Dismantling PART-2, Learn Troubleshooting newer model Shark Professional Steam Mop S3601
Continuation of PART-1 Dismantling video. Learn the inner working principles and components inside it such as the pump, heater, controllers, wiring, reservoir connections to the pump. Simultaneously learn what is responsible for the failure of the mop to produce steam or drip water with or without some fake steam. Once you watch PART-1 and PART-2 of this Dismantling, you will learn that in some cases you may not have to dismantle. Dismantling is easy, reassembly is difficult. If aint broke, don't have to break it. This video demonstrates how to repair and get plenty of steam when Vinegar or CLR fails to produce steam.     Thanks for this. 2 notes I used a heat gun on the decals which allowed me to re-use them. Also my model S3602C has a triangle pump at the top with 3 screws. Remove screws and clear filter to allow water back into system.

Hope your Steam Mop is back in business, meaning working well. Did you open the whole unit as you mentioned that you used heat gun to remove the decals? Glad to hear from you.

    Great set of videos. I used them to completely dismantle my S3601 to discover that everything worked except that the pump wasn't primed. I could see water (and an air bubble) coming partway up the rubber inlet hose but the water didn't make it to the pump..not sure if the air bubble prevented that or what did..but just running the motor wasn't working to prime the pump. I pulled off the rubber water inlet hose and used a syringe to force water into the pump area. You have to do this while the pump is on so you MUST take precautions not to electrocute yourself! Once you see water moving (can't really see the water move but you will see an air bubble or 2) in the Y connection (the one with the pressure release valve) you have successfully primed the pump. I tried the "blow in the water reservoir" suggestion but that didn't work. It took considerable time to dismantle and prime. That's a design flaw, but the user's mistake (that would be me) was to run the unit dry then store it for awhile.

      Thanks to hear from you and your suggestions. Thanks for your time in explaining your process very well. Yes, it takes considerable amount of time to dismantle and efforts to prime. Well, even to assemble it takes lot of time and concentration not to make mistake. How did it go? Did you run the unit in scrub mode for a while after priming? Approx how long did you run after priming? Did you use Distilled water or bottled spring water or tap water? Did you leave some water in the reservoir after your experiments were over, that is before storing for next use? Congratulations for discovering a method to prime the Shark Steam Mop. Please update, if you have time, on your next startup after storing for few days or any period of time. I am curious to see how it goes, meaning whether it steams up as usual without needing priming. I applaud your courage to go through the entire process of dismantling, using a syringe while the unit was on, and finally assembling (or you have not assembled yet and still experimenting? just kidding!). 😊 Thank you for watching such a lengthy video of mine. As I had mentioned in my notes/comments some of my activities in the video are out of the screen and are visible in my other videos. It is not intentional to make you watch more of my videos. It was the difficulty in focusing the camera as I had to use both of my hands to dismantle. Sorry for that. You know the joy of fixing yourself your steam mop instead of throwing it away. Yes, the portion of the inlet tube without water is filled with air (that air bubble) and caused the discontinuity of supply water to the pump inlet. That air gap in the inlet tube needed to be replaced by water so that the pump would prime. Please be careful while dealing with electricity. Of course I had to do the experiments while the pump was on. In my case it was worse than that; not just the priming issue, the inlet of the heater was clogged which I discovered the hard way. My Steam Mop was approx 7 years old. All those 7 years I filled ordinary tap water in the reservoir due to my ignorance. The bolts on the heater unit were completely rusted and could not be opened. the bolt heads sheared off when I tried to unscrew. I had to drill through the inlet of the heater unit - not easy; extreme care/precise drilling was needed. Then came the priming issue. Finally it got fixed and I have been using it for 2 to 3 years off and on. That is storing for several months and using it when needed. It is priming by itself and no blowing into the reservoir is needed. It produces plenty of steam. One thing I would point out that after completing my experiments, I used only DISTILLED water to fill the reservoir. In my SHORTER version of Reassembly video, one viewer commented and shared his findings and his solution. We had detailed conversation in that thread, which you might have already read. Keep up your good work and be optimistic.

      @sweetmemories4448 The Shark works fine now, even after storing, though I'll clean (using the Shark) more frequently now than in the past. I've always used distilled water...as you mention, using tap water for extended periods can nearly destroy the machine. And yes, working on the exposed innards when the electricity is ON is dangerous if you are not familiar with working in that environment.

    I am unclear on how to prime the water line shown in your video. There is no water in the line, it is empty, suggesting the pump needs to be primed. This probably is the cause of no steam production. You suggested blowing into the water reservoir tank through the fill cap. I tried this after putting water in the tank. I got resistance while blowing, but no fluid went into the line. I tried loosening the screw in the bottom of the back pressure valve or outlet, but this did not make a difference... still no water went into the line to fill it up. The mop was not powered when I tried these things. Should I try blowing through the filler cap with the mop powered "on" and in one of the steam modes like "scrub"? To do this means no access to the back pressure screw, as the mop will have to be reassembled in order to power it up. Could you please provide clear directions on how to achieve priming the pump? Thanks!

To provide an appropriate reply, it will help me if you could describe what symptom you had that prompted you to dismantle your Shark Professional Steam Mop. From your comment it appears that you have already dismantled your mop. Did you watch my video on Dismantling (the links for dismantling are shown in the pinned comment (see above)? Those Dismantling videos (PART-1 and PART-2) talk about priming and other tips in the pinned comments (by me). I will wait for your reply on the symptoms. In the mean time, please read the pinned comments by me in my dismantling videos as well as Longer Version PART-1 Reassembly and also Longer Version PART-2 Reassembly videos. I am not requesting you to watch those videos to increase number of views. Since video recording and editing were difficult for me as I had to use both of my hands to demonstrate the DIY, some of the shortcomings of this video are clearer in the Longer version of Reassembly and vice versa. Also clearer tips on how to avoid dismantling/disassembly (because reassembly is relatively difficult) are described in the Dismantling videos as well as in their pinned comments. Do you have the same model? Approx how old is your Steam Mop? Before dismantling, were you able to hear the running of the pump? Was the unit getting warmer when you set to scrub or mop? When the pump was running, at scrub setting was water dripping from the unit without any steam generation when there was water in the reservoir? Like most users, including me did you use regular water and not Distilled water? Before making these videos I did not know that I had to use Distilled water and hence ended up with a mop dripping water without steam coming out of the nozzle but from the body of the mop (may be after using for one or two years). By the way, if you see water dripping but no steam coming out of the nozzle instead steam leaking from the body of the mop is most likely from clogging of the heater inlet that builds back pressure and the blow off valve opens up (that is its job of the blow off valve to protect the system) releasing pressure (by letting out the water) in the delivery line/outlet of the pump. That water when falls on the exterior of the hot heater, steam is generated which escapes through the body of the mop, and not through the nozzle (because the heater is starving, no water is entering into the heater due to clogged inlet from build up from using ordinary tap water. I will wait for your reply on the symptoms and after dismantling what else (adjustments) you have done so far. Please use DISTILLED WATER ONLY (not purified or spring water).

      @@sweetmemories4448 Thank you so very much for your kind reply to my question. Allow me to respond as follows: 1. Your videos on disassembly and reassembly were of great help to me. My Model is exactly the same as the model used in your videos (Model S3601C0). I am unsure of the age. I purchased it new several years ago. I am unable to say how old it is. It has been used infrequently since purchase. I have always used Distilled Water in the mop. I have also drained the remaining distilled water from the tank after each use and before storage in my kitchen closet. I have used a mixture of white vinegar and distilled water as my "cleaning liquid" for my floors. I have not used ordinary tap water in my mop. My mop worked fine until recently. 2. The symptom that brought me to your videos was the failure to produce steam. I filled the empty tank as usual. I powered the mop up as usual. I put the mop in the "Mop" setting. A small amount of steam was produced. I started to mop the floor as usual. I noticed that no steam was coming from the mop pad. I put the mop in the "Scrub" mode. No steam was produced. I did not observe any water dripping from the unit. The mop pad was damp from the earlier steam production. The mop did get warmer in the scrub mode. It was very warm to touch the unit shell. This tells me that the heater was working, and on reflection, I concluded that no water was reaching the heater. I am unable to say whether the pump was working or running, as my focus was on the nozzle and no steam coming out of the nozzle. I thought the internal workings of the mop were probably clogged, or that something fixable was causing the lack of steam problem. This led me to your video on Disassembly. I had no trouble disassembling my mop by following the steps in your video. My mop remains disassembled as of this moment. I watched Parts 1 and 2 of the Disassembly videos, and have watched Parts 1 and 2 of the Reassembly videos. I anticipate no problems in reassembly as things now stand. The only thing I have done at this stage is observe NO WATER in the line that runs upward along side the pump, and following your comment that blowing into reservoir via the filler cap would cause water to move into this line (i.e., the failure of water in the line could be the cause or reason that water is not reaching the heater, and making steam there). 3. If the heater inlet is clogged at the inlet to the heater (even when distilled water has be used in the past), what should I do to address this and how? Your videos identified the water line and the inlet to the heater. I am unsure of the other lines that run from the bottom of the heater. 4. I can send you pictures of my unit if you will provide me with your email address or text message phone number. 5. I can't thank you enough for your assisatnces, and your invaluable videos. I will not proceed further until hearing further from you. Many thanks!

      @@joee2702 I really appreciate your complete explanation to each item I had requested. I am thinking 1) Since you have been a) using distilled water, b) draining the left over water from the tank before storage, c) no water dripping from the unit when you ran in mop mode and scrub mode, you may be in luck - heater inlet is not clogged. 2) Since the mop shell was warm enough, you are correct, the heater works. 3) The mop pad was moist and warm. This indicates that the pump also works, i.e., the pump pushed the content of its delivery tube (the one having the blow off valve coming out of the pump and connecting the heater at the heater's bottom. The other small tube at that location is actually the line coming out of the top of the heater carrying steam, running behind the heater unit, thus not visible, finally connecting to the nozzle. That is why you see a small portion of the heater outflow tube at that location) which passed through the heater, got pretty steamed up and exited to the mop pad. After the contents of the delivery tube was pushed/emptied into the heater, there was no more water supply to the pump (meaning the pump inlet tube was filled partially of fully with air, losing prime). Therefore, there was no water in the pump delivery tube to supply to the heater. 4) All the above clearly indicate whatever you have diagnosed - the inlet water line of the pump is partially or fully having air, not water, i.e., the pump needs priming. If you have not adjusted the screw of the blow off valve and the mop was steaming before, you do not need to adjust it now. It is possible to lose prime since we empty the water reservoir. I would recommend to continue your best practices after finishing mopping. By the way the comment section of my videos describes what to do before storage. This is FYI to other viewers. SOLUTION AT THIS POINT - Reassemble the unit. Before that observe if there is any water at all in the water line on the left side of the pump unit that comes from the reservoir, going up and connecting to the pump. This will help in troubleshooting later if it fails again. Then follow the steps for priming described in any of my videos (see the links in the description section of the videos). After reassembly, fill the reservoir with distilled water, put the cap on the mouth of the reservoir. Then run in scrub mode for a minute or so. Initially you may hear the pump running making "ghichhi, ghichhi, ghichhi..." sound or slightly different sound. That sound will change after 60 seconds of running to a hissing sound indicating that the pump delivery tube pushed water of the reservoir into the heating chamber of the heater which is already hot at that point. Pretty soon you should see steam coming out of the nozzle. The priming steps in my video clearly indicates what to do even if it fails to produce steam (running the mop in scrub mode holding the mop a bit horizontally as if you are mopping under a bed, etc.). By holding a bit horizontally while running will allow at least some water from pump inlet tube partially filling the inlet nozzle of the pump. Once that happens, it will suddenly suck the water from the inlet tube and thus will be primed. Hope it works and let us know how it goes. Wish you all the best.

      @@joee2702 when you run the mop in scrub setting for a minute or two the pump will expell the air from its inlet tube. That will create negative pressure in that tube which will suck the water from the reservoir may be half way in the tube when there is water in the reservoir. After that if you blow air into the reservoir, yes there will be resistance because you are trying to push the water into the pump inlet tube by force, which is essential. Blow may be two or three times. Then put thr cap on the mouth of the reservoir. Run the mop in scrub mode. It may take 3 minutes or so for priming. Don't lose hope, because when it will start working, you know how happy you will feel. Wish you all the Best.

    TROUBLESHOOTING TECHNIQUES (Watch PART-2 demonstrates these techniques in great detail)- Some updates: Very first thing to do is use Distilled water not regular water or mineral water or purified drinking water. It needs to be DISTILLED WATER available in grocery stores, Walmart, Walgreens, Target etc. It costs only $1.19 or less for 1 gallon bottle. In that one gallon, it can run 10 times or more depending on how much area you scrub in each run. This will save you from future clogging problem, which is a much bigger headache. NOTHING HAPPENS EVEN WHEN THE PUMP IS RUNNING - Now come to the real issue that you have - Nothing Happens when you turn on the mop. I assume that “Nothing happens” means 1) there is water in the reservoir, 2) you are able to hear the pump running as usual, 3) the mop feels warm when you turn on the pump (even if nothing happens), which is important, 4) also you do not see any water dripping or smearing on the floor. Are you so far with me (except for the Distilled water paragraph)? If all those 4 symptoms you have observed, I am seeing light at the end of the tunnel. I am thinking that you may be lucky. Here is the solution - the pump may not be priming. How to prime - Method-1 a) Run the pump for a minute or so with water in the reservoir. b)Then disconnect the power chord from the wall outlet. c) Take out the cap of the reservoir/water tank of the mop. d) Then blow air with your mouth like inflating a balloon or blowing a trumpet or a conch. Blowing air by a straw will not work. The purpose of pressurizing the water inside the reservoir is to prime the pump following the above method, that is to force the water of the reservoir to enter into the inlet tube of the pump thereby pushing any entrapped air within the pump inlet tube. Now connect the power chord to the wall outlet and turn on to run the mop as usual. Method-2: If it still does not produce steam, lower the mop while running to make it nearly horizontal as you would mop under a bed. This method alone or in combination with method-1 may prime the pump. I have used these two methods. Once it worked,and it did not require blowing air. The second time when I used the mop a week after resting, I just mopped holding it almost horizontal for a minute or so. Then it started producing hissing sound along with good flow of steam. Actually you may try this second method first even before attempting to blow air into the reservoir (to pressurize the water inside the reservoir, and not for supplying oxygen.) WATER DRIPS AND NO STEAM COMING OUT OF THE NOZZLE - After fixing the priming issue, if you do not get steam but you see water dripping accompanied by some fake steam coming out of the body of the mop and not from the bottom nozzle (you can observe it if you remove the mop head and use mop or scrub setting. Must remember to keep your hands away from the nozzle from which steam discharges into the mop head otherwise it will cook your hand due to latent heat of the steam), it is most likely the symptom of a clogged heater. When the heater is clogged, the pumped water from the reservoir is not able to pass through the heater, thus creates back pressure in the discharge tube of the pump (which is the inlet tube to the heater unit). In that line, there is a blow off valve as a safety mechanism, which opens up to release the back pressure by letting out the water from that tube (since it could not pass through the clogged heater). Thus you see water dripping from the mop when the pump is running and no steam is generated. In some cases, if the inlet tube to heater (which is the outlet tube of the pump supplying water to the heater unit) is loose at the blow off connection point or connection point to the heater or connection point to the pump outlet, water can drip. For several months after I repaired mine, every week- end I scrub my tile floor downstairs and upstairs. It works so well that mopping the floors does not feel like a chore. I enjoy using it. Only steam comes out and wets the floor just sufficient to remove the dirt. Then the floor dries up in a few minutes. When priming is needed, I know it is difficult to blow air into the inlet of the tank. I use my fingers around the tip of the reservoir inlet to close any gap while blowing with my mouth. I had to blow like that on 2 or 3 occasions. After that every time I used, it self primes and in less than 60 seconds the hissing sound begins, that is the heater gets filled with water and gets steamed up. My experience suggests to finish the water in the reservoir after finishing the mopping for the day before storing. Don't leave any water in the reservoir if you are not using the mop for days. WHAT TO DO IF THERE IS STILL SOME WATER LEFT IN RESERVOIR AND OR LOOKS MUDDY - Yes, I run the unit to finish the water. Before storing there should not be any water in the reservoir. If the water looks muddy, please fill some water into the reservoir and close the cap, shake the unit to rinse the reservoir and pour the muddy water into the sink. Then give a final rinse with DISTILLED WATER and empty the reservoir water. Please do not use any soap or detergent, just DISTILLED WATER. If still some water is left, run the unit until the hissing sound subsides indicating that the reservoir ran out of water, and time to turn off the unit. However, do not run for a long time after the hissing sound subsided or the reservoir is already empty, because the inlet to the pump may fill with air pockets, which may require priming when you use next time. NOTE: After finishing for the day, make sure to finish the water by emptying or running a bit longer to consume the water out of the reservoir. And fill DISTILLED WATER again when you want to use it the next time. However, if you feel like adding some water into the reservoir while still using it, you do not have to complete empty it to refill some more DISTILLED WATER. I am writing it in all CAPs because any other water clogs the intake nozzle of the heater unit.

    TROUBLESHOOTING TECHNIQUES (watch PART-2 also which demonstrates these techniques in great detail)- Some updates: Very first thing to do is use Distilled water not regular water or mineral water or purified drinking water. It needs to be DISTILLED WATER available in grocery stores, Walmart, Walgreens, Target etc. It costs only $1.19 or less for 1 gallon bottle. In that one gallon, it can run 10 times or more depending on how much area you scrub in each run. This will save you from future clogging problem, which is a much bigger headache. NOTHING HAPPENS EVEN WHEN THE PUMP IS RUNNING - Now come to the real issue that you have - Nothing Happens when you turn on the mop. I assume that “Nothing happens” means 1) there is water in the reservoir, 2) you are able to hear the pump running as usual, 3) the mop feels warm when you turn on the pump (even if nothing happens), which is important, 4) also you do not see any water dripping or smearing on the floor. Are you so far with me (except for the Distilled water paragraph)? If all those 4 symptoms you have observed, I am seeing light at the end of the tunnel. I am thinking that you may be lucky. Here is the solution - the pump may not be priming. How to prime - Method-1 a) Run the pump for a minute or so with water in the reservoir. b)Then disconnect the power chord from the wall outlet. c) Take out the cap of the reservoir/water tank of the mop. d) Then blow air with your mouth like inflating a balloon or blowing a trumpet or a conch. Blowing air by a straw will not work. The purpose of pressurizing the water inside the reservoir is to prime the pump following the above method, that is to force the water of the reservoir to enter into the inlet tube of the pump thereby pushing any entrapped air within the pump inlet tube. Now connect the power chord to the wall outlet and turn on to run the mop as usual. Method-2: If it still does not produce steam, lower the mop while running to make it nearly horizontal as you would mop under a bed. This method alone or in combination with method-1 may prime the pump. I have used these two methods. Once it worked,and it did not require blowing air. The second time when I used the mop a week after resting, I just mopped holding it almost horizontal for a minute or so. Then it started producing hissing sound along with good flow of steam. Actually you may try this second method first even before attempting to blow air into the reservoir (to pressurize the water inside the reservoir, and not for supplying oxygen.) WATER DRIPS AND NO STEAM COMING OUT OF THE NOZZLE - After fixing the priming issue, if you do not get steam but you see water dripping accompanied by some fake steam coming out of the body of the mop and not from the bottom nozzle (you can observe it if you remove the mop head and use mop or scrub setting. Must remember to keep your hands away from the nozzle from which steam discharges into the mop head otherwise it will cook your hand due to latent heat of the steam), it is most likely the symptom of a clogged heater. When the heater is clogged, the pumped water from the reservoir is not able to pass through the heater, thus creates back pressure in the discharge tube of the pump (which is the inlet tube to the heater unit). In that line, there is a blow off valve as a safety mechanism, which opens up to release the back pressure by letting out the water from that tube (since it could not pass through the clogged heater). Thus you see water dripping from the mop when the pump is running and no steam is generated. In some cases, if the inlet tube to heater (which is the outlet tube of the pump supplying water to the heater unit) is loose at the blow off connection point or connection point to the heater or connection point to the pump outlet, water can drip.     @14.52 Please do not rub too hard and for a long time as shown in the video. The battery's negative terminal was already rubbed off by the sand paper and was already shiny. In that situation it is bad to further polish it because the length of the battery may decrease slightly and eventually may not create a good contact. I was desperate and was hoping to revive it. When the battery voltage is too low for several months (these batteries were in my 3rd phone landline as standby power for about 10 years, and I had never recharged them. It is too late) - cannot revive by this Sand Paper method.
