i always buy from GOG when a game becomes available on GOG and not Steam or wherever else but if it's available on GOG, i'll get it on GOG because DRM Free

One I knew about this i uninstalled steam and start using GOG

Once I found out about this I not only stop buying games off steam. But I started to get physical games big box games , now not every game in my library but there more then I thought.

i only buy games that i want to play online, that is maybe 1 game in 10 years, why would you buy singeplayer games, have to login to some crappy launcher to play your bought game, pirating is even more user friendly, click the icon and play.

I think instead of selling licences, digital storefronts should be selling the games, with a requirement to announce the shutdown of a storefront X number of months before the servers go down. Bankruptcy takes awhile and any other shutdowns are planned. For games without Internet-based DRM, they can be downloaded and archived. For games with Internet-based DRM, that are managed by the storefront, they'll have to be patched to either remove the DRM or redirect it, if the game's publisher wants to keep it active. If a client is required to install the games, it'll need to be updated so it isn't checking online for validation or they'd have to update all the games so they can be installed without the client (which sounds like a bigger hassle). For example, the PS3 stores DRM locally. I can tell this because PS+ games have an expiration date and even when you extend your PS+ membership, that date doesn't change. After the game expires, launching it, while connected to the Internet, finally updates the expiration date. When they stop allowing the PS3 to connect to servers, those licences won't be able to be restored. Those licenses should be converted into standard purchase licenses, without expiration dates. Unfortunately, even with this, I believe that when your clock battery dies, it'll loose all license information, so they might have to do a final firmware that removes all DRM checks. The entire hard drive can be backed up, so if that back up contains the DRM information, users can just keep that on hand for if they need to replace the battery... or something. I bring up the PS3 because I think it'll be the first example of a major platform cutting off DRM validation and every game has DRM. (I don't know enough about alternative storefronts on PC. I'm not aware if a storefront has already shuttered. I'd like to know what happened, if one did.) What if Epic or EA decided that their storefront just wasn't worth it anymore? I'd assume they'd first try to sell off the store and maybe one of their competitors would be willing to buy it but what if they couldn't find a buyer? It's understandable that you wouldn't be able to buy additional games there or maybe even download your purchased games anymore. If, however, you've downloaded all the installers/have everything installed and backed up, shouldn't there be an expectation for continued access? If the games can't be installed because of a broken launcher or can't be played because the DRM is looking for a server that no longer exists, should these big corporations be able to just ignore the issues? The PC space at least has competition, so there's a good chance that mergers or acquisitions will take place, unless it's a total market collapse. Consoles, on the other hand, operate under a monopoly. There will likely come a point when another console store completely deactivates and I'd like to see the DRM handshake attempts deactivate along with it.

GOG my friend, GOG! Besides, AB2426 is about clarifying the intent of the sellers by making them specify license term. These online stores have been removing the digital content the people have paid for without any notification and it wasn't clear what really the buyer paid for even though it was vaguely implied in their old agreement. This bill is forcing digital stores to put those wordings in their term clearly that it's just the license access not the actual purchase of the content. In CA, we have similar policy for other products that we use in our everyday life, like PROP 65 Cancer warning. Up until now, there is a checkbox to agree to their License Agreement but going forward, I think what really will happen is that they'll start putting that extra verbiage right on the page where we click 'Pay' implying 'you are not buying, just renting or for limited license term'. Kudos to Governor Newsom in his initiatives to make things less ambiguous.
