJI Ronin 4d 8k. The prime lenses and that camera captured incredible scenes. Didn't pull out the 605 once. But the day before, I was suddenly in a situation where a surprise birthday party happened. The 605 knocked it out of the park for that situation.

    • @savillecreations8046
      @savillecreations8046 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Erik. When the matt-box was on I was all manual zoom. LIDAR wouldn't reach over the box. In the video where you see me with the matt-box, I was mostly just testing it as I have an occasional situation where I need to block out light. But 95% of the time, I won't have a matt-box on the lens. And the 4d was able to handle it without the counter balance but I don't think it would have worked during fast movements. With the counter balance, it likely would work in faster situations. But having a dedicated focus puller would be the best way to go in that situation.

    I have been a fan of the entire XF line except for the XF400. I tell camera students today to invest in a camcorder to generate income in covering events such as lectures and more. There are more events you can use with camcorders than with mirrorless. Old friends in the industry call me a 'tweener.' When I returned to video years ago, I came in during the DSLR movement. I was trained on camcorders as a teenager, so I knew the value of a camcorder. I refused for years to go DSLR, and boom, I jumped into it but maintained my camcorder use. I cover pro sports (NFL, MLB, and more). Many times, I would see Fox Sports crews using XF205. I had an XF200 (no SDI). I have used XF300 and XF200 for years for sports, news, and events. The XF405 is what many dreamed the XF200 would grow up to be. My main love for this camera was CLOG! This is coming from my cinema side and color grading. I am working on a TV show and use all three in production: XF605, R5c, and C70s. I use the XF605 for outdoor shots and everything else for indoor shots.

      Bad camera for the price? It depends on what you are filming? I made a ton of money with camcorders and still do. I also do films and own C70s and R5c. I actually have two XF605s. I have definitely maximized ROI with these cameras.

    • @savillecreations8046
      @savillecreations8046 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s why I said it has its place. No need to film in poor lit scenarios as that’s not what I bought it for. I use cinema cameras extensively but there are situations where the 605 is great to have. And there are times in foreign countries that I won’t risk having expensive lenses and cameras where I question customs and the higher risk of being robbed. Was in Honduras and a camera like the 605 is great for the run and gun situations...which for safety there were many of those times. Also had an R5c and a couple small lenses for interviews, low light and the times we could capture more cinematic content. But every time I use the 605, which is maybe a couple times a month, I’m always glad I have it.

      @@fsb6724 I have an R5c also and it is a great camera. Like any camera it has its pros and cons. If I want much more cinematic footage, higher resolution, fast lenses…the R5c is excellent. If I have a situation where I need built in ND filters, SDI, long servo zoom and immediately ready to go, the 605 works for me in those situations.

      @@TheFandangovideoguy I love canon but the 605 was purchased for run-and-gun corporate work. It doesnt meet our expectations so it sits in the closet, we also have 2 Panasonic camcorders that can shoot 4K60 and they produce a MUCH cleaner image compared to the 605. This is indoor with studio lighting and the 605 has very noticeable noise. It’s fine outside is the sunlight that’s about it.

    Was there a blue retainer clip in the way when trying to connect to the reverse lamp fuse?

    • @snowsolo

      Yes, you have to put a little side pressure on that blue clip when trying to slide that plug into the reverse lamp spot....plus my reverse lights don't work now when these raptor lights are plugged into the Rev lamp fuse spot.

    I have a couple of older Canon HD cameras. The XF300 line. Very reliable...getting old. I thought about upgrading to this XF605 but I was "seduced" by mirrorless cameras...I have been using Sony FX30 cameras with nice lenses for a bit. Good quality but sometimes a camcorder is the way to go...for live events etc. Some of the reviews for the XF605 were not favourable. Some users reported "too much noise" on the video-and poor low light video quality, but compared to what? full frame? well...a 1" sensor can't compete with cropped or full frame, but for some live events a camcorder with lots of external buttons and connections (HDMI and HD-SDI for sure) is the way to go..but I find the camcorder very expensive.I could buy 2 FX30 for that price in Canada. Your footage looks great! Do you notice a HUGE drop in quality when comparing the video quality from the XF605 against the FX6 (I have use the FX6 and is great camera but not a camcorder).what profile did you use? did you colour grade it a lot? That pond looks like a dream! Thanks

      @savillecreations8046 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your comment. No doubt the xf605 has its limitations...when compared to full-frame and prime lenses. But the same is true when those cameras are compared to the 605. For me it has its place and that place is run and gun, events, long lens etc...just like you said. I don't see that I will use it day to day but for documentaries, when I need a long lens with a servo, nature etc, I think it is going to be great. But the vast majority of my productions fall more in line with filmmaking. I primarily use the Ronin 4d 8k, Sony and a Canon R5c...which also gives me 45 megapixel stills when I need pics. There will be times when the 605 will contribute some footage. Yes I did color enhance most of the clips. On my high resolution screens I can easily tell the difference between the 4k and 1080 footage from the 605. It was recorded in MP4 (HEVC 10 bit)REC709.I have to keep in mind that many clients won't see the difference on productions between the 4k and 1080 when this camera will be used. It's just a tool to make my life easier on certain shoots and also make my productions better when it is needed. Lastly...yes that pond is beautiful, but definitely made to look more beautiful in the video. Thanks again.

      @@savillecreations8046 yeah. This camcorder could be a great addition to my tool box but i can't afford it. I havent been doing many live events lately where I need to connect to big screens and XLR etc. Real camcorder work. For smaller projects I got a coupe of FX30 with decent lenses. I guess it's "unfair" to compare it to even the FX30 and the FX6 and the other awesome cameras you own. But there are times when a true ENG camcorder is the way to go. Or maybe we are old school? LOL...Maybe I'll get a second hand one if the price is right. Thanks so much

I reinstall the original 10a fuse and back up camera works fine along with brake lights but of course no led's. The fuse box is real tight and it wont plug into the Clearance RH/LH position. I am having the same issue. I think there's a video out there in youtube which shows that you will have to use both mini fuse connectors in order to make the back up camera work. The interesting thing is that if you click on the camera button, it works! I am confused myself, but I am sure there's a way

      @@naterosas1466 I found some info on another site. Yes there should be two 10a fuses in the tap. One for the lights you are installing and one for the original one you are plugging into. I added the other 10a fuse and everything works fine. I did have to sand down one side of the fuse tap to get it to fit in the "reverse lamp" location otherwise it works fine. good luck

    We got a used 2020 SX with prestige package on it a few weeks ago. My wife is more attuned to noises than I am and at first I didn't know what she was talking about but after being in the car for some length of time I hear the high pitched sound you are speaking of on ours too - sounds like it's coming from the rear paseenger door area. What's strange is that the car is actually quieter (engine noise / road noise) than my other car....but that makes the wind noise more ..... louder? It kind of reminds me of when I heard a Tesla owner complain of wind noise (due to there being less overall noise in the car the wind noise seemed much louder). After reading in the forums it looks like someone tried to use surgical tubing run behind the open space of the door seal and had luck with that. Another used Frost King cut in half lengthwise and put in the v slot of the rubber seal on the door frame to help prevent the seal from collapsing when the door is shut. I haven't gotten around to it, but I imagine that there's some solution to be had. I cannot fathom paying 60k for a car and having this crop up. We paid $34k for ours used and while my wife loves the car, she (like you) finds the highway times frustrating and annoying because the car is otherwise simply amazing. I can imagine that KIA has no other real solution other than placing a new door seal on it, but if the door seal is subpar than there's really no fix other than bulking up the door seal through some artificial means.
