The Aesthetics of Rock - Richard Meltzer interview part 2 (Dec 2024)
Richard Meltzer joins Scott Woods and Tim Ellison to discuss his groundbreaking book, THE AESTHETICS OF ROCK, published by Something Else Press in 1970.
In part two of this 140-minute discussion, Meltzer talks about the jazz and art movements that fueled much of his interest while writing Aesthetics of Rock, the blues records that got to him later in life, recent re-evaluations of Elvis, musings on his time spent with Sandy Pearlman, Soft White Underbelly, etc. And tongues--lots of tongue talk here too.

The Aesthetics of Rock - Richard Meltzer interview part 1 (Dec 2024) Richard Meltzer joins Scott Woods and Tim Ellison to discuss his groundbreaking book, THE AESTHETICS OF ROCK. A tracking shot (it won't put Godard, currently dead, out of business) of a bunch of issues of Nerve magazine from Toronto, c. 1984-88. With an epoch-defining (sort of) yet unauthorized backdrop of Hüsker Dü's "Flip Your Wig" (1985) probably the most revered and covered band in Nerve's brief history.

Is he serious or is he playing? Part one, potentially, of a decades-long silent dance between Richard Meltzer and Marshall McLuhan just an open window, if that. Meltzer soundbites are from his 2000 interview with Scott Woods at rockcritics.com. Soundtrack by the Rivingtons ("Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" scandalously, NOT IN THE BOOK) and the Cadets ("Peek-a-Boo" in the book).

A not wholly successful DJ Shoe North mix (hey, he said it, not me) inspired by p. 25 of Richard Meltzer's THE AESTHETICS OF ROCK, where Barry Goldwater, "great supposed foe of all implications of rock" (Meltzer) faces off against the Stones, with a surprise visit from an r&b master from another page, all the while horny college kids "[disrobe] in obscure attic bathrooms..."

Randall Poster is one of the best Music Supervisors working in Hollywood today. His debut soundtrack was for the controversial teen-angst drama Kids in 1995, which featured the Top 40 Alt-radio hit “Natural One” by The Folk Implosion. Since then, he has developed long-running collaborations with such filmmakers as Harmony Korine (Gummo, Spring Breakers), Todd Haynes (I’m Not There, Carol), Rich...

Nice to know that the great man shares my deep appreciation of Arthur Lee. Even though I'm a MAJOR fan of all sorts of Post-Punk (The Fall are my TOP band full stop) and Free Jazz, etc. My absolute favorite single album of all time is, no hesitation, Forever Changes.

Here's that quote on the Stones I was looking for - "Without December's Children as the wholesome nihilistic phase from which 'true' sentiment could grow as the logical radical extension, the Ruby Tuesday sentiment would probably be dealt with...as sellout or camp (p. 46)."

I can definitely see both Don and Bruce both being influenced by Dylan's really wordier epics like "Rolling Stone" or "Memphis Blues Again". And it's not a big step from "American Pie" to "Rosalita"; they both have those party-hearty group vocals and AAAA rhyming on their respective singalongable refrains

A lot depends on how useful you find the methodology for the Acclaimed Music website, which purports to collate critical thinking about popular music. Anyway, "American Pie" ranks #14 on the "top songs of 1971" list, between "Theme from Shaft" and "Wild Horses" by the Stones. Which, again depending on their methodology, suggests McLean had decent critical support for that song ("Vincent" is #58 on the same list; I don't think any other McLean songs are anywhere on the site).
