Great India Drive - On Top Of The World - with Hyundai Tucson
The sixth edition of Hyundai Great India Drive 2023 was flagged off from Srinagar for Kargil district in Ladakh region, giving us a taste of what it means to be stationed at high mountain peaks in the company of rocks and snow, under life threatening climatic conditions. In the confines of a comfortable and warm Tucson, the journey was much bearable though.
Being in the company of a mighty SUV like the Hyundai Tuscon, which is as inviting to the driver as it is intimidating for a rough mountainous terrain, one cannot avoid but feel truly being on top of the world. The high altitude passes laden with fresh snow and slippery roads overlooking deep gorges, act as a testament to the fact that very few cars can take on these paths with such poise and dexterity as the Hyundai Tucson can. The all-wheel drive function coupled with advanced snow mode feature ensured the vehicle does not fall short of its grip on the road surface layered with mud, snow and loose gravel encountered frequently while passing through the famed Zoji-La pass, where tanks of the Indian Army surprised the enemy with one of the highest altitude tank battles way back in 1948. We stopped by at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras to pay our homage to the brave soldiers who laid their life in the service of this nation. Having driven it across a high mountain pass, its time to check how suitable is this SUV for driving across other parts of the country.
The second leg of this amazing journey passing through Maharashtra state, exposed us to a completely different kind of mountains - the great Western Ghats which run along almost the entire western coastline of the Indian Subcontinent. Made of hard, black volcanic rock, this range is more than twice as old in geological age as the Himalayas. As we head into the interiors of Maharashtra along highways, the luxurious Tucson was really in its own zone. With that massive engine and the very refined auto-box, it was a breeze to drive despite its size. Latest safety features like Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control together with a host of other safety features collectively known as ADAS level two features, proved the versatility of Tucson and how it can comfortably adapt to any sort of driving condition.
The Hyundai Great India Drivealso gave us an opportunity to explore stories of valour and gave us an insight into what encourages young lads to commit themselves on to a difficult path like this and instil in them a sense of pride when it comes to making the ultimate sacrifice for the nation, if the need arise. Our search took us to a small and unknown village in Maharashtra, which has the word ‘Military’ appended to its name due to the enormous contribution it made to the defence forces ever since Indian independence and before.
Apshinge Military is a small village located at a distance of 40km from Satara, in the state of Maharashtra. This village has the history of participating in every single war fought by independent India. British Government recognised Apshingefor its contributions in the world war fought by Indian soldiers on their behalf and even built a memorial right at the centre of the village long ago to show their gratitude for sacrifices made during the world war.
Every family in the village sends their youth to serve the Indian army, and this has been the tradition since generations. Army veterans Anand Suryavanshi, who suffered a major leg injury caused by a mine blast during Kargil war, had his chest swell with pride while sharing his memories from the war, his son currently serving the Indian Navy. Another ex-army man Vikram Gadge decided to transform his family farm land into a training academy for grooming young aspirant achieve their dream of joining the Indian National Army. Witnessing a professionally conducted early morning drill at the training camp and conversations around village history with the cadets made us realise the importance of military-like discipline, strict fitness regime and constant rigour that the youth of this village grow up with. And these weren’t some one-offs for us, a visit to the village meant that every person we came across on the streets had interesting stories to tell.
A slight detour around Chalkewadi Windmill Project and Kaas Plateau in the vicinity proved Hyundai Tucson as a worthy cross-country travel partner and carrier for us, making the different journeys of exploration ever easier and fruitful. From snowy peaks to rocky mountains, from high passes to high plateaus, to the valleys and plains, it has seen many of the amazing terrains that our country has to offer to travellers. But more importantly, it has provided the sturdiness and gumption one would expect from a drive that is ‘Great’.

By Girish Karkera French quirkiness is now part of automotive folklore. Not everyone can carry it off. But the French seem to have made a habit of it. Some of the biggest fashion brands for example, are French. But the brief for the made-for-India C3 would have been completely different. They couldn't have been told to go over the top as unlike many stylish things to come out of the country, th...

Stories of "Kalarippayattu being the mother of martial arts including kung fu", "Bodhidharma teaching Indian martial arts at shaolin temple", "bodhidharma being a Kalarippayattu practioner", "Bodhidharma being a tamil pallava King" is actually a myth and a big lie which is spread by Kalarippayattu practitioners and Indian pseudohistorians since late 1990's to popularise the art and to claim the superiority of Kalarippayattu over other martial arts. China was already flourished with martial arts centuries before the arrival of Bodhidharma. Shuai jiao /jiao di which is said to be the precursor of kung fu said to have existed in China for over 6000 years ago even before Bodhidharma's birth. Bodhidharma's first chinese disciple Huike was an exceptional martial artist and a warrior (ex military), before he became a monk under bodhidharma and started preaching Buddhism. Bodhidharma was a Zen Buddhism preacher. Not a martial artist. Bodhidharma's contribution to China was meditation and yogic practices. Not martial arts. Yi Jin Jing is an exercise manual which as per legends say Bodhidharma supposedly wrote which paved the way for the creation of Kung Fu. Unfortunately, this book was written somewhere during 17th century, centuries after Bodhidharma's death. This manual never existed during Bodhidharma's life time. There are references to fictional heroes created long after Bodhidharma supposedly died. The exercises in the manual are of internal Taoist nature, not Indian or even Buddhist. A fictional story called ‘The Travels of Lao Ts'an’ published in 1907 stated that Bodhidharma taught martial arts. This is the earliest reference that Bodhidharma knew martial arts. Also this book was written long after Bodhidharma's death. Apart from Pseudohistoric articles written by indian Pseudohistorians and kalarippayattu practitioners on internet, youtube videos and some indian movies like 7 aum arivu (2011 film), baaghi etc. which spread false information about Kung Fu and Bodhidharma, there is no historical evidence to prove that Kalarippayattu is the mother of all martial arts including kung fu.

This isn't called Gatka.... Gatka is Turki word....this Sikh Martial art is known as SANATAN SHASTER VIDYA. which is born from KALARI PAYATTU. which is eventually mother of all Martial arts
Beautifully shot and presented
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Ji. Dhan Guru Nanak. my humble request to the uploader. Khalsa and Gatka doesn't need your OR hyundai's sponser. Either you put promotion of Hyundai Or keep separate video of Gatka. No idea why people from majority community of India do not pressure on Indian Law Makers(Idiot MPs) to recognise Sikhs as an independent race/religion. Gatka is martial art of The KHALSA.
Aee chup hoja khalistani.... Gatka Pehle toh Turki word hai.... And Esko SANATAN SHASTER VIDYA kehte hai Mand budhhi

Besides Thang Ta, a Manipuri warrior on a Horse with Arambai (a weapon) was feared most by the Burmese .... The arrival of british and guns changed everything.... Othewise these military tactics and artforms were what kept the chinese and burmese at bay even though Manipur was a smaller kingdom....
