    What a coincidence that, Turkish Airlines gave out a tin just like your plastic box and I have made that into my travel sewing kit. I placed magnets on the lid to hold my needles, snips, and plastic clips. Thanks for your tip of the dental floss container and ready to sew pre-threaded needles.

    Hi Blair, we used to be Flickr/Blog friends back in the 2000s when our kids young. My son is 24 now. But I went back to work and life took over and I lost track of so many creatives. I recently got laid off (maybe just accelerating my retirement...I am 62 now) and got back into quilting which is how I found your youtube channel. I do follow your IG, so I know you moved to NM (and I moved from Santa Rosa to Seattle) and that you are up to all sorts of wonderful things with sashiko, chicken scratch and your scrappy quilts. I love your convo with Lisa. Color is so integral to my life and I have found after living in Seattle for 3 years I am now officially in love with navy, gray and pink...a palette I never would have picked back in California. But the spring weather, cherry, plum and magnolia blossoms and the Seahawks blue are so sympathetic to that palette. It also helps that the rental house we live in is a cosmetic flip with every room painted light gray. Anyway, just wanted to give a shout out to the old days when indeed I looked for thrifted treasures for other bloggers. It was great fun back then, but I gave away most those treasures when we moved and even trying to shed more. Phases of life are so interesting. I feel on the downhill side (but not in a bad way! just clearing space for new creative projects like spoon carving and basket weaving and pajaki making. And of course quilting. I have Kaffe Fassett shot cottons 15 years old that are crying to be used. You cannot get most of them now and the new ones seem to be inferior in quality. I am grateful I have the time and resources to devote to making things. So happy to see how you have evolved. I LOVE Fern BTW.

    Watch how skilled Japanese stitchers do shashiko , they use different techniques. In particular never pull a needle , always use a special shashiko thimble.

    My problem is my emotional attachment to most of my fabric! I'm 65 and began sewing in high school home economics. I've saved fabric all these years for the day I would have my own sewing room. My mother had a professional sewing room which I would help her if she had a large order. When she retired and moved to a smaller home after my Dad died, she gave me a lot of leftover and remnant fabric, trim, notions, etc. Now I am finally putting together my sewing room and I am overwhelmed with the amount of stuff I have! I look at what Mom gave me and I remember working with her on it...and it gives me warm loving memories of time spent with her! But I am swamped!!! I don't enjoy going into the room even. I must force myself to pare down my "stash" so I can enjoy my retirement the way I want and need to!!! Thank you for taking your time and sharing with us. 🇺🇸

    • @WiseCraftHandmade
      @WiseCraftHandmade ปีที่แล้ว

      Linda, I understand what you feel. It's one of the reasons I came to quilting back in the very beginning, actually. To me, fabrics hold memories. One day maybe you will be inspired to sew a patchwork quilt with little bits of all those fabrics. Then you would have a quilt full of memories of your mom. A project like that may motivate you to pass the rest on to a new generation of quilters who would likely be very excited to receive fabric to sew with, especially if they are on a limited budget. Whatever you decide to do, cherish those memories in whatever way works for you. Getting a sewing room organized is very much an ongoing process. Thank you for watching!

    Just discovered your Chicken Scratch class on Creativebug. I have wanted to learn this craft for such a long time. I ordered several colors of 1/4 inch Robert Kaufman Carolina Gingham online and can't wait to get started as soon as it arrives! I've got a ton of embroidery floss to use up and I can use the extra fabric in my quilting. Chicken scratch on gingham would be adorable in a quilt, especially combined with some other vintage-y fabric.

    It's interesting about hand stitching being calming as the rhythmic practice reminds me of a variation of EMDR. When my grandmother, who helped my grandfather survive trauma from World War II, was stressed, she said she would count 1, 2...1, 2...1, 2... until she felt calm. That seems to be similar to hand stitching, which seems to be similar to EMDR. At any rate, my two cents!

    Have you ever left ties on the back? I worry the ties in front will detract from the design.

    • @WiseCraftHandmade
      @WiseCraftHandmade ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes absolutely! In my first book I made a quilt of men's dress shirt fabrics and had the ties knotted on the back. Sometimes doing that lends itself better to the overall design.
