Practical lessons are as important as theory classes, in fact I would say Practical is more important. If you just need a licence you may get it easily but, what about the defensive or safe driving skills? The department of transport have some meaning to suggest minimum driving classes as they will be effective. I agree your point that some instructors are looking to give more than required lessons that we need to be careful of. And simultaneously you need to trust your teacher as well "A knowledge without teacher is blind knowledge". Our sub-continent behaviour would be like why would I fail I've been driving since this many years and all but all those years you have been driving with no rules at all. And also we may start underestimating the instructor saying why would I even need an instructor, you do need an instructor to guide you and show you your mistakes and you need to go with an empty bucket so you could learn. There's always the other way learning that is go sit for the test with over confidence then fail and learn from the assessor but imagine how much would that cost. I always say to my students that you will never forget the mistakes you made in the driving test as you will get more serious and realise how important it is to adapt safe driving skills. Till date neither do I forget the mistake I made in my first test which I have taken with over confidence then a couple lessons and I passed with distinction at a tougher centre, tougher assessor and during a peak hour with school zone. I've been driving in India since 2011, got my unrestricted car licence in Victoria Australia in 2018 and have more than five years experience as a Driving instructor in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Also I hold a five year old Unrestricted (allowed to drive a eatonfuller/double clutch/non-synchro upto 18 speed gearbox) multi axle truck licence and also hold a 3 year old Big boy(greater 650cc upto however legally big engine) motorcycle licence. Had 8 Automatic and 2 Manual driving school cars and a Ducati Panigale V2 for personal use( later sold it as can't be used for long rides thinking to go for BMW R18). I know new comers or students cannot afford driving lessons so I have offered them an option of sitting at the back seat when I'm giving lesson to someone else that way they could understand the mistakes that I were pointing out as they are not on driving seat and under less pressure. In few extreme scenarios when I was free (most of the time I wasn't) offered a 30 minute free lessons to few students. Always looking forward to making safe drivers, soon moving to Germany to shift my Driving School there. BABA BENDARAM.
