A great movie and a great story. MacLean at his best.

I’ve read the book years ago and seen the movie more times than I care to think (one of my all time favourites) even so you forget just how good Alistair Maclean actually was. Thanks for this ❤❤
Wasn't called Heathrow Airport in WW2, Great West Airport then London Airport, Officially christened Heathrow row in 1966, small inaccuracies but otherwise absorbing talent.

The story about the farmer not being able to afford a second candle burning unless they had a ship at see is fantastic and illustrative, especially now in the time of almost-free night illumination. Matt Ridley has a great chapter in Rational Optimist on the almost religions importance of night light and the cost of it.
How splendidly observant! That particular anecdote about the farmer is indeed a fascinating insight into times past, where illumination was a rare luxury.
