The first thing to know is that there are different Montessori teacher training programs. Here at MIB, both the school and our guides are certified by the Association Montessori International; this is the most stringent of the organizations overseeing Montessori authenticity, having been founded by Doctor Maria Montessori herself. We are fortunate to have such amazing guides in our school.
The role of the Montessori guide covers many aspects, let's talk about some of them.
Model
The Montessori Guide models grace and courtesy, demonstrating characteristics such as respect to others, offering assistance when necessary, using a quiet voice, keeping the environment clean and properly organized among other behaviours.
Prepares the environment.
Guides are part of the environment and have a role in preparing a rich accessible environment for all students. They make sure everything is organized, easy to reach, properly displayed, clean and attractive to the child. Children love beautiful and interesting things, and the guide is always creating opportunities in the environment for children to discover new things.
Observes
The guide takes the time to observe each child in order to determine how best to meet their developmental needs, where they need more assistance, What are their strengths and of course, to help the child discover their own powers.
Teaches or Presents
Observations also inform the choices the guide makes in choosing lessons to present. The guides give one on one lessons or small group lessons according to the child's age, interests, knowledge, what they have been practicing, and their developmental stage.
Encourages
The Guide knows what children are capable of doing, and building a relationship of trust, the guide encourages the children to challenge their minds, their abilities, and most important to develop self confidence.
Waits
One of the amazing things of the 3 year cycle in Montessori is that there is no rush, The guide waits for the right time to present a new lesson, allowing more time to practice when needed.
Inspires
Our guides inspire children in learning, discovering knowledge, learning about the world and building relations, she does this by modeling.
