      He does things in a different way...More a kind of 'what' you can do rather than 'how'. I know he does do all the cross-compile stuff and I suspect (I don't know and don't claim to) that he just figures the instructions are out there so why duplicate it. My view was more from the perspective that the process is complex and intimidating so I figured I'd just try to make it easier for people.

      I do have some Arduino nanos around here and yeah, an Arduino would work fine. There's SDKs available to interact with both the distance meter and the LED. I just preferred doing this with a PI partially because of the brand of the channel and partially just because I prefer the generic nature of the pi zero Vs the more proprietary coding models of microcontrollers. But, for sure, it's absolutely doable.

    What bothers me about the PiOS, is the inability to partition a disk. Whether an SSD card, or an M.2 drive. I have prepartitioned drives, before and after installation of the OS. It has been my practice for years on other linux versions (I've been using linux since 93 or so) and have found it very useful to use differnt storage, system goes here, user data goes here, and then I have a swap partition (there doesn't seem to be support for a swap partition anyways!😢) BTW, is there anyone that knows HOW to turn on the hardware encoding? If the Pi foundation says it is something available, then I would think that would be a matter for the device tree (that I'm still trying to figure out) and drivers to go along with it. Dunno!

    • @jeffs_piinthesky
      @jeffs_piinthesky 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You know what, I'd NEVER actually thought about that but you're absolutely right about partitioning in PI-OS. I guess it's always been targeted as being such a burn-and-play thing that they've never provided an "advanced" option for storage layout...I've not tried the Debian installer for PI...Do you know if that lets you lay out the FS as you'd like? As for the hardware encoding, the big issue is that Broadcom are a closed shop and don't openly publish details about the VideoCore VII. They just share that with vendors who license the product. So, for sure, Eben Upton and the foundation folks would know how to do it, it'd just be really nice if they'd actually allocate some time for it!! 😃 Thanks so much for the message!

      @@jeffs_piinthesky I was just writing a long reply and I hit the wrong key and kicked right out 😂! My bad! Anyway, making it short. It appears to me, the changes need a change in the installer program. It seems to wipe out any existing and then rewrites a new partition table. You can control partitions on other drives (like an ssd on a hat) separate from the boot source. You can mount separate partitions on your file system. A Pi OS can read and write all kinds of file systems, the file system a partition uses is identified in the partion table itself

      @@jeffs_piinthesky To me, this is something for the program developers to tackle, as they are already familiar with the program. I would have to set for days/weeks going through the code to figure out what and how they are going about the process. I would look for an existing partition table, determine if the 1st partition is big enough for the /boot directory to write it out (plus a bit for upgrades, etc). Same process for the rest of the partitions. Plus, you would need to modify the kernel or what ever deals with swap files vs swap partition. So far as I know, there is no way to setup or format a swap partition, in PiOS. I can, with a "standard" x86 Linux distribution. I started using Slackware on a 486, the kernel version was 0.97. I was a kernel tester for a couple of years and got very familiar with that C code. Now, there are new ways of dealing with "devices", than before. I haven't had the time to fully figure it out. I have a PID module for the fan that can control the fan and regulate the CPU to less than .1° C, mainly using the existing fan control files in the (I forget the directory they are in right now!) for now I'll refer to it as in the temperature devices files. They have a file that is called "mode" or something like that in the folder. By default it has a 1 in it, but if you change it to 6, it will go into a PID mode, vs the by default method, which is basically on/off at different levels, that are set also in files, to set the "hysteresis" and setpoint. Included in the directory are PID type setting files. My program for that does the calculations and sets the fan speed (also in the directory). Works very well, separately, still trying how to get it set and running from the device tree.

    The Wi-Fi card one might be explained by a lot of these USB cards having poor Linux support, but seeing it work on the older Pi and not not the newer one is very strange. I completely agree with you about the memory and the GPU capabilities, though. I think they stopped offering the enable codes for GPU capability, but that would be an option if it's due to licensing.

    • @jeffs_piinthesky
      @jeffs_piinthesky 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      So far as I can tell, the Video core VII is exclusive to the PI5 so I doubt it's a licensing issue but it is something I hadn't thought of. Thank you so much. It's certainly a very good suggestion as to why it's not enabled. It is just so baffling!!

  • @jeffs_piinthesky

    Ok everyone, I've spent AN AGE trying to get this working on a PI5 and I've failed miserably! I used Bookworm 64 bit Raspberry PI OS. Downloaded the drivers source, built & installed those and set the country. Bookworm already runs WPA Supplicant 2.10 so should have worked fine. With the country set, could see the 6G frequencies unlocked but no matter what, scanning from inside wpa_cli or NetworkManager would only see 2.4 & 5G WiFi. Since it works fine on PI4, I can only think there's something missing in the PI5 firmware though how that could impact on a USB WiFi dongle, I have no idea. Anyway, I've adjusted the title and description of this video accordingly. If YOU have any joy with 6G WiFi on a PI5, please let me know how!!!! 😢 2024-09-04 UPDATE!! On a PI4, I installed Bookworm 64-bit. I updated the firmware using rpi-update, then downloaded rpi-source and the rtw8852cu driver source just like in the video. I built the source and installed the driver no problem. The wlan1 interface showed up just fine but would not connect, despite having the wpa_supplicant-wlan1.conf file just like in the video. I found that if I set up a connection in NetworkManager (e.g.. called PITS_6G) using WPA3_Personal as the auth type, and associate that specifically with the wlan1 interface, then it doesn't work immediately. However, I ran 'sudo wpa_cli -i wlan1' and ran 'dump'. This showed that the parameter sae_pwe had a value of 0 despite the wpa_supplicant config file having 'sae_pwe=1' in it. I then used 'set sar_pwe 1' within wpa_cli to set that correctly, exited out and ran 'sudo nmcli con up PITS_6G'. Then my connection established and everything worked just fine. I've not found a way (yet) of making the sae_pwe=1 setting persistent since the NetworkManager config files don't appear to have an equivalent and the setting in wpa_supplicant-wlan1.conf is not making any difference. But, at least I can get a working 6G connection in Bookworm. I then tried it on a PI5 using the exact same procedure and, no matter what, the 6G connection was never detected by NetworkManager or wpa_cli. This is despite using the exact same version of Bookworm, the exact same version of Kernel and, of course, the exact same USB WiFi adapter. As such, I can only conclude there's something within the PI5 firmware 'somewhere' that is preventing 6G networking from working, at least with a USB dongle. As per my PCI Express PI5 video earlier in the year, I was able to get a PCIe WiFi6 card based on the AX210 chipset working - albeit not perfectly.

Similar issues in that you need to download and build the drivers but the relationship between wpa_supplicant and NetworkManager is very different. Right now, if I try "sudo nmcli dev wifi list" after installing the drivers & setting the country, I'm not seeing any networks show up that are secured with WPA3. The fundamentals of how to set it up will be the same. However, there's always the risk it won't be backwards compatible with the bme280 API that Adafruit provide. I just had a look and it looks like they do have a specific BME680 library that has a slightly different syntax to support the extra features. You can find setting up the md127 device in the video "Build your own NAS using a PI5 and SATA Controller Card" with that specific part starting at 18m48s into it. You can construct the RAID volume inside OMV as well by setting up the PV, VG's and LV's in there using the LVM2 plugin and then the "Multiple Devices" plugin for creating the RAID5 array. In the other video, it's all done in the command line. th-cam.com/video/yzqFOgN3Sl0/w-d-xo.html

But soon as it's added, I've got a few ideas on things to do with it.

    I came across this looking for ways to ditch Sky TV as it is costing me too much money each month. I too have a dish but I also have an aerial. I will have to watch it another once or twice to really understand what is involved, but for now, I do have a couple of questions. Is there a way of adding NOW tv into this to access Sky Sports and I was also looking to set up a Jellyfin server so can it all be routed and work together?

    • @jeffs_piinthesky
      @jeffs_piinthesky 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The NowTV app is available but I wasn't able to test it as I've never had a subscription for that service. All I do know is MANY of the services have locked down their content with DRM (Widevine) which is not supported on the platform. You can install an open source version on Raspberry PI OS but so far as I know, there's not a good solution for Lineage unfortunately. So Im getting increasingly pessimistic about this projects long term future. As for Jellyfin, you can install the client on there and I've had no problem streaming file based content from a media server onto my TV. However, I did hit a problem with streaming live TV from TVHeadend via Jellyfin running on a pi though if the Jellyfin "server" was installed on my Ryzen box, it worked fine. So that is one I'm still trying to figure out.

    • @jeffs_piinthesky
      @jeffs_piinthesky 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Couldn't agree more. The old Ubuntu system with the /etc/network/interfaces file was so simple...Everything since then feels like complication for the sake of complication. Saying that, the GUI version seems pretty effective though is still laid out pretty badly... A number of viewers have pointed out nmtui, a text menu system replicating the GUI which TBH I'd never heard of, let alone tried. But if it ends up doing the right thing, that'll be something...but doesn't do a lot for automation/scripting solutions

  • @pjotrekse

    On the command line with network managet use nmtui to get a ncurses pseudogui where you can have a guided network setup or delete the config to revert to dhcp.

    • @jeffs_piinthesky

      I used a regular pi power supply for the pi. Technically I could have used the 5v rail from the Pico power supply but where the pi5 can use a variable supply, I was figuring it might be more efficient for it to use the native one. But for sure, I can't think of any reason why powering from the Pico supply wouldn't work.

Many years ago I made an analogue motion detector using similar transducers to do with the moving object creating "interference paterns" . I'd bet someone really switched on with PIs could do something more up to date. I too use a tennis ball and string, a power saving version.

    • @jeffs_piinthesky

      This was very much a continuation of the prior video where I built a RAID5 array using mdadm on the command line. With OMV, I just used the ' Multiple Device's plugin to carry that through. However you can build it in OMV from scratch in the same way. Either use identically sized disks or identically sized LVM volumes as I did...But just configure those to the RAID level you want and then let the whole thing initialise.

    I plan on building this. BUT my main concern is that the system is using sd card for running the OS. I would prefer booting off of and using a NVMe SSD instead. Any thoughts on doing this? I think there's a dual NVME card for the raspberry pi - maybe that's one way of dispensing with the sd card altogether. Or maybe running off of a USB dongle - but again I'm not sure how reliable this is either.

    • @jeffs_piinthesky
      @jeffs_piinthesky 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can get NVMe hats with 2 m.2 slots now which could do what you want HOWEVER you'd be sharing a single PCIe lane between the two then which would impact on performance. If you get a USB3 NVMe enclosure and put an M.2 drive in there, the PI has a separate PCIe lane for ieach USB3 port so you could set that up as your boot device and it'd run much quicker than the SD.
