Starting the Bind Off - Avoid this Counting Mistake
มุมมอง 844 หลายเดือนก่อน
To keep the stitch count correct, you need to start the bind off correctly. When the pattern reads "work 8 sts, then bind off the next 12 sts", after completing the 8 sts, start binding off by working 2 sts before you pass one over. It is important to start the sequence with working 2.

German Twisted Cast On - straight to the point
มุมมอง 2632 ปีที่แล้ว
I get to the stitching right away and then sit back and enjoy a sock cast on at the end. Thanks for watching and happy knitting! The German twisted cast on is my go-to stretchy cast on, especially for socks. It can be done in pattern with knits and purls, making an ultra elastic border. I cast on over two needles so i can get the stitches neat and taut, or else they don't want to stay put and s...

There's a fiber festival in Quilcene the same day as the dance on Oct 12th, and that's the deadline I've put to finish this cardigan once and for all so I can wear it. Would you like to go with my mom and me? It'd be great too if you want to join me for my music set!

      @fiddlespun 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @samgrant83 I tried his zorro method and found it way harder to get the yarn through. I can live with the back stitch being twisted. If I remember, I heard someone say this way was invented by Elizabeth Zimmerman

    Great video - there are so few people who show the important steps. There's a Shetland knitting way to deal with the "extra" stitch to pick uip, which picks up the same two legs that you are doing, but then passes one of the legs over the other (which way depends on the side you are working on and the lean of the decreases you wish to follow on the relevant side of the sock) to create a new "stitch", which you then knit into. They use this for closing up stitches around fingers/thumbs in gloves etc, but it works the same for socks. It amounts pretty much to the same thing in the end. I've learnt the Shetland method but I'd recommend yours as perhaps a little easier for anyone who has been struggling with closing up the potential gap.

    Thank you so much for this video! it is super helpful, and I will apply it starting in my second sock. I just have 2 questions I'm dying to know the answers to: 1) what is your pattern / the stitch pattern of the sock called? 2) What type of yarn are you using? They both look gorgeous and so comfortable!

    • @fiddlespun
      @fiddlespun 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The pattern is a free one, the Hermione socks. The yarn is called Distracted by Yarn and it's from my local yarn store, but I think they sell it online. They're called Cabled Fiber and Yarn. The yarn is actually really nice, its 380 yards and has 8 plies in the yarn. It makes super squishy socks that last a long time, without them being too thick like a dk sock.

    What about the garter edge do you like? Why is this your “go-to”? I have only done shadow wrap until this pair that I am on. I was told to slip the first stitch in each flap row.

    • @fiddlespun
      @fiddlespun 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mostly to keep track of how many rows I have done. It's super easy to count the garter ridges, and know when I've made 16. It's especially handy for the partridge slip stitch pattern where you have to keep track of even or odd rows. I like the look too, it adds a little detail on a vanilla sock. And if your yarn is variegated, it's fun to see it worked into a different texture stitch.

    The lesson I didn't know I needed! I've gotten holes right in the heel turn of my socks so I'm definitely trying this. On the setup row 1, how many stitches altogether? Does the slip stitch count towards working half of the total?

    • @cstall_
      @cstall_ 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And counting the edge stitches after completing right side rows was really helpful

    • @fiddlespun
      @fiddlespun 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      On the set up, the first slip stitch does NOT count toward the "work half of total amount". So for my 30 stitch heel flap, the setup row is slip 1, purl 15, p2tog, p1. So the slip stitch plus my work half actually equals 16, and then I do the decrease.

    • @fiddlespun
      @fiddlespun 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @TheCripeCrew Yes you will start every right side row the same to get an eye of partridge pattern. Here we are alternating starting the row with (knit, slip) and (slip, knit) to get straight lines. It's kind of weird how it's opposite of how we would work these patterns on the heel flap.
