I have a suggestion pick a good starter pokemon like charmander , rowlett or smth like that, dont pick a water type and go to a lake to get a magikarp and trust me gyarados is one of best pokemon you can get for sweeping and its intimidate ability works wells , and the gyarados should either have good special defence or good speed , by checking the nature , hope it helps :)
