Hey, my name's Steve and these are my experiences riding rail trails, country roads and exploring the wilderness of Southern Ontario in Canada.
ROAD & RAIL TRAIL In Kingston Ontario
Kingston, Ontario was a good place to spend my teenage years. I got to know the city intimately riding around with my friends looking for the next fun thing to do. It was big enough to have a lot of great experiences and also small enough to not be a concrete jungle.
I hadn't been back to Kingston on two wheels since I moved away and I was curious about what it's like biking there today. The cycling infrastructure's a lot better now and it was a pretty good experience. Join me as I reminisce a bit, tell some stories, visit old haunts and discover new things along the way.

Brockville's URBAN RAIL TRAIL In The Summer
มุมมอง 17014 วันที่ผ่านมา
A ride along the city of Brockville's urban rail trail on a nice summer day. I did a similar ride in February, but with the trees bare, it being a realtime video and the Brockville Railway Tunnel closed for the season, I wanted to revisit it in the summer. After a month since my last bike ride, this was a good place to get back in the saddle to start enjoying the end of the biking season! This ...

Brockville - Riding To The Set Of NETFLIX'S HOT FROSTY
มุมมอง 22328 วันที่ผ่านมา
Netflix was in town in to film a holiday film called Hot Frosty earlier this year. Court House Ave was closed down for a while where they did a lot of their shooting. On a nice summer's day (while it was raining heavily all around us), I went out for a ride around the city of Brockville to go through downtown and through the area where the movie was filmed.

After the busier sections along the Ottawa River and downtown, it was nice to close out the ride on some quieter paths. I've always liked riding on the Experimental Farm Pathway, so it was nice to get back on it as I headed back west towards Bruce Pit. It was a great day out riding in the nation's capital on the last day of summer.

Sometimes things don't go as planned when you're out for a ride. This was that part of the journey for me. Still, it made things interesting and never took away from the fun I had of getting out to do this trip. Continuing where I left off at Parliament Hill, I head to the Rideau Canal and follow the paths south to the locks at Carleton University.

This video is full of educational content. It's just too bad that none of it comes out of my mouth. I continue my day trip through the city of Ottawa, I start off at Deschênes Rapids Lookout and head up through Gatineau for the first time ever on a bike and close things off crossing the Rideau Canal to get to Parliament Hill. The highlight for me was crossing the Chief William Commanda Bridge f...

Ottawa's always been one of my favourite places to cycle. Back when I was living there, it wasn't quite as bike friendly as it is today, but the infrastructure for cycling was still amazing. It's there that I averaged about 20,000 km a year cycling in the last few years I was able to ride an old school bike before knee problems slowed me down. This trip brings me back to my favourite city to cy...
Another HIDDEN GEM OF A RAIL TRAIL
มุมมอง 4672 หลายเดือนก่อน
This summer has been a series of firsts for me, exploring different rail trails in the area. This one was a rail trail that I couldn't find much information about and the more I thought about it, the more curious I became to go out to ride it for myself. I started just outside of Russell, Ontario (southeast of Ottawa) and travelled the length of the trail to the finishing point in the community...
Our Adventure To FRANK'S CULVERT On The CATARAQUI TRAIL
มุมมอง 2123 หลายเดือนก่อน
Out of all the rail trails I've ridden on, none have left as big of an impression on me as the Cataraqui Trail. I'd hoped to be able to share a part of that experience with Rhonda and this summer we had an opportunity to get out together to take in part of the trail. I knew I wanted to take her to one of two places; either by Sydenham Lake or the remote stretch by Chaffey's Lock. I decided to s...

A Tale Of Two Trails #2 - THE MCNAB/BRAESIDE RAIL TRAIL
มุมมอง 2343 หลายเดือนก่อน
The McNab/Braeside & Millennium Trail is a more direct rail trail then the Algonquin Trail is to connect the towns of Arnprior and Renfrew. Although it's straighter and it doesn't hug the Ottawa River, the M/B&M Trail is a more scenic route with a lot of beautiful sections throughout. I discovered this trail accidentally and thought I knew what to expect after giving it a quick once-over though...
A Tale Of Two Trails #1 - THE ALGONQUIN TRAIL
มุมมอง 4324 หลายเดือนก่อน
When I rode the Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail last year from the town of Smiths Falls, I stopped at the town of Arnprior. I've been told by a few people that the trail was really nice just west of there (along the Ottawa River) where the trail's known as the Algonquin Trail. I'd always planned to go back to the area to check that section out, and this summer I had the chance to return and ex...
FIND THE LINE: Riding The TAY-HAVELOCK Rail Trail

At 145km long, the Tay-Havelock Trail is a part of the Trans-Canada Trail network. It's the same trail that I tried riding west from the town of Sharbot Lake last summer. (That didn't go so well for me with the trail being totally flooded out and impassable by bike.) I've been wanting to ride the Tay-Havelock Trail between Glen Tay & Sharbot Lake, Ontario for almost a year. It's only a small 35...

One of the most accessible rides for cyclists of all skill levels is the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail and Long Sault Parkway between Upper Canada Village and Cornwall, Ontario in Canada. Long Sault Parkway is also relatively flat and the views you have as y...

Very interesting. I must come down from Ottawa to do this trail next spring. By the way, I can see how much your video skills have improved over the past year. Integrating the Relive feature is really interesting. Well done!
Thanks! It really helps to have more time to work on each video. If you make the trip, make sure you time it so the Brockville Railway Tunnel is open for the season. There are some great places to eat downtown and if you're still looking for a little more cycling, the Waterfront Pathway along the 1000 Islands Parkway is just a short drive west of the city.
Great ride, and I learned some things about K-town.
Thanks! It was fun to go back for a day just to go down memory lane.
I miss that water! Thanks for the trip down memory lane, even if had to see myself elbowed in the balls.
That show had a nasty habit of leaving in the "real pain" shots. Like when the script called for me to get punched in the gut, but I got socked in the face! That's why the pain shots always looked so real! Because they were. 🤣
New subscriber here. As an avid 360 user myself, I really appreciate your “Insta skills.” 👍
Thanks! 👍
I’m going to have to insist that you take the Rail Tunnel at full speed next time. That would look amazing.
The lights have been fixed since I did the ride. I'll have a proper walkthrough and light show next spring when it opens. It's really something when it's going
Is that Picture in Picture in Picture at 5:40?? 😮
What can I say? I'm a pioneer.
Great video! Fond memories of when my late wife and I walked the entire trail in 2005, before it was resurfaced. The slower speed limits are in place for the sensitive provincially significant wetlands you crossed - the Hubb's Creek Marsh at Danforth Road and the Slab Creek Wetland at Station Road, to protect the wetland critters that often are on the trail. Good work! Congratulations!
Thanks for the info about the speed limits. That was kind of what I started thinking it was about near the end. It would be nice if there was some better signage there explaining things for visitors to the area. It's a great trail and I hope to get back out in the summer so I can experience it then!
Thank you so much for posting this video! The camera quality is amazing, and it’s so relaxing to watch. I grew up in the 1990s not far from the tracks between Ford Road and McLachlan Road, and seeing those trails brings back so many memories. My friends and I would’ve definitely gotten into big trouble with our dirt bikes, ATVs on this trail back in the day...LOL. And we’d probably take the tracks from McLachlan to Perth Road, heading up to the Franktown store for ice cream and gas top up. Now that I’m in a wheelchair, I’m planning to get dropped off on Ford Road and enjoy the scenery down to McLachlan. The trail looks nice and smooth for my electric wheelchair! By the way, is your bike electric? Looked like you were flying! Okay, story time with Tim is over!🤣
Sounds like lots of good memories and some great stories to tell! That's what life's about! The trail is really smooth and you shouldn't have any problems along there. Yeah, it's an e-bike since I have issues with my knees. Once I'm up to speed, it's pretty much on me and I usually average about 26kph. A bit slower than I used to do, but still a good speed to get from A to B.
Awesome weather! A week ago, Manitoba was the hottest place in Canada! Great video.
Thanks! For sure, you really can't beat the weather we've had this time of year!
@SpokesAndScenery for sure! Wish we could have gone out for a few more rides before winter sets in. Cheers!
Certainly enjoyed your Ottawa series as it is one area we haven’t been to but would like to get there. Ottawa seems to have developed a great biking infrastructure. Do you by chance post your routes?
It's really come a long way and I only touched on some of the biking routes in the area. The pathway around Rideau River is beautiful, but I wasn't sure how far I could push myself that day after a month and a half break. I don't have any of my routes online. I might look into doing that next year and post links up
Wow👌 nice riding !
Geeze that seems like ages ago. What month?😊
That was recorded in June. We were getting all the nice weather down here and you guys had that stretch with all the rain
Looks like the K&P Trail has recently been extended northerly from Clarendon Station to Mississippi Station with new grading and gravel. See video by Herve Del Norte.
That's some good news! Hopefully it solves some of the flooding problems in the area. Part of my 2025 plan is to return and keep going north, so I'm looking forward to seeing the upgrades next year myself. I'll have to check out the video, thanks for the heads up! 👍
I grew up in ottawa then moved to nothern ontario Marathon on the north shore of Superior.Three hours east of Thunder bay. We live on a beautiful lake and our log home is heated with wood. We enjoy the serenity here. I remember they close the parkway every Sunday for cycleists when I lived there in the 60s 70s...do they still do that??? Nice video, kinda makes me sad I moved from Ottawa as it has so much to offer. Maybe when we get to our 80s we will move back...lol
Sounds like a pretty cozy place to move to! As much as I love Ottawa and my time there, there's something to be said about living in a quieter area, away from the big cities.
I watched your first vid and our last. Do you live around Bruce Pit! Just moved to the area and starting to explore paths. There are some some small mtb loops in the Bruce Pit btw, not all gone
I used to live in the area, but moved out of town a while ago. I went up to Ottawa for a day trip for these vids. When I lived up there the whole area was open for mountain biking and it was awesome. I checked out the trails two years ago after the tornado and saw a bunch of new trails being made, but things weren't in great shape yet. I just kept it simple in the paths for this ride in BP.
Wonderful video my friend, it really does surprise me that you don’t have way more subscribers as your content and camera work is first class . Hope you continue next year .
Glad you enjoyed it! I don't worry about the number of subscribers to the channel. Its just a fun pass time for me and a bit of a reference for other people who might think about visiting somewhere I've been. I'm not done hitting up the list of places I want to visit yet and I've got some great rides planned for next year! I still have a few videos that I taped over the summer that I'll put out over the winter and I'm hoping to get a few fall rides in too.
thank you for another great video I have watched several of your eastern Ont. rides over the last little while. They are sparking my desires to try most of them on my new Catrike recumbent that they complete the build on wed or thur. I will use this fall to learn the trike then next summer some longer rides maybe Ottawa. what is your camera a 360 x3 or 4?
Thanks, Doug! Some of the rougher trails might be a bit rough on a recumbent, but there are definitely sections of each place I've been that you could ride without trouble! Enjoy the bike when it's ready and the new adventures it'll bring! I used a X3 for the videos up until the "Racing Against The Rain To The Abandoned Hwy" video. That was the joke and the beginning: I switched from the X3 the the X4. Now, I use the X3 when I'm in a spot where I don't want to risk damaging the X4, like when I was out with Rhonda and went inside of the tunnel on the Cataraqui Trail.
Wow.. your cycling vdeos look so much better than mine 😂 I've done quite a few videos on the bike paths in Ottawa but none of them are smooth, I guess that's what happens when you film with a cell phone. Also, I've done a number of drone videos showing the devastation at the trees from the tornado it ripped a straight line right across the city, it's pretty incredible 27:18 somewhere around here next to the parkway & Tunneys pasture I found the most incredibly radioactive rock, It's not super dangerous but it was so weird to find.
I remember watching your videos of the aftermath of the tornado after it happened. It was a good perspective to really get an idea of how destructive it was. It really makes a difference for biking videos what you use. It took me a little while to work out my setup, but I'm pretty happy with where it's at these days! Cheers!
Great video from your perspective. We just biked a lot of this city and Gatineau this past summer. Cheers
Thanks! Always a lot fo fun to hit the trails in O-Town and take it in, for sure
@@SpokesAndScenery indeed Ottawa has so much to offer for bike paths/trails. Cheers
Hello! Ottawa cyclist here and fellow TH-camr! Just added the sub and checking out some of your content. Thanks for sharing your experiences! Hope to see you on the trails soon! Support local right? Hehe 😅
Thanks for dropping by! Always great to see more local riders making fun content online!
Love you're videos my friend , you have gave me great places to explore on you're channel . Keep up the good work
Thanks Steve!
Nice 👍 riding ! Are you from Cornwall ?
Thanks! The city of Brockville is home for me these days.
Just found this channel. Ive got a hybrid non e-bike and this looks doable. Youre absolutely flying from our vantage point.
Very doable on a hybrid bike! For the most part, I'm doing about 25kph. On the smoother parts, maybe up to 30kph and the rougher parts down to 20kph. If my knees were still good and I was on a hybrid bike (non-ebike) with good gearing, I'd be going a lot faster than this, but you work with what you've got! On my old mountain bike, which was about 32lbs, I'd average about 35kph on long trips.
Is that a bear country or the trail is surrounded by farmland?
South of Verona, it's pretty much farmland and bear sightings are rare. Around Verona, you might start to see bears. North of Sharbot Lake, yeah, it's bear country. Between Verona and Sharbot Lake there was fresh bear droppings on the trail when I passed through. Didn't see any bears in person, though in my trips.
@@SpokesAndScenery Thank you! This is very useful and important information for me.
I think you’re trespassing in my backyard!
I've expropriated your backyard and incorporated it into my territory.
I live in Cornwall and ride along the pathway frequently . Those little roads etc that you are passing actually go down right along the river . Way way more scenic some trails go right through the woods . Also along the old canal system complete with d machinery that used to open and close locks to allow passage of ships that were pulled along by donkeys , nukes and horses . The path you road basically mirrors the highway , as you said you could see all of that in your car . Take the time to venture south more closer to the actual water line and you will see at least 300% more interesting things than what we saw along your journey . I actually had several videos I had made reading the signs that are posted along the riverside path that are basically History bites of where you are standing whilst reading , said signs . For some reason one day I went to add a new vid and TH-cam said my channel was shut down no description of why but I lost roughly 5years of content that was educationally motivated to help get today's youth off the couch and down to our beautyfull water front . Anyways , love your content .
Sounds like I've got a good reason to head back sometime to do some exploring! I might make it a spring ride when I'm looking for a few different places to check out to dust off the winter cobwebs. It's always nice to have a mix of different places to go while I gear up for the summer.
Thanks! Never heard of it, but will definitely do it now. It's not too far from where we live. 👍
Yeah, this one really seems to have flown under the radar. It's got one of the best riding surfaces I've been on and I really enjoyed it. The bonus is on either end, there are lots of options for places to grab a bit to eat and drink.
@@SpokesAndScenery Now I'm mystified. My RideWithGPS heat map only shows the New York Central Foot Path going from Russell to Embrun. Is this not also what is commonly called the 'Russell - Embrun Trail'? On the western end it starts near the intersection of Hamilton Rd and Rte 200. It extends 9.1km to its end near the Palais des Sports in Embrun on Saint Jean Baptiste Street. It is a very nice walk or ride, but aren't these one and the same thing? You seem to suggest that there are two separate trails.
Never heard it called the Russell-Embrun trail before. I just know of it by it's official name. I mentioned at the start of the ride that it wasn't the Prescott-Russell Trail, which is the one I've been talking about riding this year.
Excellent video, rail trails are such a great way to see Ontario. I haven't made it that far east yet, but hoping to check it out some day.
There are a lot of options if you ever make it out this way!
The flooded town of Farran is right out in front of the culvert where you took a break.
I ride a recumbent trike so dont share your oppinion about it is good for the grass to grow in the middle of the trail.
Different opinions are what make the world go round and make life interesting! As long as you enjoy being out and doing your thing, that's all that matters! Cheers! My next video features a rail trail that doesnt have that problem.
Just did this part last weekend, amazing!
It was definitely my favourite part of the trip!
That was a fun video to watch!
Glad you liked it!
To be frank, cool culvert.
Cooler than I thought! Wish I'd have brought shoes I didn't mind getting wet to try to make it all the way through!
Awesome video, i enjoyed watching :)
Thanks!
She’s hooked! New ebike coming up.
I'm not sure she'll ever get one. She prefers exploring one foot ahead of the other, but she wanted to get out on the trail with me to see it for herself. I'm glad we had that experience together earlier this summer!
now if they could upgrade trails in North Western Ontario from like Orillia to Sudbury
Thanks for the great video. Looks like an interesting trail. I was wondering if you made it on one battery charge and if so, what PAS level you use? Any tips on extending the range? What e-bike do you ride?
I barely made it, but I made it on one charge. It was probably best case scenario. No headwind, me putting in a good effort to reduce the usage and warm weather. The bit I went all electric after I felt too weak to keep going put a bit of a drain on it, but to this day, that's my best on a single charge. I used PAS 1-4 on the ride with most of it in the 3-4 range. I didn't use 5 for the trip. The bike I have is a Gotrax EBE2.
Kudos to you, Steve, for doing the full length of this trail, but I was very disappointed when I tried going from Smiths Falls to Chaffeys Locks last week. This trail might be best done with balloon tires. The crushed stone and pea gravel, where they can be found, make for a quite uncomfortable ride. Furthermore, there are too many areas when one has to ride on grass that has spread over the trail. Every other trail I have done within 120km of Ottawa has been properly maintained over the years with stone dust as a surface. I gave up when all I could see was grass on the trail in front of me, so I switched over to the parallel county road to finish the last 17 km to Chaffeys Locks. One highlight along the way was the memorial to Jordan Michael Yuill beside the trail. I hope you and others stop for a moment to have a look at it.
There's definitely a section where the grass and weeds can get pretty tall between Smiths Falls and Chaffey's Lock. Two years ago it was probably a good 3 to 3.5 feet tall but when I did this ride it wasn't too bad. My feet did get wet from the dew and I changed shoes there. It's part of the appeal of riding this trail for me. I love that the surface is varied along its length.
Thanks for the rides!
Thanks for the two videos. We had planned these routes as one, out on the OVR from Arnprior and back on the Macnab, but we got rained out from the remnants of the last Hurricane. Ended up driving out to Chaffeys Lock for lunch. After watching your rides we looking forward to getting back out there in September!
Thanks for all the rides it’s been great following along … and you helped use discover Eastern Ontario., like you said there is very little content for the area. Will miss the weekly videos and look forward to to any future adventures your able post
Thanks! I've got some interesting rides planned down the road and I hope that the wait between videos will be worth it when I can finally get to them!
Its been a real ride, thanks Steve.
Thanks, Whit! I wasn't sure I could ever get to the 6 month mark of weekly videos, let alone 2 years. I knew the days were numbered late summer last year when I started fussing more about the quality of things on my K&P Trail ride. Once I went down that rabbit hole, there was no going back. 😊
Thanks for all that videos and comments that I have found very motivating. Trying some of the trails you mentioned was much easier because I knew pretty much what to expect in advance. My next challenge will be the Cataraqui Trail and then pars of the K&P. I look forward to your continuing efforts. Best wishes and good luck!
Thanks, Graham! It's been a lot of fun and I'm glad it's helped people out who had the same questions I did about the trails!
Thanks for all the videos. You helped me jump into the 360 world and just love it. You have also helped in creating a bucket list for me too as I want to try more rail trails in eastern Ontario. Did lots around Toronto area, and now to expand my adventures. You are a true inspiration. Thanks very much❤
Thanks, Steve! You know, I never did put anything from the Toronto area on my to-do list. If I did a day trip out next year, what would you suggest as your top trail out there?
Family has been in Cornwall for a long time. The “diversion” was actually the old Cornwall canal. It was built to bypass the rapids in the 1800s. We used to swim at the old locks (near the dam) when we were kids.
It's nice to see it left in place, instead of the land all bulldozed and built over. It really adds some character to that neck of the woods!
Love your content. Thanks for sharing these as it gives me ideas for overnight trips to that area to take my mountain bike. I always chuckle when I see that bottle of Pepsi on your front fork. Must really take a shaking and probably flat as the Prairies when you go to drink it. LOL.
Thanks, that's exactly the thing I hoped the videos would do when I started making them. 👍 I like to think of that bottle of Pepsi as a safety measure. If it gets bumped out and explodes all over me like it did on the Cataraqui Trail, then I know I'm going too hard and need to take it easier. 😄 Surprisingly when they don't shake loose, they're not too flat!
Thinking about riding/bikepacking from Stittsville to Pembroke. I will NOT be riding an electric bike and carrying 40lbs of gear, food and water. What trail(s) do you recommend?
If you want smooth crushed gravel and a mostly trouble-free ride, take the Trans-Canada Trail from Ottawa to Carleton Place then jump on the OVRT and ride that all the way into Pembroke. Between Carleton Place and Almonte, there are sections on the OVRT where you'll see brown dirt/gravel. Be careful on those patches. They're dicey to bike through. Go around them and you'll be good. There are a few road crossings in that stretch where the gravel can be pretty deep and loose, so watch out for those as well. Otherwise, it's a very comfortable no matter what kind of tire you're running on. Have fun, stay safe and have a great ride!
After watching this, I agree completely with you. It reminds me of the better parts of the Osgoode-Leitrim Trail, less the bare hard clay parts. Since I did the Algonquin trail from Arnprior to Renfrew two weekends ago, I am really tempted to go back and do this one also, just for the fun of it. But first, Pembroke to Petawawa so I can say that I've done the Algonquin Trail from end to end.
Hope you have a great ride on the AT! Looks like the weather's going to start cooling off a bit so we should finally be in the really good cycling weather soon. I'm starting to think about what I want to do next, but haven't locked anything down yet.
I just saw a post the next section to Chalk River is expected to open up late 2024!
@@owenoiffer That would be interesting. There is already a discontinuous bit of the Algonquin Trail south of Chalk River that starts at the Highway at the east end of Corry Lake at Clouthier Rd. and runs north through Chalk River to a dead-end road that ultimately runs into Deep River. How one would connect that to the end of the Algonquin Trail in Petawawa looks problematic. Is travel through the Base encouraged? I have already tried to use one mapping service that behaved very strangely in and around the base itself, possibly because it is military.
