Forgiveness seemed so contradictory in Christianity to me because when I forgive it feels like releasing that which i am not. Not paying someone else's debt, not making someone else pay for it. I just released it. So it made no sense to me that God would require payment to "forgive" because i thought of it as releasing the idea of there being a debt to be payed. I thought of it like holding a hot coal and forgiveness letting go. I struggled with it for several years. What someone eventually explained to me is when I pick up a grudge it's actually picking a coal out of God's fireplace. It was simply never mine to use, so when I released it it felt like it just disappeared. They helped me realize the debt, though not attached to me making them pay it anymore, is still a coal that needs to go back in the fireplace. And that's the "payment" everyone speaks of for sins. The coal has to go back whether anyone it attached or not. And forgiveness isn't releasing debt itself but rather attachment to debts. And once he put the coals back where they belong he lets go as well making it not a counterfeit forgiveness. Jesus isn't still in hell. He just dropped off all the sins there whether people remained attached to them or not. Just in case you come across anyone else as confused as i was, this might help explain
