The text was written with a view to the civil rights movement and the associated unrest in the USA in the spring of 1968, a few weeks after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. It is about an African-American woman who is exposed to everyday discrimination in the USA. The blackbird with broken wings, sunken eyes and the longing for freedom is symbolic of this woman.

You do not need to interpret the lyrics literally, in many songs they are suggestive. The Beatles don’t always want to tell you a linear story, and the stories don’t always have to be taken seriously. They are suggestions to your imagination. Sometimes they are a bit like one-liners, witty catchy phrases that fire your imagination. Bob Dylan wrote that way a lot and it really unblocked the imagination. The “Spanish” in Sun King is actually just a made up language
