The Story of British Canals - VHS - 1993 (Canal History Docu)
1993 VHS on the history of canals in Great Britain. It is a bit dated in its style (and incidental music lol) but still an enjoyable little program with some very interesting footage.

One often over looked in the worst gimmick lists. From the 'State Hospital' Norman the Lunatic! One of the popular stars in the NWA according to JR. Yes he did beat Foley and even had a program against Flair for the title !

Rather large blaze on the top deck of the multi story car park at the Derby Assembly Rooms. No reported injuries and it was contained to the car park. Unfortunately it completely destroyed the plant room and will cost millions to repair. The Assembly Rooms are now closed for at least 18 months while repairs or replacement of the whole building are considered.

    Splendid, richly informative and beautifully made documentary. I think the quality of documentaries has, all in all, deteriorated in recent years. Certainly this film has more clearly presented and worthwhile content than 80-90% of the recent ones of all types that I've viewed.

    As a recent school leaver in the early to mid 1970s I remember the Humber Bridge being built as I worked at the Halls Barton Ropery and later at the Falcon Cycle Works in Barton before leaving the area to join the Military never to return to my roots in the North. After being posted to Gibraltar for two years I could not face a possible repeat of the Winter of 1963/4 when we had a really bad Winter with SIX FEET OF SNOW falling that winter. I finally settled in Sunny Essex where Snow is seldom seen. Tony in Essex.

    My wife and I spent our honeymoon, a mere 3 1/2 days, on the Ellesmere canal in 2017, and any video on the canals is a wonderful reminder. There is nothing like this here in Japan. If you happen to get the chance, check out Cheshire Cat canal boat hire, the people we rented ours from, they are wonderful people. We had a tiny boat called Northern Lights. A mere 38 feet long. And what memories we have of that. If we won the lottery, we'd offer the company a stack of cash for that little boat, and live on it 6 months / year.

    It's not really the story of British Canals, more of the english narrowboat. Hardly a mention of the most successful waterway in the UK, the Aire & Calder Navigation.

    Hi Thank you so much . I have been watching 'The Great Canal Journeys' starting from the beginning. This is a remarkable & full sharing of the rich history of the British canals that helps fill in the blanks for me. This documentary, so thoughtfully put together is the sort of effort that makes TH-cam & the internet continue to be so worthwhile.

    💰 ~ What I don’t understand is how could it really save money to transport goods and services over the water versus the already built roads when you have to build the canals out of nothing? Maybe had the canals flowed without the need to be pulled by horses then I could see how they’re saving money on that area, but horses were still needed. I presume it did save money because why else would you do it, it’s just hard for me to understand how that could be. But I wonder if it’s kind of like modern day where you have different lobbying groups who make big claims to get some thing paid for by the government and then don’t actually delivered in the end. It’s still amazing what they accomplished, but I don’t understand how it can make economic sense.

    • @camdenmcandrews
      @camdenmcandrews ปีที่แล้ว

      Like the railroads, nearly all of Britain's industrial canals were built by private companies. As you suggested, the initial idea was to save money on transportation. The canals proved to be enormously less costly than horse-drawn carts. From the standpoint of simple physics, water is a stupefyingly more effective lubricant than the wheel. Compared to roads, inland waterways are also significantly less bumpy. A canal boat, drawn by a single horse with one paid person minding it, can transport 25 tons of cargo; say coal. That same cargo drawn in a cart by a single horse would max out at hundreds of pounds and do much more costly damage to the road than a canal boat does to the canals. Once built, the canal is much easier to maintain than a road; and moving freight from the road hugely reduced wear on the road. That is why, in 1769, when Brindley's first canal was complete, the price of coal in Manchester dropped by 50% and that was the spark that ignited the Industrial Revolution. The next key feature that made canal transportation to industry was the reduced breakage. That's how the potteries got involved. Wedgwood experienced more than 50% breakage when transporting their goods to market by horse-drawn wagons. On the canal boat, the breakage dropped to near zero, so the cost of pottery at the market dropped by half.

      @@camdenmcandrews- Thanks for the information. I have some more documentaries I’ll end up getting around to watching. I don’t know if they done with the economics of it though. But just a massive amount of infrastructure and engineering needed seems like it would’ve been a problem. But I guess it’s just not something my mind can really completely imagine right now. But I did think previously about what you said in your comment, that water I guess great such less friction that you’re able to pull the goods without as many horses. And of course you have feeding and watering and everything else that you have to take care of. I guess it’s just the upfront cost that seems so astronomical.

    This reminds me of what I heard about when my Grandfather was a lad in the 1890s. As children they used to go swimming in the canal (in Surrey) to cool off in the Summer. The girls kept their knickers on and the boys went in "starkers". Am told that their Mother would've had a Blue Fit if she'd found out what they had been doing. Also Thomas Telford: Was he the one who stayed in bed on the day that his canal-on-a-bridge, aka aqueduct, opened because he was afraid that it would be a gigantic failure?
