I don't think the section on Emergence is quite right. At 8:30, the slide defines emergence as "macrobehavior cannot be explained or understood by the elements from which they arise, and is absent in its elements". Based on the Emergence Wikipedia article this is the definition of "Strong Emergence" specifically. However all the examples Dr. Fried gives belong to "Weak Emergence". I personally define "Weak Emergence" as useful macro properties that can simplify the behavior of large systems. For instance we don't need to know the position/velocity of 10^23 particles to know that ice melts at 32F. It's likely that "Strong Emergence" doesn't appear at all in the physical world because it would violate a fundamental assumption of physics that things can be understood by their constituent parts. Given this, I don't understand the "Of bikes and lakes" slide because it's forcing a distinction that doesn't exist (both systems are governed by their microscopic properties). Anyways this is tangential to the main point of the presentation! Thank you for the interesting talk and sharing!
