I started playing guitar again in 2024 - Here's 1 year of progress
🎸 How I'm learning guitar: bit.ly/4gY10zv
This was the year I was finally going to get back into playing guitar. There were so many times in the past where I would start only to stop days or weeks later. I tried other books and courses, but I couldn't stick to the habit.
That changed this year and I documented the progress.

Overcoming "Sucking" at Music | Breakdown and Critic of my 2nd song
มุมมอง 1393 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a breakdown of the 2nd song I made while live-streaming the process. I used the song grandson - Riptide as a reference and inspiration to try and make something similar sounding not a 1 for 1 copy, but used a few elements as a way to learn. This is part of a challenge I gave myself which is to make 97 tracks to improve my music production skills. Chapters: 0:00 Intro 0:36 Drums & Per 1:...
Why We Shouldn't Frequency Sweep (do this instead)
มุมมอง 854 หลายเดือนก่อน
One of the first techniques you learn when EQing is to sweep the frequency, but this can be a crutch and can stop you from really developing your ears. In this video, I will show you how to use a frequency sweep in a better way. So inspiring! What you have achieved until now is awesome. I'm looking forward to watching your next video🎉
Thank you!
Here king, this is yours by all rights 👑 Keep at it, the improvements that you notice in your own playing when you look back on today after a long duration of time will be so so worth it
.
Muscle memory ☠️
Chris i just got back into music 3 days ago by buying myself an instrument and it's been about 11-12 years since i quit. I can only hope my first year back is as full of progress as yours and i wish you the best on your journey of reconnecting with music!
Thank you! I'm sure you will have a great year! Documenting the progress really helped to keep me motivated. I'd recommend it!
keep it up brother!
Thanks!
THE CHARECTER DEVELOPMENT IS ABSOLUTE FIRE BROTHER KEEP GOING UR AMAZIN🗣🔥🔥
All the best brother. May you continue to practice every day and keep getting better.
That's the goal!
Sounds amazing, good luck on your journey
Thank you!
To be honest, I think I quit playing because I got addicted to World of Warcraft.
Smh
Sounds relatable
My man
the solo at the beginning looks like Bento Hinoto's solo
I’ll have to look that guy up, but I learned it from the movie Crossroads with Stevie Vai.
I'm looking to subscribe to Pickup Music in 2025, learning guitar first and then trying the Bass pathway. How would you say the Bass Pathway is? Good job on Grade 1.
I just did the 1st grade of the bass pathway because I start to take on too many pathways at the same time. But what I learned in just the 1st grade helped a ton in understanding the role of bass and playing some bass lines to go with my riffs. I want to come back to it soon
Did you learn creating a full song while taking this course?
It didn’t cover making a complete song but it covers all of the elements to make a section/loops. After this, I went to trying to remake song with the ear training I learned from the course.
Hey man u just popped on my home page commenting to support gg
Aweseome Thanks man!
Great work!
Thank you! Cheers!
you and your foreign metric speak😑... speak American!..we think feet and inches....heeeehaa!
What a dumbass, ignorant comment. You can't even type proper english yourself. And 'American' is not a language.
Great job!
Will 2 normal door sandwiched or 2 communicating door work?
2 communicating doors might be effective, but you need to make sure the frames are sealed with weatherstrip or something
we need more people actually making music on TH-cam and not just talking about music theory or the music industry
Totally agree!
Okay upon 3rdish repetition i get what youre saying thats interesting i like it lets give it a try. Lord knows how much we mix with our eyes 😂
Is this basically kinda sorta like messure twice cut once? To overly simplify it.
Yeah, I would say that works! You are listening 1 time with the EQ sweep and then a 2nd time without the EQ. Then you make your “cut”.
A bit lag on the figering notes is that the actual mistake? Other than that it sounds perfect
Yeah I was late in a few phrases
@@ChrisFinnell it was seamless! the great thing about playing musical instrument is making the mistake seems less like a mistake, youre a great one! ^^
The mistake is ur not viral
Thanks for watching! If you found it useful, consider leaving a like~ Also, I’ll answer all questions in the comments
Interesting and helpful!
So how much did one panel come out to be
I have those details in the description, but it came out to be around $25.
Well made video, panels and loved the analysis. I hope your channel grows quickly 👍
Keep it up 👍🏻
Can this be done from outside the door to reduce incoming noise? Would the vinyl still allow people to knock from outside, or do I need to add a bell?
Yeah, I would imagine that is would have the same effect on the outside as long as you cover the gaps. And you would still be able to hear people knocking.
where did you get mass loded vynil?
I was able to buy it online here in Korea. So I'm sure something like Amazon will have it if you are in the states.
yo it's pretty decent! don't be so hard on yourself! The fact you are creating is all that matters. Don't feel pressured to impress anyone and just have fun doing it!
Thanks man!
Great first attempt bud. I was nowhere near this when I first started. How far are you on your journey now?
Thanks! But I should clarify. It’s my first song in this challenge to make a number of songs live-streaming. I have a backlog of loops and half finished tracks. I have a background in mixing so I know my way around a DAW just never pushed to actually make music until now.
hey man, really great job! this is fantastic for a first song (you should hear the crap I cooked up when I was starting lol), and your approach and willingness to learn is spot on - rooting for ya!
interesting! :D
This is the 1st song of 97 if you roast it well enough, I might get better. Full play though at 7:32.
Awesome🎉
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for this vid.. I've built out a drum/mix room in basement and the walls and ceilings are all taken care of with res channel, multiple layers of 5/8 drywall but the door is going to be the challenging and weak spot. Going to go solid core, vynil, maybe some green glue and MDF ( with weather stripping). Down side is I have two doors as i wanted to keep another area open for storage. Will have to beef that one up as well but this tutorial was a big help. Only change I'd make is to do a surface mounted handle as well vs drilling a hole through the door. You could probably have cut even more sound that way.
I'm glad it helped! Yeah I wish I could have done more with the door handle.
What are you using for reference speakers?
Really, any small speaker or stereo will do. It's even better if it is mono, or can be switched to mono. Then listen on a big system. Your mix routine should be roughly like this: 1. Mix in mono on flat near-field monitors to get a good starting mix. 2. Switch to stereo on the near-fields, and do your panning. Try hard not to change levels much, if at all. 3. Switch back to mono, to be sure you didn't break the mono mix while making your stereo adjustments. Listen particularly for phase canceling in things like stereo delays or chorus. 4. Switch to whatever small speakers you use: boombox, clock radio, mono Bluetooth speaker, whatever. Little speakers have no low end, so you're listening if the kick and bass are okay, if the mids aren't too strong without massive low-end there, etc. Gently do EQ and level to fix problems. 5. Finally, put the mix up on your big stereo. Fix anything that bugs you. 6. One last check with the near-fields and small speaker. Big stereos almost always sound good, even when the mix is poor, so that's why you leave them for last. You don't need specific little speakers or massive reference monitors. You're just wanting to be sure you've balanced for the common scenarios of little mono speaker and big stereo. If those sound good, headphones will, too, because they're about the most forgiving at all. For me, my little speakers are a Sharp Boombox from 1983. It has a line input, and has a mono/stereo switch. As long as you're covering these scenarios, and are familiar with how good mixes sound on them, then you'll do great!
Thanks for sharing! I’m sure a lot of people will find this useful.
Colt Capperune showed all the points in an EQ curve he uses to mimic his cubes. I’ve been using that, as well, and works great for checking translation on my mixes.
Yeah that would be another way to get a different perspective! Did he cut the lows and highs and do a little boost in the mids?
Yes. The Pro-Q curve looked eerily similar to the graphical curves you showed. Great vid, and nice score on the boombox, as well! Thanks
Fun fact: crappy mixing monitors were invented by Les Paul (who also invented multitrack recording.) He'd pull his car up to the studio window, run a wire out and check his final mixes sitting in his car listening on the mono speaker of his car radio. (which would not have been a "hi fi" system when he was doing this in the 50s.)
Haha thanks for sharing! The original car test
0:22 I've used a boombox as a reference monitor. But I've never seen, or even considered the possibility of, a rack-mounted boombox. That's some Beastie Boys-level tech.
Yeah I wasn't expecting to see it there. I was looking through dozens of photos to find the damn boombox he keeps talking about.
interesting! great job!
Thanks!

Yeah, it’s definitely going to take some persistence. Thanks!
I’ll be starting to livestream the process and creating a video on each song..thoughts?
Should I start making some of the livestream public again?
